SPEC0070REV.6 Mar.1997 Jul.1997 Dec.1997

1. Outline

The DF350 series disk array subsystem is a device developed for large capacity data storage, high-speed data

transfer, and high reliability, connecting two (1 row) to twenty-one (4 rows + 1 spare) 3.5” compact magnetic

disk drives.

This subsystem consists of the array controller that controls compact disk drives laid out and connected as an

array and the compact disk drives (five drives in 1 row). As the host interface, the Ultra/Wide-SCSI interface is

used.

There are four types of DF350 subsystems; desktop, mini tower, cabinet, and rack mount. The desktop type is

divided into the DK type and DKH type, and rack mount type is divided into the RKH type and RKWH type. The

rack mount type can be mounted on a dedicated rack cabinet. Up to six sets of the RKH type can be mounted on a

dedicated U1 rack. Up to 4 sets of the RKWH type can be mounted on a dedicated U2 rack.

The DF350 supports RAID0, RAID1, RAID5 (4D+1P, 3D+1P, 2D+1P) and RAID0+1 (called RAIDA later) to

meet these purposes.

1.1 Outline of Functions

(1) SCSI-2 type interface

• The Ultra SCSI interface as the standard interface for small magnetic disk drives allowing high-speed,

high-performance data transfer can be selected.

(2) High-speed data transfer

• By activating multiple compact disk drives concurrently, data can be read and written at a high speed.

• In the Ultra-SCSI configuration, data can be read and written at the maximum speed of 40MB/s.

• By using a large-capacity non-volatile cache (16MB to 1GB/controller), speedup of command processing

when read/write is hit is achieved.

(3) Large capacity

• The DF350 cabinet type or rack mount type allows addition of compact disk drives.

• Up to 21 compact disk drives can be connected, so up to 357.7GB (cabinet/rack mount RKWH for

RAID0) can be realized. Furthermore, the rack mount type can realize up to 1.43TB (RKWH for RAID0)

if a dedicated rack cabinet is used for mounting.

• From the host, this equipment can be used as a large-capacity disk or as up to 8 logical drives.

* The capacity per row depends on the capacity of drives to be mounted.

In the minimum configuration, 2.0GB drives are used. The capacity in the RAID0/1 configuration is calculated for the case using

two drives(rack mount (RKWH) type using five/four drives), the capacity in the RAID5 configuration is calculated for the case

using five/four/three drives while the capacity in the RAIDA configuration is calculated for the case using four drives.

In the maximum configurations, it is assumed that the desktop (DK) type uses 8.7GB drives, while the others use 17.8GB drives.

• The number of user bolcks in the entire subsystem can be calculated form the following formula. For conversion into the storage

capacity, multiply the number of blocks by 512.

c RAID5

Number of blocks = m × 4 × Number of mounted rows

d RAID1/RAIDA

Number of blocks = m × int (Number of mounted drives/2) (*1)

e RAID0

Number of blocks = m × Number of mounted drives (*2)

*1 For int, fraction showuld be truncated.

*2 Number of mounted drives is 2 or more.

For the nubmer of blocks (m) per drive, see Table 1.2.

(4) High data usability

• In the RAID5 configuration, data can be read and written continuously without system down by using the

parity disk drive (1 set/row) against one failed disk drive.

(5) High data reliability

• The DF350 controller automatically generates and adds the original 4-byte data assurance codes to the data

from the host computer and writes the codes on the disk along with the data, thus enhancing data

reliability.

• On the data bus in the controller, the data assurance codes are automatically generated and checked to

enhance data reliability in data distribution/collection control inherent to the array.

(6) Diagnostic and maintenance functions

• With the panel indicator located on the subsystem main unit, subsystem diagnostics and maintenance can

be performed.

• Diagnostics and maintenance of this subsystem can be performed via the maintenance terminal (personal

computer) or LAN connected to the RS232C serial interface on the host computer or controller.

• By using an optional utility program, the equipment state can be checked and the faulty section can be

identified.

• By using a remote maintenance function (SNMP), the diagnosis of the system from an apart place can be

performed.

1.2 Precautions on Use

Be sure to back-up data for data recovery in case data should be lost due to an unexpected hardware

or software failure on the host computer or the DF350.

*1 • RAID0 is a configuration containing a group of single disk drives and does not have redundancy. RAID0

for this subsystem does not support the data striping function.

