FEATURE

DEVON MUSIC | SEPTEMBER 2013

2013 has been a busy year for British 5 piece Brother & Bones; two headline tours, a new EP, a summer packed full of festival shows and their first venture over to the USA. Next month they’re coming to stay with us on the south coast for gigs in Southampton, Portsmouth & Bournemouth so we thought we’d catch up with them and see what they’ve got in store for us.

So, the new EP is due out imminently, what can we expect?

Rich: Yeah, the new EP is out in Autumn. We’re really proud of it. It was recorded in a studio in Wales which was a really good experience for us as it was the first time we’ve had the right space, especially for recording drums, where we can record live but still have a good, roomy sound that’s really natural. We’ve produced it ourselves too so there’s a lot of our personality in there. There’s definitely some big, epic moments as well as some really intimate moments with a live track that we did which is just piano and a stripped back arrangement so there’s a bit of everything in there.

We know your live shows are pretty special, how do you manage to capture that in a recording?

Yiannis: This is the dilemma we’ve been having. In the past what we’ve done is try and replicate what we’ve done live on record but I think it’s transpired that’s actually a lot harder to do because you’re never going to capture exactly what you do live on a record…because it’s a record. So with this recording we’ve been using different textures and trying to think of it as two different entities; live and recording and take it to the next level with experimenting and trying new things.

You’re very much a self-made band, having achieved so much already through your own determination, how did you get started and how did the band come together as a unit?

Rich: I suppose we started how a lot of bands started. I’ve known Rob for years and years; we’ve played music to-gether a lot. I knew James for years from him playing in a rock band, watching him play guitar in the same venues and then I got introduced to Yiannis and Si through mutual friends.

James: It was quite natural wasn’t it, really? We got together, it worked well live so it kind of grew from there. It be-came much more of a business or much more of a reality when we actually started doing gigs together….

Robin: We’re a business?

James: Well, you know, the fact that we thought, actually this works quitewell, let’s take it seriously, rather than just for fun.

Yiannis: And the fact that we’ve got to where we are just by hard grafting ourselves means we have had to treat it like a bit of a business in a way, where everyone’s got their roles...James does everything!

What?We’re a business?

FEATURE It’s been a pretty hectic summer, full of festivals – any particular highlights or stand out favourites?

Si: Yeah, this summer we went to Ride Festival in Colorado, which was 10,000ft up in the mountains. Beautiful scenery – we got invited out there and it was a fantastic experience for us all.

Is America somewhere you want more experience of?

All: Yeah!

Rich: Definitely, it was amazing. The fact that we were out there in the first place was due to complete luck that the festival organiser found us on YouTube. So to be the only British band on the line up and to play with some real leg-ends was incredible. We got to meet quite a few people and everyone was really humble and really welcoming. So we saw some great music and just had a ball!

James: I think it was really great playing in America as, no questions asked they seemed to get our style of music. It was amazing to go somewhere fresh for the first time and get that kind of reception. So definitely from that experi-ence, we’re all massively keen to get back out to America.

What’s your ultimate show goal? The one that marks the ‘yeah, we’ve made it’ point?

Yiannis: Glastonbury, gotta be, hasn’t it?

Rich: Yeah, Glastonbury. You can’t NOT want to play Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury, that’s just impossible. Big stages work really well for us so Coachella, Benicassim, Glasto; they’re all the ones we want to go and play because it would be amazing.

James: With regards to venues, we’ve always talked about Jools Holland. I think that really would mark it, I suppose more for music lovers and critics and ourselves…..just to be asked.

Yiannis: I think that when you’re in that position where you’ve got a room full of 10,000 people or whatever and you know that they’re there to see you…. I think, for me that would be a massive changing point.

Rich: As for support, if Zeppelin ever did another reunion gig, imagine getting the support on that show. I think I’d have a meltdown!

James: Can you imagine?!? I think that would probably be the only time we’d ever get stage fright!

Rich: I would be sh**ting myself.

Are there plans for a full length album soon?

Rich: No. We don’t do albums. We ONLY do EP’s. We have 99 EP’s ready to come now. You can have them one by one. One per year!! (ha ha)

Robin: This EP, if it comes out the way we think it’s going to come out it will definitely speed up that process so I don’t think it’s going to be too long, given that this is the blueprint to how we want to approach it.

