Dhanbad: A school in the coal belt offers dropoutsand academically disinclined children a chance toreach their full potential. The English School ofLearning, established by Mohd Maksud Aalam in1984 in Nirsa, caters exclusively to these childrenand helps them become responsible citizens.
Meritorious students are denied admission, saidAalam. The school started with just one studentbut has grown in number with over 800 studentsnow. "We charge a nominal fee of Rs 160 or Rs200 depending on the class the student isadmitted into. We do not charge a readmission,
annual or development fee," said tuitions are strictlyprohibited for students. School teachers are deputed free of cost. Schoolrecords reveal that no student has failed in 30 years with over 70% ofstudents scoring a first class. Students are picked up and dropped
by teachers or other staff.
Aalam decided to build this school because he too fought the odds tocomplete his studies. "I would work in a hotel when I was in school butstill continued my studies. I realized that there many children who maybe deprived from completing their studies owing to their financialstatus or lack of guidance. I have devoted my life for the cause ofmasses. I want to provide affordable and quality education to students.I want students to have a strong moral foundation," said Maksud.
Parents are grateful that their children are given a second chance. "I do not know of a school thatprovides affordable and quality education" said Ashwani Kumar Verma, whose ward passed outof the school and is now preparing for an engineering entrance exam.
Discipline is maintained and students are not allowed to anything fashionable. "All boysmust have the same haircut. The barber who comes to snip the boys' hair calls it the Maksud cut,"said the principalfounder.
Akhilesh Kumar Bharti, an electrical engineer working with Madhya Pradesh electricity board isan alumnus of the school. He topped his class in engineering and was feted with a gold medal. While talking to TOI, Bharti said he joined the school in class VII. Before joining, he would studyin a government school in Bihar and was a below average student. Failing to clear exams, Bharti'sparents decided to enroll him into the school. "I would not have continued with studies had it notbeen for the guidance of Maksud Sir" said Bharti.
School alumni are actively involved with the school and do not pass off the opportunity tomotivate students during their visit.
