AARP Tax Assistance at the DCL

Through Thurs., April 14, the AARP will provide a free tax preparation service at the DeWitt Community Library. This service is geared toward helping seniors and low-to-middle income families who need help pre-paring their taxes. Reservations for appointments are required and are offered on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 10:00 am, 11:30 am, and 1:30 pm. To make an appointment, stop by the Library’s Front Desk or call us at (315) 446-3578. Be sure to bring a copy of last year’s filing (if you have one) and a valid form of ID. Preparers are also asking patrons to bring their social security cards due to changes in filing.

The Library will have limited tax forms and booklets available. Additional forms can be requested from the Librarian on duty or by logging onto one of our public internet computers.

We do charge a .15¢ per page printing fee.

Linda White, longtime staff member at DeWitt Com-munity Library, has retired after 40 years of service. Linda has worked as a circulation and processing as-sistant since May 7, 1976. She has seen six direc-tors, three locations, and countless staff and librari-ans. Processing books has been her favorite job.

Linda will spend time with her husband, Robert, who retired 8 years ago, her daughter, Laurie, and a new granddaughter, Pearle.

She will be missed. - Linda Wozniak

LONGTIME STAFF MEMBER RETIRES

DeWitt Community Library staff participated in the TACNY Maker Hall event as part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Cele-bration at Nottingham High School in January. Erin Cassidy, Assistant Director for Technology and Digital Services, shows off the Heart & Lungs Lab app on one of two Apple iPads that will soon be available for checkout at the Library. The iPads are part of the Library’s Discovery To Go collection and are preloaded with more than 40 apps that pair with items in the collection. The Heart & Lungs Lab app, showing how the circulatory and respiratory systems work, adds a more inter-active experience when used with the heart model, also pictured. See more about app pairings on page 3.

Toothpick World came to Terrific Thursdays as Stan Munro showed 40 children and their parents how to build almost any-thing with tooth-picks. The popular Pinterest trend of adults coloring intricate designs was brought to the library as part of the monthly Crafting with Kelly series in January.

In 1990, the Crime Writers’ Association (CWA) released their picks for the 100 best mystery novels. Five years later, the Mys-tery Writers of America (MWA) released their choices. Many titles appear on both lists. However, there are variations in rank-ings and unique listings on both. And though it may be time for an update, these titles are still worth the read. The full lists are available to view on Wikipedia: CWA List: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Top_100_Crime_Novels_of_All_Time MWA List: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mystery_Writers_of_America Unfortunately, not every last book on the list is readily available in print or digital format. However, the Library exhaustively searched for and ordered the ebook version of every title that was available. You can now find these books to read on your Kindle, Nook, iPad, and tablet through our digital catalog at: http://onlib.lib.overdrive.com/ Many of the books are still available in print through the library system, but you’ll now be able to find some of the more obscure ones in ebook format. Have you read the Top 5?

CWA List:

1. The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey

2. The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler

3. The Spy Who Came in From the Cold by John Le Carre

4. Gaudy Night by Dorothy Sayers

5. The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie

MWA List:

1. The Complete Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

2. The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett

3. Tales of Mystery & Imagination* by Edgar Allan Poe

4. The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey

5. Presumed Innocent by Scott Turow *Though this was likely a particular edition of Poe’s works, reading any complete volume of his stories (and poems) would be the equivalent.

Do you have a discerning palette for tech? Wine connois-seurs pride themselves on making perfect food and wine parings. Here at the DCL, we make parings with science, technology, engineering, and math kits and apps from our Discovery To Go collection. A good pairing is a perfect partnership that fosters learning through interactive and engaging play and fun. Here is a small sampling of our fa-vorite parings for only our most discerning library patrons.

Pairing Notes 1. The delights of the uni-verse are available to experi-ence with Pocket Universe, a simple app that displays the stars and constellations. Per-fect with the Celestron FirstScope for forays into as-tronomy.

2. Kids love dinosaurs; it’s a fact. We know just enough about them to make them ex-citing. We can learn about the world of the dinosaurs and other incarnations of the early Earth through fossils. Pairing Ultimate Dinopedia and the Advanced Fossil Colelction kit is a winner!

3. Forecasting weather is one form of telling the future.

This pairing of the Water Cycle HD app and Weather Center kit elucidates the intricacies of weather and the water cycle in a hand-on way making invisible things like pressure and humidity understandable to kids.

4. The human body is a marvel of intricate, interwoven systems. The robust Muscles for Kids app and Mini Torso kit paring helps kids explore all the vital organs and hidden bodily wonders, because it’s what’s on the inside that counts, right?

5. Three of our most popular kits just got better with the addition of Exploriments, a STEM-oriented app, cen-tered on how simple electrical circuits work. The Snap Circuits kits are a fun, hands-on way to learn about the same electrical flows.

What do you need to get these great pairings? Just your library card, no designated driver required! With these ex-cellent pairings you can expect lots of engaged learning for your youngster! Learn all about the DTG collection during the DTG Stop & See spring sessions in the library on March 9, April 13, and May 11! Test out YOUR pairing abilities during our DTG STEM Brainstorms workshops for parents and educators, when we will take out the DTG technology and equipment and brainstorm how best to use them for educational support and opportunities! DTG STEM Brainstorms are themed and will be held March 23, April 27, and May 25. See the spring program guide for themes.