Finally, tell our readers who you are and what it would say on your headstone?

Rich Thomas (vocals & acoustic guitar) – Pasty Pits Jesus…..an old soulJames Willard (backing vocals & electric guitar) – Disney Rock God Si Robinson (backing vocals & bass) – Wet Blanket with a wild sideRobin Howell-Sprent (drums/percussion) – Noddy aka Silent Bob. The one you hear the most about….. Yiannis Sachinis (drum kit) – Cookie Monster aka Yes Chef. Seriously, try his food…

FEATURE Back for a fourth year the annual Halloween Zombie Ball has grown year on year and this year boasts the biggest and strongest line up to date. It takes place Saturday 26th October 2013 at Exeter Phoenix from 5pm, Straight after the family orientated Zombie Walk through Exeter City Centre were hundreds of people get the chance to dress as the undead and walk about the busy and bustling city centre as the procession snakes its way towards the Ball.

The brains behind the events is award winning local DJ Mike James who said “Over the past few years i have prided myself on building on the year before and this years event is no exception with the biggest headline act for the ball along with the hottest local talent from the west country, We have more arena’s and acts from to helping build a solid event. We have have added a cinema featuring shorts by regional directors of Zombie/Horror, A Steam punk party room and two rooms of live music with a dozen or so bands all headed up by Bleed From Within who earlier this summer won Best New Band at the Golden Gods Awards at the 02 Arena in London as well as headlining stages at festivals all summer.

Mike James caught up with Bleed From Within frontman Scott Kennedy earlier this year >

Mike: In the past year alone you have been main support to some pretty big acts like Testament & Megadeth playing at some massive shows, that must have been insane? Scott:Yeah it has been, we got to play Brixton Academy, I’ve dreamed of playing that venue since i was a wee child and it was genuinely everything you’d want it to be and more. Mike: Its a great venue, So come on dude, how was Megadeth? Scott: They were amazing absolutely the most humble and loveliest guys, We didn’t really hang out but they came an introduced themselves and on the last day of the tour Dave Mustaine asked us to his dressing room for a wee drink and he said he really liked the band, He was cool as .F@@k.....!!! man, he really was a nice guy. Mike: You have been announced for the Metal Hammer - Defenders Of The Faith Tour with Amon Amarth this autumn as well as playing the Halloween Zombie Ball in Exeter this autumn, Is it touring non stop from now on then? Scott: Yes pretty much, and the Zombie Ball sounds great I can’t wait for that one I love Zombies, I’ve just finished watching the new series of Walking Dead before coming on tour, I’m totally obsessed with Zombies. I’ll be dressing up at the Halloween Zombie Ball and taking full advantage of being a Zombie! I literally can’t wait for that one man its going to be a great event! Melodic pop rock from the Yashin frontman

Seminal punk rock heroes

Pop rockers from South Wales

Straight up hard rock from London

Atmospheric, poignant and HEAVY

Recently released solo EP ‘Pressure Makes Diamonds’ is making its mark and with its weighty emotional content fans are likely to gain a real sense of getting to know Harry better. Well-crafted with grabby hooks and commanding build-ups you’re bound to catch yourself whistling these tunes before too long. Don’t miss Harry as he embarks on his first solo tour this month!

One of the definitive early punk bands, The Damned were instrumental in kick-starting the original punk rock scene. Never ones to be afraid to push themselves musically, throughout their years together they’ve cruised through whatever areas of progressive, psychedelic, goth and pop/rock take their fancy.

If you like a singalong with your mosh then The Blackout should be right up your street. Combining heavy crunch-ing guitars, riffs, screams and thunderous drumbeats with beautiful melodies and emotionally driven vocals there’s a reason these guys have been stalwarts of the pop punk rock movement since before there was a movement.

London based Zico Chain are hard rock, pure and simple. 2012’s offering ‘A Devil in Your Heart’ is a veritable feast of chunky guitar swells and soaring melodies that you can’t help but join in with. If their performance at Download is anything to go by, you don’t wanna miss this tour - so let your hair down, get those fists pumping and get involved.

