District 410D July 2017

From the pen of DG Tillie My short story on the “ Wow of Chicago!” Meeting so many Lions from different cultures and countries was one of the highlights of the Convention. We shared many hours talking and laughing during DGE School, we all have the same challenges in all the different countries. Met spe-cial friends in our “horse garden” and will always treasure our new friendship.

Also learned that to talk about problems, you might just come up with the solution to the problem, don’t keep it to yourself! Teamwork is the an-swer. We are not alone, we are part of the biggest service organization in the world.

Met our International Presi-dent, Dr Naresh Aggarwal, and his theme for the year is – “We Serve.” He is passionate about Li-ons and the Power of WE, together we can make a dif-ference in our communities.

To stand among 33 000

Lions – now that is something else, we don’t even speak the same language, but we do have one thing in common, and that is to serve our communities with passion.

Message to you all from DG Tillie ….

Let’s not only get new members, but look af-ter the members we have, they are just as im-portant. Have fun this year and do what we do best, We Serve with passion.

Our visit to LCI, headquarters – wow!

Stood in the International Presidents of-fice, we sat in the boardroom and took a short tour to the offices, where 300 staff members are employed.

……… Chicago itself was just amazing! Beautiful parks every-where, friendly service everywhere you go. We tried the real Chicago hotdog too! Never ask for ketchup… Well the dollar versus the rand is a story for another day.

Remember: Change is a choice –

Don’t waste time and ener-gy to change people.

Sending off and Welcoming Home of DG Tillie

Friends and family saw DG Elect Tillie and 2nd Vice Elect Pieter off at the airport on their way to the International Conven-tion and welcomed them home again after an exhausting trip (on which they can per-sonally elaborate).

After a few nights rest, members of district braved the icy cold weather to join in a welcome home braai held at the George Lions Club on Sunday 9th July.

Knysna Lions Club

At a prestigious event held at the Simola Hotel on Saturday 22nd July, Craig Wood was inducted as the new Knysna Lions President. Outgoing President Brigid Turner handed over the reins to Craig, who said he was very excited about this new chapter for the Knysna Club. He accepted the challenge from District Governor Zwaai Kruger, and endeavours to bring more young blood into the Club, as well as extending fellowship with the other service Clubs.

This also being the 45th year Knysna Lions existence, Knysna Lions were proud to award two local Optometrists, John Winfield and Mike Renou with the prestigious Mel-vin Jones award. (photo left ) This being in recognition for the hours of time donated to the Lions Eye clinic. This clinic provides eye tests and glasses to the less privileged in the community. Knysna Lions were also happy to induct two new members on the evening too, Argeo Africa and Kevin Marais. “We are proud that our Club is growing demographically, and that younger people are joining. Our club desperately need-ed to adjust to the modern age.” Said Craig. Amongst the guests of honour was Knysna Executive Mayor, Eleanor Bouwer-Spies, who said it was important for her office to be aware of the activities of the different service organizations. Present were also Peter Bester from the Round Table, and Doug Emanuel from Rotary. We wish Craig well and promise to support him during his tenure

Lions entertain Seniors

Often the only entertainment and joy to Seniors living in Re-

tirement communities is a visit from their local Lions Club.

We do not realize the difference we make to many of these

folks

lives

by

giving

a hour

or two of our time once a month to entertain

them.

Gonubie

On Tuesday 27 June 2017 a super garden bench was officially handed over to residents of Gonubie Frail Care. It is situated in the front garden in an ideal spot for the winter sun which is a very popular area for the frail residents who love the outdoors. They were also each handed a pair of hand knitted bed socks which were much appreciated. The bench presentation is part of the Centennial Community Legacy Project - Ser-vice Challenge Level 1.

Prompted by a desire to rid Gonubie of crime, a group of residents formed Gonu-bie Protect Neighbourhood Watch work-ing hand-in-hand with local police and security firms to be the eyes and ears of sleeping residents. Volunteers patrol the neighbourhood streets between 11.30pm and 4am daily, looking out for suspicious activity. Their response vehicles have radio communication giving them imme-diate access for necessary assistance as well as ambulance services. In view of this Gonubie Lions recently held a spe-cial craft market raising much needed funds to subsidise their biggest expense which is petrol. Subsequently R2,000.00 was deposited into their account at our local Total garage.

100 year celebrations. We made food for 125 elderly people at Sunset Park... and Daman lodge. Fish and chips were made.

Uitenhage PDG Max Frank (age 84) was awarded Life Membership of Lions by the Uitenhage Lions Club and International in appreciation of excep-tional service to Lions International. This means that he enjoys the privilege of full membership (voting rights ,etc) but does not have to attend meetings or has to pay Membership fees for as long as he lives. It has been years since such an award has been made in District 410 and all his actions support of what Lionism is all about “to Serve those in need “

Lion President Hein at his first meeting of the new year had the pleasure of awarding both Lions Jimmy Beasley (age 86) ) and Malcolm van Vuuren (age 85) Privileged Member-ship Certificates. (photos left & right) It means that they will be expected to attend meeting, and assist with projects, but the Club will pay their Membership fees.

These Certificates are awarded with deepest ap-

preciation for a life of Service.

Keith Niewoudt (Left) receiving a Club banner to present to his new Club, has been a Lions mem-ber since 1978 and recently bade goodbye to Uitenhage and relocated to the USA where he has transferred to the Portland Bentham Club. He was a Leo before pro-gressing to a Lion in the George Club before moving to Uitenhage where he has been a Lion for 34 years. “Lions is about what you can give of yourself so that others can benefit,” said Lion Keith before his departure for the USA. “This is the end goal and along the way you have a wonderful time making friends with likeminded people who have the same passion for helping those less fortunate than ourselves. This ulti-mately makes you feel good within yourself.”

