Onam 2020Sunday, August 30, 2020Onam (Sravana in Sanskrit) is also the day of Vamana Jayanti. It is on this day that Lord Vishnu took the form of a dwarf (Vamana) to
suppress the ego of an otherwise good and popular King, Mahab-ali (Grandson of Prahalada). The King loved his subjects very much and hence asked the Lord to allow him to visit his subjects once a year on that day. Hence, this day is celebrated in Kerala as the return of their favorite King. The homes are beautifully decorated and there is an ambiance of festivity everywhere
in anticipation of the return of the King. Boat races, floral decorations, cultural performances like Mohini Aattam, Kathakali, Chaakiyaar Koo-thu, music concerts are common during this festival. Some communi-ties consider this to be the beginning of a new year. Temples in Kerala have special pujas on this day10:00 am Purvanga Puja, Ananthapadmanabha Abhishekam, Vishnu

We provide these services through two
distinct facilities Paschima Gaya (Paścimā gayA – पि#चम गया) & Paschima Kashi (Paścimā Kāśi – पि#चम काशी) for Pitru Karma & Apara Karma respectively. This is an important and essential project for the temple and the community. Please join sankalp (Working Group for Akshaya Vata). 5SSVT Newsletter Aug 2020 Akshaya Vata Sandesh 20 Jul 2020
MMaahhaallaayyaa PPaakksshhaa Our ancestors leave their abode and come down to the world of mortals and occupy the houses of their descendants. They are visiting us. We, Hindus follow the prescribed rites, the sraddha and other appropriate pitru kaarya during this important period. We firmly believe that the offerings reach the departed souls immediately and directly, as ordained by Lord Yama. Mahalaya Paksha is a 16- lunar day “period of remembrance” when we pay homage to our ancestors (Pitru). It is indeed a special period dedicated to making an offering to express our gratitude to all the previous generations of people who have contributed to our life. This period is known many names including but not limited to Pitru Paksha, Pitri Pokkho, Solah Sraadha, Kanagat, Jitiya, and Apara Paksha. It starts on Prathama (Wed, 02 Sep 2020) and ends on Amavasya (Wed, 16 Sep 2020)
We have taken all the things that we have today for granted. But without the generations that came before us, firstly we would not exist here; secondly, without their contribution we would not have all the things that we have today. So, as Sanatani, during this important period express our gratitude to all of them. It is done not only for our dead parents, but also all our ancestors as an expression of gratitude. Rites performed for each of the 15 days of the fortnight are considered important and considered equal to that being performed in holy places like Gaya. We (@SSVT) are blessed to have our knowledgeable acharyas, Parichaaraka and other administrative staff who can help us to perform this required rituals and seek blessings of our ancestors and forefathers during the period of Mahalaya Paksha. According to our scriptures and directions from elders, adhering to prescribed observations and performing the sraddha during Mahalaya Paksha would provide cordial & harmonious relationship; relief from physical & mental challenges; provide stability & peace of mind and relief from other malefic effects of Pitru Dosha.

Special Utsavam & Chara Prathishtapana Friday, July 31 to Sunday, August 30, 2020
Worship to the Hindu pantheon has always been both in-person and virtual. Many Hindus have small shrines in their homes and often visit temples, while others do so only occasionally. As the COVID-19 pandemic has now shown, physical and virtual forms of worship are acceptable as long as they are carried out with reverence and follow sacred traditions. Assuming the guidelines continue to permit, from July 31-August 30, SSVT is planning on having one weekend of special functions for each of our 5 major deities. Over 5 weeks, SSVT will celebrate Sri Ayyappa, Sri Siva, Sri Subrahmanya, Sri Ananthapadmanabha and Sri Venkateswara/Balaji along with the Parivara devatas. Devotees can participate in-person or virtually.
On August 30th the celebration will conclude with Chara Prathistapana of the four Utsava Vigrahas of Durga, Lakshmi, Saraswati and Chandika Parameshwari, along with two Vahanas (Simha - Lion and Aswa – Horse). This also coincides with ONAM Day. Devotees can participate virtually or in-person by following safety guidelines,
Devotees can sponsor all five weeks of pujas, Prathistapana or any weekend. Any level of support helps at this difficult time as we maintain the temple and our core team of dedicated priests and staff.
