● “In developed countries, communities recycle because there is an understanding that it contributes to sustaining the planet’s resources. However, for some of the poorest people in the developing world, recycling often isn’t a choice, but a necessity of life.”

● 300 000 people make a living by recycling waste● They recycle up to 85% of all waste material produced● UK recycles less than 20% of all waste material produced● Dharavi is known as the ‘ecological heart of Mumbai’

Challenges

● 1 toilet for every 1440 people● Water becomes contaminated during monsoon season● 50% higher death rate than upper- and middle-class areas during

this time

● Plan to transform slum into high-rise housing facilities● Each of Dharavi’s 57 000 residents would get 21 square metres of

living space● Not all Dharavi residents are happy with this plan● Many are happy with their current lifestyle