Project 67 Minutes for Mandela

On 16 July 2017 members of the Uitenhage Lions Club and their partners. Assisted in preparing 2 000 liters of soup and 10 000 sandwiches to be distributed amongst the needy in the Nelson Mandela Metropole.

Beacon Bay and King Williams Town Lions join hands to give

67 minutes STOP Hunger Now.

The legendary Nelson Mandela said that “there can

be no greater gift than that of giving one’s time and

energy to help others without expecting anything in

return” and that is the gift that the KWT and Beacon

Bay Lions, together with other service organisations

and corporates gave at Hemingways Mall in East

London on Saturday 15th July 2017 in celebration of

Mandela Day 2017.

Stop Hunger Now (now known as Rise Against Hun-

ger) organised a day of packaging nutritious meals

for the underprivileged and teams of 20 volunteers

each, in four shifts during the day,

each put together in 67 minutes

540 packets (meals) of soup mix-

ture, soya, rice and vitamins,

which will be distributed to vari-

ous preschools and other places

where meals are provided to chil-

dren. It was hoped to package

100 000 meals at the East London event.

The Beacon Bay/KWT Lions team members each had a specific task to perform in order for the process

to move smoothly and quickly, all under carefully monitored hygienic conditions. Some measured ingre-

dients, others sealed and labelled the packets and Lions Presidents Paul Wilkie of Beacon Bay and Brian

von der Decken of KWT took upon themselves the important tasks of quality control and packing and

sealing the boxes. There was live entertainment and encouragement to the teams, a large digital clock

counting down the minutes and much celebration as each team achieved its target.

Decken said. “We thank Heming-

ways Mall for inviting the Lions to

be part of this project and to the Bea-

con Bay Lions Club for asking us to

join them in making a difference in

the lives of children, the future of our

world.”

No sooner had the Knysna disaster struck when the country opened their hearts and their purses and donations started pouring into the region. As Lions always do, the Eden Lions offered a drop off point at their club in the Transport museum. Where the small boardroom was requested to store and sort items, it became bla-tantly clear by the end of the day that it was inadequate. In fact over the next few days, goods arrived in all forms, truck after truck load. With literary 100’s of tons of goods – food, clothing, bedding and household items – notice was sent that Knysna had more than they needed and that goods being delivered were caus-ing disasters of a different kind. Plunder, riots and general looting made it clear that some management was needed over the distribution of items. So LADS was born. Our Lions Assistance and Distribution Services, was created to carefully manage the donated items and ensure not only that items sent to Knysna area

reach the correct places, but that those individu-als being overlooked by other distribution points be assisted as far as possible. With funds raised for the purpose of as-sisting the affected community, this project was supported by District 410D cabinet. Also with the overwhelming sup-port by the local community, a massive warehouse was se-cured; some shelving and tables where donated, security and necessary pest control services were offered; and the

warehouse has been operating under 24hour ac-cess control. Working with a number of reputable organisations and individuals, literally 100’s of affected families have been helped by LADS in some or other way. Necessary bedding has been offered as well as ongoing food hampers to see individuals and families over this hard time. As houses are being set up, household items are been collected too. Tons and tons of clothing are also in

the pro-cess of being sorted and will also be used to assist where there is a need. Hopefully the district can see LADS becoming a permanent Disaster Service that can serve the entire Eden District through any future disasters as well as eventually general poverty relief. With its own constitution and board of directors, Cabinet Secretary Barbara Haywood was appointed as the

Operations Manager to see to the day to day running of the set up. With daily deliveries being signed off and still regular deliveries being received, LADS has drawn the at-tention of local authorities where negotiations for future partnerships are in progress.

Eden Lions Golf Day A Successful Golf Day was held at the Kingswood Golf Estate on Saturday 8th July. A great day was had by all and players enjoyed the many donated prizes that were handed out. The main raffle prize of the day was a rugby ball signed by the Stormers Rugby Team and a voucher to the Tree Top Adventures. LP Carl was MC at the event. DG Tillie did her very first Project visit within 24 hours of landing home……….

Eden Presidential Induction Eden Lions Celebrated the Induction of LP Carl van Blerk on the 17th June 2017 at the Outeniqua Moth Club. LP Carl was also presented with an International Presi-dents Appreciation Award by DG Zwaai. Who would have guessed the theme for the evening would have anything to do with Cats…….

IPP Jenny thanked all the members of the club for their support and handed out a few certificates and awards to members. The Prestigious Lion Of the Year award was giv-en to a well deserved Lion Andrea Rothner for her continued dedication during the year.

LP Carl was supported by a proud family – Lion Debby and Junior Lions Jade and Tyler.

Standing together in service. As individuals, we can only do so much. But when 1.4 million Lions work together, there is no limit to what we can achieve. If each of us invested just $10 each month in service or served just one more hour per week, we could truly change the world.

Transforming hope into action. Lions are active in communities all over the world. Let’s take advantage of our global presence by engaging each Lion in service early and often. We must address the urgent needs of our communities by selecting projects that convert every hour, dollar and member into service.

The Power of Service

Making the impossible possible. It all comes down to one thing—service. Our purpose has always been to provide service to those in need. Solving our world’s greatest problems is within reach if we work togeth-er. But only through service can we change lives and make the world a better place.

The Future is Now

The time to act is now. We can and we will make a lasting impact on our communities and the world. Join me in making this vision of our second century of service a reality.
