The Australian Army Band, Tasmania is a hard-swinging, exciting and innovative ensemble based at Anglesea Barracks Hobart. The Band’s instrumentation consists of a traditional line-up of saxophones, trumpets, trombones, rhythm and vocals. The repertoire ranges from traditional big band (Glenn Miller, Count Basie and Woody Herman) through to funky versions of Stevie Wonder and Michael Buble arrangements. The Band members also enjoy playing charts of modern big bands such as the Gordon Goodwin Big Band and works composed by James Morrison and Ed Wilson. The band is under the musical direction of Captain Matt Chilmaid and features the local vocal talents of Amelia Johnson and Nic Courto.Appearing at Musos in the Mall and Devonport Football Club (Sat 28 July)

An icon of Australian jazz, Barnard’s playing is notable for his big, rich sound and the consummate ease of his flowing solo lines. Although his name was made, and his fame spread, through his forceful playing in the traditional jazz style this is by no means the extent of his huge talent. Barnard’s is the perfect mainstream style, a cross between the lyricism and drive that the trumpet can achieve. He has played successfully in most of the major (and minor) jazz festivals in the world both with his own band and as a featured artist with international all-star line-ups.Appearing at the VIP Happy Hour (Fri 27 July), A Tribute to Louis Armstrong and Great American Songbook (Sat 28 July) and Bob Barnard in Centenary Court (Sun 29 July)

Cardboard CollectionBusinesses are reminded to only leave waste cardboard out for collection Monday to Friday. Unfortunately Council is unable to collect waste cardboard from businesses over the weekend as Veolia’s recycling plant doesn’t operate on weekends. In recent weeks some businesses have been leaving out waste cardboard for collection on the weekends but this cardboard has been collected with the garbage and ended up in landfill. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

“Did You Know” Fact Sheet – Devonport Regional Homemaker Centre

Regional ZoningThe amendment to the planning scheme for the Devonport

Regional Homemakers Centre as endorsed by Council on

Monday 18 June allows for the assessment of a showroom

which has a size less than 500 squared metres as a

discretionary application.

It is also proposed to extend the range of goods that can be

displayed and sold within a showroom in the Homemaker

Centre zone. Permitted showrooms within the zone must

comply with the following definitions:

• The goods that can be displayed and sold in any of the

showrooms must largely comprise

• Furniture and floor coverings

• Electrical appliances, including whitegoods and

computer equipment

• Home entertainment equipment

• Manchester, curtains and blinds

• Camping and outdoor recreation equipment

• Office equipment and supplies

• Building, construction hardware goods

• Garden and landscaping materials

• Auto accessories

• Pet supplies and ancillary services

• Furnishings, fabrics and homewares

• Swimming Pools and spas

• Baby and children’s goods, children’s play equipment

and accessories

• Sporting, leisure, fitness goods and accessories

• Goods and accessories which:

• Require a large area for handling, display and

storage of goods; or

• Require direct vehicle access to the building by

customers for the purpose of loading or

unloading goods into or from their vehilces

after purchase

• Any combination of these goods provided that the

sale or hire of clothing or footwear is not a

predominant activity

Floor AreaThe intent of the introduction of both the definition of

‘showroom’ and the minimum floor space of 500 square

metres was to preclude retail that was better suited to the

CBD from establishing at the Homemaker Centre. This was

intended to protect the primacy of the CBD within the

Devonport Retail Hierarchy.

A provision that 10% of the total floor area can comprise

showrooms with a floor area of less than 500 squared metres,

provides Council with the opportunity to consider

applications on their merit without compromising the

objectives of the zone. The fact that 90% will be larger,

protects the CBD as the primary retail site for general

shopping in Devonport.

The proposed changes to the types of goods that can be

sold as the dominant good in a showroom at the site, with

the exception of party supplies, can be supported as they are

consistent with the intent of the zone.

Definition of Showroom GoodsThe Devonport and Environs Planning Scheme states that

a showroom is “...any building or part thereof over 150

square metres in floor area used or intended to be used for

the display and/or sale and/or hire of bulky items requiring

an extensive display area.”

2013 Financial Assistance SchemeDevonport is a vibrant City as a result of the hard work and commitment of its community. The Council values the contributions individuals and groups make to the cultural, social and economic development of Devonport. Through the provision of a Financial Assistance Scheme, the Council supports projects, programs and activities developed for the benefit of Devonport’s residents and visitors. The Financial Assistance Scheme provides the opportunity for organisations to apply for funding assistance under the following areas.

Community Small GrantsUp to $3000 available to non-profit organisations to provide programs that enhance health and well-being, environmental sustainability, arts, culture and heritage, and sports and recreation. Economic Development and Events SponsorshipThree categories of funding available for local to international social, cultural, environmental, sport and recreational initiatives and events held in the Devonport municipality. Digital coaching and workshops for business owners and managers Digital Ready is a coaching and workshop based program to help Tasmanian businesses enhance their online knowledge, skills and confidence. The program is designed to demonstrate the power of the online economy and how you can further maximise the return to your business by being involved.

The program is targeting businesses that want to take the next step online, and is designed to be attended by business decision makers.
