Specifications
- Equipment Safety Safety of the operator is one of the main concerns in designing and developing a new piece of equipment. Designers and manufacturers build in as many safety features as possible. However, every year many accidents occur which could have been avoided by a few seconds of thought and a more careful approach to handling equipment. Many accidents can be avoided by observing the precautions in this section. To avoid personal injury, study the precautions listed in this manual and follow them. • Do not attempt to operate this
equipment under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
• Review the safety instructions with all
users annually. • This equipment is dangerous to
children and persons unfamiliar with its operation. The operator should be a responsible adult familiar with farm machinery and trained in this equipment’s operation.
• Do not allow persons to operate or
assemble this unit until they have read this manual and have developed a thorough understanding of the safety precautions and of how it works.
If you have any questions not answered in this manual or require additional copies, please contact your DewEze dealer or Harper Industries.
General Spear Bed Safety
SAFETY WARNING!
Contact with the spear tips can cause injury or damage to property. Make sure that the area surrounding the spears is clear of obstacles, especially humans or animals. • Replace any CAUTION, WARNING,
DANGER or instruction decal that is not readable or is missing.
• Make sure all safety pins are in place
and flatbed mounting bolts are secure to the truck frame.
• Make sure hinges and joints are well
greased, especially during off season to prevent rusting and binding.
• Check with truck dealer for any load
limits, additional suspension or tire requirements. The flatbed’s lifting capability may exceed the truck’s load capacity in some instances.
Electric / Hydraulic Safety
SAFETY WARNING!
Hydraulic system operates under high pressure and escaping fluid can penetrate the skin. • The electric motor has a 60% duty
cycle; meaning – if it is used for six minutes, is should be allowed to cool off for four minutes.
• Replace hydraulic hoses when they
show signs of wear or cracking.
Safety Guidelines
Beginning Operation • Make sure that engine is running while
operating the Spear Bed. Loading • Back the truck against the bale with
the spears pointing backward and parallel to the ground.
• Depress LOAD side of rocker switch
on hand control until the spears are pointing upward and perpendicular to the ground, allowing complete visibility of the taillights.
SAFETY WARNING! Obstructing sight of the taillights may cause a serious traffic accident. Unloading • Depress UNLOAD side of rocker
switch until bale rests on ground and spears are parallel to ground.
• Drive away from bale slowly. Storing the spears • Store the spears in the two cylinders
incorporated into the toolbox.
Check Daily or Before Use • Check hydraulic oil level. • Examine hydraulic hoses for cracks or
loose fittings.
SAFETY WARNING! Do not check for hydraulic leaks with your hands. Use a piece of wood or cardboard. Hydraulic fluid escaping under pressure can penetrate the skin and may cause death if not treated immediately. Grease • The DewEze Spear Bed has grease-
less bearings. No grease is required. Hydraulic Oil • Change hydraulic oil when it is milky in
appearance, or annually. • In cold weather, the Spear Bed will
move slower than normal until the hydraulic oil warms up.
Other Maintenance Notes • High heat, 190° or greater, can be
damaging to the hydraulic system. Feel various parts of the system to make sure there are no “hot spots” which may indicate a problem.
• In the off-season, run the bed at least
twice a month to prevent valve condensation.
Operating Instructions Maintenance
6
Auxiliary Switch • The Spear Bed hand control has an
additional switch that may be used for an auxiliary work circuit.
Toolboxes • The Spear Bed includes one toolbox
(20” or 30” option) where the E/H Power Unit is mounted.
• Additional under-the-bed and across-
the-bed toolboxes may be purchased from your DewEze dealer.
Work Lights • DewEze has available an optional set
of stationary or swing lights that provide lighting for the rear of the bed.
Problem Symptom Possible Solutions Hydraulic Pump
No Oil Flow • CHECK OIL LEVEL IN RESERVOIR. If oil level is low, check for leaks in system.
• CHECK FOR WORN COUPLER BETWEEN PUMP AND MOTOR. Replace coupler.
• VALVE NOT FUNCTIONING. Check for disconnected wires at solenoid. Replace solenoid coil if it does not engage.
Hydraulic Pump
No Oil Pressure
• CHECK FOR POSSIBLE LEAKS IN SYSTEM. Replace hoses. • INTERNAL PUMP DAMAGE. Replace pump. • CHECK FOR MALFUNCTIONING SWITCH. Replace switches. • PRESSURE RELIEF SPRING IS BROKEN ALLOWING OIL TO
BYPASS SYSTEM. Replace spring.
Electric Motor
Does Not Engage
• CHECK FOR BLOWN FUSE. Replace 200 amp fuse. • CHECK FOR BAD SWITCHES IN SYSTEM. Replace switches.
