INTRODUCTION Dimeric metal complexes with an M2(µ-L)2 (M: metal; L:

bridging element) ring are common in chemistry.1-4Spectroscopicmethods indicated thatmany of these dimersexistasmixturesofisomers,whichhavebeenattributedtothesubstituentsattachedtothering.5-17However,theM–Lbondswithinthedimericcorecanbedifferentinnature,whichcouldimpactthespectroscopicresultsaswell.Meanwhile,theorbitalinteractionswithin the core vary depending on the distancebetweenMatoms.2Transitionmetalcomplexeswithnitrogen-containing ligands are well-known and have drawnconsiderable attention for decades in catalyzing versatilereactions such as the palladium-catalyzed amination of arylhalides.18-24 Given available lone-pair electrons, manynitrogen-basedligandsmaycoordinatetoanadditionalmetalcenter, leading to dimeric complexes with a core four-memberedring.Forinstance,DriverandHartwigreportedthereductive elimination from dimeric palladium amidocomplexes(Figure1a).8Recently,ourgroupsreportedthesynthesisofphosphine-

ligated neopentylpalladium(II) amido complexes thatunderwentreductiveeliminationto formCsp3–Nbonds.23Weattempted to synthesize the complex 1 (Ad2PCH2CH2OCH3-κ2P,O)Pd(neopentyl)NH(4-F-2-(OCH3)-C6H3, Figure 1b)containingaflexibleP,Oligandandananilidoligand.However,thiscomplexwas isolated inamixturewith itsdimerD,andrecrystallization of this mixture yielded crystals of pure DsuitableforX-raydiffraction.Kineticmeasurementsindicatedthat 1, but not D, underwent reductive elimination. Theseexperimental results suggested thatD ismorestable than1.AccordingtoasearchoftheCambridgeStructureDatabase,Dis the first structurally characterized example of a dimericphosphine-ligated alkylpalladium(II) amido complex.25Furthermore,theformationofstabledimericPd(II)complexescouldbeanunproductivedecompositionpathwaythathindersboth fundamental studies on the rare Csp3–N bond-formingreductive elimination and thus the development of catalyticreactions involving alkylpalladium(II) amido complexes.20-24Consideringboththeuniquestructureofthiscomplexanditspotentialimpactonfurtherwork,wechosetoinvestigatethedimeric Pd(II) complex D more closely with DFT (densityfunctional theory)andsought tounderstand itsbondingandthefactorsthatcontrolitsformation.

We investigatedpotential intermediates along both of these pathways, anddetermined the impact of dispersion effects on the relativeenergiesofthesecomplexes.CalculationsfurthersuggestthatthearrangementofdativeandcovalentM–Lbondswithinthefour-membered coreofD contrasts thoseof the stable transmonomeric complexes, and this difference in bondingmightexplainwhy1undergoes reductiveeliminationmorereadilythandimerization.

COMPUTATIONAL METHODS DFT calculationswere carried out using the Gaussian0926

programwithatwo-stepstrategy.GeometryoptimizationwasperformedwiththehybridfunctionalB3LYP27inthegasphasethen followedby single point calculations. ThePd atomwasrepresented by the Stevens/Basch/Krauss effective corepotential and associated triple-ξ valence basis set.28-30 Theremaining main group atoms were represented by the 6-31+G(d) and 6-311++G(d,p) basis set for geometryoptimizations and single point calculations, respectively.Continuum solvent effects of THF (tetrahydrofuran) andbenzeneutilizedtheSMD31modelforthestudyofdimerizationand reductive elimination, respectively. Dispersion effectswerecomparedbetweenGD332andGD3BJ33methods.Electrondensity and frontier orbital analyseswere performed at theB3LYP/SBK(Pd)/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory at the gas-phase optimized geometries. Single point calculations withM0634andB97D35functionals(6-311++G(d,p)basisset)werealso carried out at the B3LYP-optimized geometries.Calculations assumed 1 atm and 243.15 K unless otherwisenoted to simulate the experiments.23 Transition states andminimaweredifferentiatedontheirpotentialenergysurfacesbyhavingoneandzeroimaginaryfrequency.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Geometric Structure of D The structure of dimeric complexDwas obtained byDFT