Notice : RAID5, RAID1 and RAIDA are the configuration with data reliability enhanced as a result of

having redundancy. Data may be lost due to an unexpected hardware or software failure on the

host or array subystem. Be sure to back up all data for data recovery when the data is lost.

*2 • When two or more RAID levels are not mixed.

• This capacity eliminates the control area on each drive.

• This capacity is calculated assuming that 1kbyte = 1,000bytes.

Page 23: df350spec

*3 • Time for baking up data on the cahce memory is indicated.

• The battery is fully charged.

• Non-volatility of data on the cache memory is ensured against power supply failures such as a sudden

power failure. When power is normally disconnected, data in the cache is transferred to the disk.

Therefore, the battery is not wasted uselessly.

• If the unit is not energized for more than a month, the over discharging of the battery occurs and it may be

cause an unrecoverable damage. In this case, the battery must be energized more than 24 hours at least

once a month, or store the unit with the switch of the battery off. Even when the switch is off, the battery

discharges naturally. Therefore, turn on the switch of the battery and energize it for 24 hours every three

months to charge it.

*4 • Basic : Minimum configuration (spare disk, redundant controller, redundant power supply not mounted.

However, the desktop type (DK) and large-capacity rack mount type (RKWH) has the power supply and

redundant power supply as the standard components.)

• Maximum : Maximum configuration (all of the mountable disk drives, redundant controller, and redundant

power supply are provided.)

*5 • Use of an uninterruptible power system (UPS) is recommended against sudden power failures.

*6 • The desktop type (DKH), rack mount type (RKH) and (RKWH) are mountable on a 19” rack that is being

sold in the market. In this case, dedicated rack rails corresponding to the number of rack mount type units

to be mounted are required.

CAUTION!

Also, there is a limitation on the weight. Contact us before mounting the desktop type (DKH), rackmount type (RKH) and (RKWH) on rack other than the U1 rack and U2 rack made by Hitachi.

• For any rack mount type mounted on the rack, LED indication on the central panel is used.

• Since the centralized power distributor (for 200V) and centralized power switch are provided on the rack,

power can be turned on/off by using them.

• A cable with single-phase 200V plug is attached to the rack as the standard component. If you want to

connect to the centralized power distributor directly, installation of the power cable is required.

• The plug shape and receptacle for each rack is as follows :

For U1 rack For U2 rackPlug shape NEMA standard L6-20P NEMA standard L6-30P

Receptacle L6-20R L6-30R

• Since the U2 rack uses the dual AC line, prepare two outlets. The dual system is allowed if each power is

led from a different AC line.

*7 •When the interface type in single-ended, the maximum transfer rate will be restricted to 20MB/s.

*8 • Powers required for the maximum configurations are shown.

When planning a facility such as an uninterrupted power supply (UPS), assume the power factor to be

100% (300W=300VA for example). The values shown are those for 100/200 volts. In case the tolerance is

included, the values may be exceeded.

*9 • It may take 2 minutes or more for starting up the subsystem when it is powered on within 30 seconds after

it is powered off. It is because the starting up immediately after powering off is restricted in order to

protect the drive system.

It may also take 2 minutes or more for starting up the subsystem if a failure occurs in it.

*10 •Hot replacement must be done by trained service personnel only (expect the drive).

2.3 Handling

This equipment is sensitive against vibration, shock, and dust. Special care must be given to handling so that

static electricity or an unreasonable force will not be applied to the subsystem.

2.3.1 Packing

Apply moisture-proof packing to DF350.

(1) For packing, use the inner, outer, and shock absorbing materials used for transportation from the

manufacturing factory or use the shock absorbing structure that prevents direct shock.

(2) Mark the top and bottom clearly on the outer surface of the packing box so that the box will not be put

upside down. Also, mark the precaution for careful handling.

5. Interface

5.1 SCSI Connection Specifications

5.1.1 Interface cable (daisy-chain connection)

a + b + ... + n + Cable length inside the subsystem =<20 m (For differential SCSI)

a + b + ... + n + Cable length inside the subsystem =<5 m (For single-ended devices)

Note 1: Up to 8 devices including the host, this subsystem, and other SCSI devices can be connected to the SCSI

bus. (Up to 16 devices can be connected when they use Wide SCSI interface.) Since the cable length

inside the DF350 is 1.0 m (maximum), pay attention to the SCSI cable length upon connection.

