DEVONIAN TRAIL CONSTRUCTION UPDATE December 2016 Parks, Recreation and Culture Phone: 780-968-8400 Email: [email protected] Wilco Contractors Northwest Inc. began construction in May 2016 with an anticipated completion date of December 2016. Despite some unfavorable weather this summer, they were able to keep to the original schedule for the construction of sections 1, 2 & 3. Section 4, which includes a boardwalk and a portion of trail to the Devonian Botanical Garden is scheduled to be complete by spring 2017. New signage will also be installed along the trail. Construction Update Changes Along the Way As with all projects of this nature, there were some unexpected minor changes that needed to be made. Trail alignment: Due to gas line locations and the need to maintain trail grades, the east section of the trail along Banksiana road needed to be moved closer to the road. Some minor adjustments were made near the entrance into the University of Alberta property to accomodate pipelines in the area. Other concerns: A small retaining wall was built so that a section of trail could be flattened to address sightline concerns from a resident’s driveway. Soil testing was conducted on trail base fill. Test results showed that the soil was clean and there were no issues with the material. T-bollards and jersey curbs were installed to prevent OHV access, but as a result, restricted access to permitted equestrian use. Staff will continue to explore potential solutions. Signage will be installed near Tucker’s Field to assist with ongoing concerns regarding hunting and OHV use. View from section 2 overlooking the North Saskatchewan River Although the trail will not be maintained during the 2016-2017 winter season, those wishing to use the trail are still able to do so. Users should take precautions based on weather conditions. We will work with the future Trail Stewardship committee to determine service levels, particularly in the winter months. Stewardship Committee A Trail Stewardship committee will be established in 2017. The goal of this committee will be to provide advice and direction about trail operations, service levels and provide support when it comes to ensuring proper trail usage and user safety. Information about this committee and how you can get involved will be available in early 2017. Winter Access www.parklandcounty.com/trails