optimizationinitiatedfromthecoordinatesdeterminedbyX-ray diffraction (Table 1). Each of the monomeric Pd(II)moietieswithinD containsoneneopentyl ligand,oneanilidoligandandonephosphineancillaryligand:Ad2PCH2CH2OCH3.ThephosphineligandsofDareantiwithrespecttothePd–Pdvector,whiletheNHprotonsoftheanilideareorientedantitooneanother.Theflexible–CH2CH2OCH3armpointsawayfromthepalladiumcenter,andthusthisligandpossessesκ-Pinsteadoftheexpectedκ2-P,Oligation.The dimeric core ofD is near planar: the dihedral angles

betweenPd1–N1–N2andPd2–N1–N2are168.4˚and170.1˚inthecalculationsandcrystalstructure,respectively(entry1).Thedifferencesbetweencalculatedandexperimentalbondanglesare within acceptable ranges (< 3.3˚, entries 2 - 5). BonddistancesdeterminedbyDFTcomputationstendtobelongerthan those determined by X-ray diffraction, although thepredicted values are still reasonable. For instance, theoptimizedPd1–N1bondlengthisgreaterthantheexperimentalvalueby0.04Å(~2%,entry6).ThedifferencebetweenPd1–N1andPd1–N2is0.08Åinthecalculationsversus0.03Åobservedfromexperiments(entries6and7).Moreover,thedifferencebetween Pd2–N1 and Pd2–N2 is 0.10 and 0.07 Å in thecalculations and experiments, respectively, reflecting thedifference in the trans influence between phosphine andneopentylligands,thedifferencebetweendativeandcovalentPd–Nbonds,oracombinationofbotheffects(entries8and9).

Geometric Structures of trans-Monomers NMRspectroscopysuggestedthatthedimerDandtheκ2-P,O

Among the four-coordinate monomers, 3cP is theprecursorleadingtoDviaPathII(Figure4).TheanglesofN–Pd–P and N–Pd–Pext are 89.0˚ and 85.7˚, respectively. Energetics of Neopentylpalladium(II) Amido Complexes The free energies of neopentylpalladium(II) amido

complexes are summarized in Figure 5. The results werecompared between B3LYP and B3LYP + GD3BJ. The latterincorporated the calculations with dispersion effects viaGD3BJcorrections.Isomertrans-2awassetasthefreeenergyorigininbothcases.Calculationswithoutdispersioncorrectionspredictedthat

thedimerDwasunstablerelativetotrans-2a(17.6kcal/molon a per palladium base). This was inconsistent with theexperimental results, and we considered that dispersioneffectsmayimpacttherelativeenergiesofthesecomplexes.Indeed, the free energy ofD is 8.6 kcal/molperpalladiumbelow trans-2a in the calculationswith GD3BJcorrections.The decrease in energy suggests that the favorablevdW/stericeffectscouldaccumulateamongthebulkyligandsinthedimericstructure.

Monomer trans-2b is less stable than the othersbecauseofthetwistedanilideligand.Notetrans-2candtrans-2d initially bearing nitrogen cis to phosphine both yield ageometrywith a roughly trans disposition of these ligandsafter optimization, thus resulting in free energies that areclose to each other (2.2 and 2.7 kcal/mol for trans-2c andtrans-2d,respectively).Incontrast,thefreeenergydifferencesamongthestudied

isomers are more significant for the four-coordinateintermediatesinthecalculationswithB3LYP.FormonomersinPathI,thelowestfreeenergyis9.9kcal/molfor3aT.WhileinPathII, thefreeenergiesfor3cPand3dP'areboth35.8kcal/mol,whichwouldmake themunlikely to form in anyappreciable concentration. In addition, monomers with anextraTHF(3aT,3cT''and3dT')aremorestablethanthosewith an extra phosphine ligand except 3bT, which is 7.5kcal/molhigherthan3bP.Forthethree-coordinatemonomers,thereisnosignificant

change of relative free energies between the resultscomputed with and without GD3BJ. For example, the freeenergy fortrans-2b is3.8kcal/mol inthecalculationswithGD3BJ corrections. However, the relative (to trans-2a) freeenergies decrease significantly for the four-coordinateintermediates when considering dispersion effects. Forexample, the free energies for 3cP and 3dP' are both 0.5kcal/molbelowtrans-2a.Calculations incorporating other dispersion effects than