Note 2: If DF350 is to be used as a single-ended SCSI device, the maximum transfer speed is limited to 20MB/s

(of wide SCSI) by default.

Note 3: Within approximately 3 seconds after the DF350 is started, it cannot respond with selection to the

command from the host. Therefore, the initiator should suppress command issuance during this period.

Alternatively, the host should be activated after it is confirmed that the DF350 is ready. Before the

subsystem is ready, reading from and writing to the subsystem are not allowed.

Note 4: Before disconnecting power for DF350, complete the power-off process on the host.

Note 5: When power is turned off with the main switch on the front of the subsystem (or when the SCSI

terminator power becomes low in remote mode), DF350 writes all data, remaining in the cache memory

and not reflected to the disk, to the disk (i.e. de-staging process). This process requires several seconds

to tens of minutes before the subsystem power is turned off. If power is directly disconnected with the

breaker switch on the rear of the equipment or with the breaker supply power to the subsystem, the de-

staging process is not allowed to be performed. Therefore, the cache memory enters the battery back-up

mode. In this case, the data assurance time is as per the cache back-up time shown in "2. Basic

Specifications". For normal power off, be sure to use the main switch on the front of the subsystem to

turn power off (or set the SCSI terminator power down to the Low level in remote mode), make sure

that the POWER LED goes out, then turn off the breaker switch. Also, perform this procedure before

maintenance such as replacement of each part.

5.1.12 Bus phase

The SCSI bus states during operation between the initiator and target are classified into eight phases shown

below:

(1) Bus free phase

The SCSI bus is free and the initiator can start a new operation or the target can re-connect the initiator.

In the bus free phase, all signals on the SCSI bus are "0".

(2) Arbitration phase

In this phase, the initiator or target acquires the right to use the SCSI bus.

(3) Selection phase

In this phase, the initiator selects the target.

(4) Re-selection phase

In this phase, the target re-selects the initiator.

(5) Command phase

In this phase, the target receives a command from the initiator via the data bus.

(6) Data transfer phase

In this phase, data transfer with the initiator via the data bus is performed.

This phase is skipped if the command is not accompanied by data transfer.

(7) Status phase

In this phase, the status byte after command execution is transferred from the target to the initiator via the

data bus.

(8) Message phase

In this phase, message bytes are transferred from the target to the initiator or from the initiator to the target

via the data bus.

By following the eight steps for a command, a series of operations such as command receiving, execution, and

completion report are executed.

For information transfer phases (i.e. command, data transfer, status, and message phases), the target posts to the

initiator which phase is currently in progress with a combination of three signals; I/O, C/D, and MSG.

Table 5.1.3 shows the correspondence between the signal combinations and phases.

reports the status to the host during the status phase. However, this excludes the case that the command is

cleared by the ABORT message, ABORT TAG message, CLEAR QUEUE message, BUS DEVICE RESET

message, or RESET status (including POWER ON RESET).

SPEC0560REV.5 Mar.1997 Jul.1997

Status byte codes are defined as follows:

GOOD:

This status indicates that the controller completed the command successfully.

CHECK CONDITION:

This status indicates that the command ended abnormally due to an error, exception, or abnormal state

resulting in setting of the sense data.

After this status is reported, the host can acquire the detailed information on the error by issuing the

REQUEST SENSE command.

After the CHECK CONDITION status is returned to a host and before the REQUEST SENSE command is

issued, activation from another host may result in the BUSY status. Therefore, the REQUEST SENSE

command must be issued.

Note: If a command ends with the CHECK CONDITION status, be sure to issue the REQUEST

SENSE command without a tag. The REQUEST SENSE command with a tag may result in

incorrect reporting of the error.

BUSY:

This status indicates that the controller is busy.

The controller reports this status if it cannot accept the command from the host.

INTERMEDIATE/GOOD:

This status indicates that each command (excluding the last command) in the link is completed successfully.

If this status is not reported, the link command chain is disconnected.

RESERVATION CONFLICT:

This status is reported when the host attempts to access the logical unit reserved by another host. However,

this status is not reported for the RELEASE command. (The controller executes the RELEASE command.)

QUEUE FULL:

This status indicates that the command queue is full and the command from the host cannot be accepted.
