EMILIE ROBINSON BA DESIGN FOR INDUSTRY

I am currently in my third year of study at Northumbria University, studying Design For Industry.

Curiosity has driven me since I was young, I have always found visual things extremely intriguing and I am constantly exploring my surroundings. Through this exploration I collect inspiration for my own work.

I have recently worked on live projects with various companies, such as, Philips, Bowers & Wilkins and Unilever. Working with companies has increased my industrial awareness and has provided me with an innovative yet realistic approach to design.

The purpose of this portfolio is to show the process behind the projects to better display my capabilities throughout the design process. Enjoy.

GOODGYM Whilst working for the non-profit organisation, GoodGym, I helped to shape the branding of the company. I designed posters, icons/logos, and created their new website. I also gained more insight into social enterprise and non-profit organisations.

I began by delving into previous sports campaigns and adverts and iconic logos of well known sporting events.

I took previous icons used within GoodGym’s old website and adpated them/explored various solutions.

CONCEPT 1 An investigation: two seperate objects,

useless on their own but when together they

work with eachother to create captivating

interactions.

Page 23: DFI Portfolio

CONCEPT 2The concept illustrates the influence of

aesthetics on product interaction and

customisation. It explores the relationship

between objects and the beauty of form.

DESIGN FORINDUSTRY

We often undertake live projects with industry collaborators, this year is no exception.

Such things can be a double-edged-sword, in that the things we do are often restricted by terms of a

Non-Disclosure Agreement. We always try to balance the educational benefit of the experiences the

projects provide with such restrictions.

The Design for Industry course has a 30+ year proven track record in working closely with industry,

one that we are proud of. We firmly believe that this helps to train design graduates that have real

world experience of working with clients to innovate and add value to their business.

We get some great feedback from those we work with – students are lauded for their ability to

quickly understand the values of a brand and translate that into new offerings and opportunities.

We would therefore like to beg your indulgence and perhaps to look beyond the veneer of ‘sketches’

and ‘renderings’ to their skills in defining the context of the design opportunity and their appreciation

of the key design criteria – ones that we feel set us apart from other courses. Our aim is for our

students to be able to add value and gain valuable insights that can allow you to innovate.

If you would like to know more about any particular student then please don’t hesitate to contact us

(details to the right), we would be more than happy to talk about what you’re looking for.

We wish you all the very best for a prosperous 2013 and beyond.

Research and innovation Working for a leading brand of baby products, I had three weeks to generate exciting, new commercial solutions that ‘Mum’s and Dad’s will love’. To do so, I carried out extensive research, and isolated key design directions. I problem solved to ensure a suitable solution, whilst following the specfic company deisgn DNA, and presented final concepts to the company.

Page 49: DFI Portfolio

Well presented project - with clear understanding of problems with current product offerings, consumer insights and brand DNA...designed in sympathy with the Brand form language...well considered and well done.“

Page 50: DFI Portfolio

Research and innovation Working for a multi-national consumer goods company, we aimed to bring about and encourage change in consumer behaviour, to do so we undertook extensive research and design iteration. Through this project I understood the significance of customer perceptions on existing brands and products and the extensive work and techniques needed to empathise with customers and change these perceptions.