Proposed Dimerization Pathways In our previous work, the transition state of reductive

elimination computed to be 24.6 kcal/mol above trans-2a(24.7 kcal/mol from the experiments).23 The successfulpredictionoftheenergybarrierpromptedustocomparethedimerandtransmonomers(1,trans-2aand3bT)underthesame conditions (Figure S-3 and Table S-4). Overall, theimpactofdispersionuponreductiveeliminationbarriers ismuchlessthantheimpactofdispersionuponthecalculateddimerization free energies. Only the calculations withdispersioneffectscorroboratethethermalstabilityofD.As noted above, D is more stable than 1, and yet 1

undergoes reductive elimination instead of dimerization.23Meanwhile,itisnotathermalneutralprocessanylongerforthe dimerization in the calculations. To answer theseconundrums,weproposethattrans-2monomerswouldnotreact to directly form D, but instead must first proceedthroughadimeric isomer such asQ (Figure6). There is astarkcontrastbetweenDandQ:thedativeandcovalentPd–Nbondsexchange theirpositionswithin thedimeric cores.Because the dative Pd–N bonds are flexible to stretch, itremainsunclearwhetherthedimericcoreofQisplanar,nearplanar(likethatofD)orhighlypuckered(likethoseofthe“Butterfly”dimersinFigure1a).Ontheotherhand,calculationsoptimizedanotherdimeric

structure of D' by exchanging the phosphine ligand andneopentyl positions ofD (Figure 6 and Table S-5). TotalelectrondensityanalysisindicatedthatthedimericcoreofD'issimilartothatofDwitheachpalladiumcenterformingadative bond to the nitrogen trans to the coordinatedphosphine (Figure S-4). The free energy ofD' is 5.9 - 6.9kcal/mol higher than D per palladium depending on themethods employed (Table S-6). The difference in energybetweenDandD'indicatesthatsuchanisomerasD'willbeaccessedinonlyverylowconcentrations.

In contrast, thesignificantdifferencebetweenDandQistheirdimericcorescontainingdativeandcovalentPd–Nbonds. Moreover,D ismorestablethanQimplyingthattheconversionfromQtoDcould be favorable and even irreversible. For the possibledimer-monomer equilibrium,D ismore favorable than thecis-2monomerswhileQ is unstable relative to the trans-2monomers. Among three-coordinate monomers, the cis-2monomersare less stable than the trans-2 onesdue to thestrongtransinfluenceofneopentylgroup. However, boththeextra phosphine and THF can stabilize the structuresespecially those with nitrogen cis to phosphine in thecalculations with dispersion effects. In addition, trans-2acomputedtobecompetitive,whichwasobtainedbymovingtheetherarmawayfromthemetalcenterof1androtatingthePd–Cneobond.Asthepossibleintermediates,thecis-2monomersviaPath

IImightdependonthedissociationofphosphineligandfromthe four-coordinate intermediates such as 3cP and 3dP'.Because 3cP is similar to 3dP', there is actually only onestable monomer with cis P,N configuration. While for themonomers with trans P,N configuration, two of them arestable: trans-2a and 3bT (or trans-2b). If we assume theequalopportunityforallthreestableintermediatestooccurand the cismonomer is not interconvertedwith the transones,theratiooftheproductwillbenear1to4forDand1,whichisconsistentwiththeexperiments(21%and79%forthedimerandmonomer,respectively).23Although our calculations strongly suggest that the

formationofDcouldstartwiththecis-2monomersviaPathII,thereisnotyetevidenceforthoseintermediates.Likewise,there is no experimental or computational support for Qeither. However, we cannot exclude the possibility thatQcouldbeformedbythetrans-2monomersviaPathI.Notably,calculations along with the experiments indicated thepresence of more species in solution, not just D and 1.23FurtherstudiesareunderwaytoassessthehypothesesaboutthecismonomersaswellasthedimericisomerQ.