Crushingly heavy, darkly atmospheric, emotionally poignant, and never less than utterly enthralling, Devil Sold His Soul combine devastating force and haunting melody in a unique and involving blend that is as hypnotic as it is moving. Frankly, we can’t wait for the powerhouse tour combining DSHS with German deathcore band We Butter the Bread with Butter and the mighty Palm Reader.

Classic, classic, classic double bill

Shining the light for the UK rock scene

Sleazy, dirty rock n freeeaaaking ROLL!!!!

Traditional music with a contemporary twist

The poster boys for the pop rock revolution

Frankly you must not have been born on this planet if you’ve managed to completely miss Skid Row and Ugly Kid Joe for the last 20 years! A massive double headline show, this will be a BIG HIT show where you can sing along from start to finish. Grab the denim and prepare to sing every word to ‘Youth Gone Wild’ and ‘Every Thing About You’!

This is the year for the post-hardcore pop punk rock revolution and Mallory Knox are spearheading the movement. They blew us away at Takedown 2013 earlier this year and their star continues to rise. Accessible and upbeat tunes aplenty make up 2012’s smash hit album ‘Signals’ – you can’t help but bounce along and are humming the songs before you know you know them.

2013 saw the release of the heavy, dirty ‘Confessions’ album from LA rockers Buckcherry. A full on powerhouse of stadium sized rock their sound is raunchy and their lyrics raunchier with pounding guitars and hard hitting vocals. Music to get your rocks off to! Support comes from hard rock legends Hardcore Superstar!

With a massive 11 band members, Bellowhead founders John Spiers and Jon Boden sure have succeeded in their mission to find a bigger sound for English folk music. With an unprecedented mix of brass and strings they’re breaking the boundaries of tradition and the result is a collective sound which you can’t help but dance around to. Uplifting and smile inducing, don’t hold back – get involved!

Don Broco are goin from strength to strength at the moment with an appearance at Reading & Leeds last month and now a HUGE UK tour. Their combination of punchy guitar grooves and bloomin’ catchy lyrics are complimented by the fact these boys aren’t hard on the eyes. No energetic stage show is complete without crowd participation push up human pyramids (yes, really).

DEVON MUSIC | SEPTEMBER 2013

Introduce yourselves – who are you and what do you do in the band?I’m Tim and I play guitar and sing, Dan plays heavy lifting and bass while Adam Wherly plays drums with interpretative dance routines thrown in. Really! If you had to create a genre name for your music, what would it be?Crust Pop. Who or what gave you your first musical inspira-tion?I’ve been pretty excited by music my whole life. The earliest I can remember is probably dancing at home to my Mum’s old Motown records. I got given an old surf video called ‘On the Road with Spike’ when I was still really young which had an absolute beaut of a soundtrack including all kinds of great punk bands, and some other cool stuff like sublime and Frank Black. I used to write out the lyrics I could make out as if I was writing a song of my own. Imagine some eight year old kid writing about getting shot and smoking weed. If you could collaborate with any artist, living or dead, who would you choose?Win Butler or Isaac Brock. I used to have all Modest Mouse and Arcade Fire records on one playlist and leave it on shuffle for about two months at a time. What’s your favourite midnight snack?Reheated Chinese food. Something with tofu and kung po sauce. What’s playing on your Ipod/in your car stereo RIGHT NOW?The Sidekicks. They came over on tour with Hop Along and totally won me over. I’ve been trying to listening to something else ever since. What makes playing a hometown gig so special?Friends! Why should we come and check out your live show? It’s fun and something willdefinitely go wrong. ZAN LAWTHER

Fronted by ex-Crazy Arm bassist Tim Rowing-Parker, new Plymouth trio WOAHNOWS have opened the doors to their garage with the truly exciting debut EP ‘Foma’.

Sounding as Latterman as it does Sonic Youth, the handmade first release is furiously quiet, loud and insanely catchy; with a punk rock ethos and a full European tour happening in September, these lively ones are fresh on the trail.

Catch them soon and be prepared to be blown away.

Their new EP ‘The Joy Disorder’ will be out on 2nd September through Big Scary Monsters, backed up by a full European and UK tour.
