Nesbitt had five goals, six points and was plus-7 as the Gladiators went 2-0-0 last week, improving their overall record to 3-0-1.

Nesbitt tallied three goals, including two shorthanded, and added and an assist as part of a plus-5 effort in Friday’s 6-2 win over South Carolina. He added two more goals, including the game winner, in a 5-2 win over Florida on Saturday.

The 28-year-old is third in the ECHL with five goals and is tied for third with eight points.

Nesbitt has 230 points (83g, 147a) in 204 regular season games and 35 points (15g, 20a) in 43 Kelly Cup Playoff games with Gwinnett, Idaho and Toledo. He also has appeared in 123 American Hockey League games with Rockford, San Antonio and Manitoba scoring 59 points (27g, 32a).

He is the 19th player to play in Trenton and the NHL, and the third player to play for Trenton and New Jersey.

DEVILS CAPTURE SHOOTOUT WIN VS. GLADIATORSTrenton, NJ - T.J. Miller and Darcy Zajac each scored goals in regulation time, and Dave Caruso made 34 saves on 36 shots as the Trenton Devils defeated the Gwinnett Gladiators 3-2 in a shootout Thursday night at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton.

In the first period, the Devils and Gladiators traded chances and stood on equal footing until the period’s final 93 seconds, when first-year Gladiator Ryan Garbutt chipped in his third tally of the season by jamming a rebound past a sprawled-out Dave Caruso to give Gwinnett a 1-0 lead. But no sooner than the Gladiators had taken the lead had they given their advantage right back, when rookie Devils’ defenseman T.J. Miller answered Garbutt’s game-opening score by firing a shot from the left point past Gwinnett goaltender Billy Sauer to tie the game. Miller’s goal was the 6’4, 220-lb. Californian’s first-career professional goal. Rookie defenseman Jordon Southorn also recorded his first-career professional point on the play by being credited with the assist. The score remained deadlocked, 1-1, after 20 minutes of play.

Seemingly fueled by their late-period, game-tying marker, the Devils stormed out of the gate in the second, taking their first lead of the night, 2-1, on a goal by Darcy Zajac just 17 seconds into the period. The sequence which culminated with Zajac’s first goal as a Devil started innocently, with a save by Billy Sauer, and the puck ricocheting into the corner to the right of the 6-2, 185-lb. Rochester native goaltender. But second-year Devil Ryan Ginand caught Sauer and the Gwinnett defense off guard with a quick centering pass which Zajac, camped on top of the crease all by himself, made no mistake in redirecting into the lower right corner of the yawning 4×6 net to give Trenton its first lead of the evening.

Unable to find an equalizer in the second period, the Gladiators evened the score once more early in the third when Ryan Garbutt notched his second goal of the game at 2:45. After that, the teams exchanged volleys throughout the third period, with neither team, and neither goaltender,

willing to blink. The Devils had a golden opportunity to win the game when Danick Paquette and Derek Nesbitt took penalties at 17:03 and 17:15 respectively, but the Gladiators protected their goaltender and kept the game square by killing the 1:47 of two-man disadvantage and forcing the game into overtime.

After a scoreless five minutes of overtime, the teams entered a shootout. In the shooter-against-goaltender duels, Ryan Hayes and Darcy Zajac each beat Sauer with quick wrist shots, and when Dave Caruso was through stopping all four Gwinnett shooters that he faced, the Devils had an exciting 3-2 win to improve their season’s record to 2-3.

The Devils and Gladiators will do battle again on Friday night in the final game of their two-day, two-game series in Trenton. Opening faceoff is set for 7:00 p.m.

Darcy Zajac scored his first professional goal Thursday, and notched the winning shootout tally.

DEVILS IN SHOOTOUTS The Devils’ win via a shootout over the Gwinnett Gladiators on Thursday night was Trenton’s first shootout win since February 13, 2009, when Trevor Kell scored the shootout-winning-goal against Mitch O’Keefe of the Elmira Jackals at the First Arena in Elmira, NY. The Devils had played 101 consecutive games following their last shootout victory before the streak was snapped against the Gladiators on Oct. 28. The Devils did not have a shootout victory during the 2009-10 season. In the Devils latest shootout triumph, Ryan Hayes and Darcy Zajac found the back of the net for Trenton, and Dave Caruso stopped all four of the Gladiators’ attempts against him.