CONCLUSIONS Computationalmethodswereemployedtoinvestigatethe

formationofdimericneopentylpalladium(II)amidocomplexD. Both the phosphine ligand and THF have substantialimpactonthecourseofthedimerization.ThestructureofDconsists of a four-membered ring involving dative andcovalentPd–Nbonds.ThedifferentPd–Nbondswithin thecorewereevaluatedbyelectrondensityandfrontierorbitalanalyses. Two possible pathways were assessed for dimerization

initiatedfrommonomerswithdifferentP–Pd–Ngeometries. However, the three-coordinatemonomersbearingnitrogencistophosphinewereunstableaftergeometryoptimizationdueto the large trans influenceof theneopentyl ligand.Tocompare the dimerization pathways, the four-coordinateprecursorswere proposed by coordinating either an extraphosphine ligand or THF to the metal center. The flexibleether arm of phosphine ligand may facilitate theisomerizationofcomplexesaswellastheformationoffour-coordinateintermediates.Calculationswithoutdispersionpredictthatκ-Pcomplexes

withnitrogentranstophosphinearethemoststablespecies.TheformationofD ishighlyendergonic(17.6kcal/molperpalladiumrelativetotrans-2a),whichisinconsistentwiththeexperiments. While for the possible four-coordinateintermediates, the large free energies render theminaccessible.Forexample,thefreeenergiesrelativetotrans-2aare35.8kcal/molforboth3cPand3dP'.ToassessvdW/stericeffectsfrombulkyphosphineligands,

dispersion corrections were implemented via single pointcalculations at the B3LYP gas phase-optimized geometries.Calculationswith dispersion effects predict that the κ2-P,Omonomer 1 and the four-coordinate intermediates withnitrogencistophosphinesuchas3cPand3dP'aresimilarinenergytotrans-2a.However,itwasnotyetathermalneutralprocess for thedimerization in the calculations though thefreeenergyofDislowerthantrans-2a(e.g.,-5.3kcal/molperpalladiumwithM06).

Althoughcalculationspredictseveraldimericisomersforneopentylpalladium(II) amido complexes, there is a singledimerthathasbeencrystallizedandcharacterized.Perhapstheunusual longdistanceofPd1–Pd2 (3.33Å in the crystalstructure)could limit thedelocalizationofelectronswithinthe dimeric core resulting in D only. Alternatively, theinterconversion among isomeric forms of the dimer insolutionisfastontheNMRtimescale.Nonetheless,thelone-pair electrons of nitrogen can differentiate D from Q byformingadativebondwithdifferentmetalcenterwithinthePd2(µ-NHAr)2 ring implying that theD/Q isomerism couldexistinthedimericmetalcomplexeswithanM2(µ-L)2ring.In summary, competing pathways for the formation of

dimeric neopentylpalladium(II) amido complexes wereevaluated with computational methods. It is likely that Dcouldbeobtainedbythecis-2monomersviaPathIIwhilethetrans-2 monomers could formQ via Path I. Moreover, theabsenceofdimer-monomerequilibriumbetweenDandthetransmonomersmightresultintheresistanceofthedimertoreductiveelimination.Lastbutnottheleast,stabilizingthree-coordinatemonomerscis-2candcis-2dwithanextraligandtoform3cPand3dP',respectively,maynotonlyshedlighton the mechanism of dimerization, but also benefit futurecomputational studies of transition metal complexes thatinvolve highly reactive specieswith very bulky ligands for

which dispersion effects are critical components of theirstability.