FIRST-TIMERS Trenton Devils’ defenseman T.J. Miller tallied his first professional goal in his fourth pro game when he blistered a slap shot from the left point past Gwinnett goaltender Billy Sauer on Thursday night. Miller’s defensive partner on the shift, Jordan Southorn, recorded the only assist on the goal, the former Buffalo-Sabre draft picks’ first-career point. When forward Darcy Zajac then scored the Devils’ next goal 17 seconds into the second period, it also marked his first-career professional goal. With these important milestones now behind three of Trenton’s more-promising young players, look for them to develop themselves as players even further over the next couple of weeks.

ON THE KILL Penalty killing has been ever-improving for the Devils through their first five games of the 2010-11 season as the team has been able to settle some early inconsistencies in this area over the last couple games. After yielding two goals on six shorthanded situations in the season opener against Reading, the Devils have tightened up and their streak includes eleven consecutive successful kills, including all three opportunities they gave the Gwinnett Gladiators on Thursday night. Asked about the play so far from his penalty killing unit, Head Coach Kevin Dean said, “PK was great, you can argue that we won last night because our penalty killing but that would be a bit of a stretch.” As a former player, Dean understands the importance of special teams during each game, saying, “If our penalty killing and our power play together is above 100% efficiency then we are going to win more games than we are going to lose.” In addition to improved shorthanded play, the Devils have also done very good job the past few games keeping their trips to the sin bin at a low rate and if they can continue minimizing the number of their opponents’ power play chances, then the Devils’ penalty killing unit will be positioned for further success, and the team will be primed to win many more games.

The Trenton Devils and Gwinnett Gladiators square off for the second time in as many nights as the Devils look for their second consecutive win on Friday evening in Trenton. After falling behind, 1-0, early in their game on Thursday night, the Devils rallied with goals by T.J. Miller and Darcy Zajac to take a 2-1 lead heading into the third period. But after Gwinnett’s Ryan Garbutt tied the game, 2-2, by notching his second marker of the contest at 2:45 of the third period, the teams remained in a dead heat through the final 17:15 of the third period and five minutes of four-against-four overtime. The game then entered a shootout where Ryan Hayes’ and Darcy Zajac’s attempts were successful, and where Dave Caruso stopped all four Gwinnett shooters that he faced to give the Devils their second win of the season, 3-2. The Devils and Gladiators face off again on Friday. With a victory, the Devils can get back to the .500 mark. Puck drop for Friday’s game is slated for 7:00 p.m.

First-year Devils’ forward, Matt Lombardi, joins Trenton following a four-year stint at Boston College. Lombardi’s 145-game career at BC came after making the team as a non-scholarship, walk-on freshman in 2006-07. Despite being recruited by schools such as Brown and Yale, Lombardi chose to follow in the footsteps of his father, and his older sister, Michelle, who both also previously skated for the Eagles. Lombardi made his professional debut with Trenton in the Devils’ 2010-11 season opener against Reading on Oct. 16.

Q: What was your favorite professional team growing up? Player? A: Colorado Avalanche, Joe Sakic.

Q: What are you being for Halloween this year?A: I don’t know, my roommate Ryan Hayes and I were thinking of doing something, but I’m not sure if we’re going to end up doing anything. We had some ideas, but the day just kind of snuck up on us before we could work anything out.

Q: What is your favorite Halloween candy?A: I don’t eat candy very often, especially when I’m trying to be in playing shape for hockey season, but if anything, I’d go with some kind of dark chocolate.

Q: If you could have a super-power, what would it be?A: The healing power of Wolverine. It’d definitely help out with the aches and pains during a long season.

Q: If there was a movie about your life, who would play you?A: I’m not sure. Probably Matt Damon. He’s another Boston-area guy, so yeah, why not him.

Q: If you could meet three people, alive or dead, who would they be?A: I’m an athlete, so I’ll stick with sports guys. How about Tom Brady, Roger Federer and Steve Yzerman.

LOMBARDI Q&A

On Oct. 27, the New Jersey Devils were at the HP Pavillion in San Jose taking on the Sharks, a game New Jersey would eventually lose by a score of 5-2. In an attempt to energize his teammates in a game that was fast slipping away, defenseman Matt Corrente dropped the gloves with San Jose’s Ryane Clowe in the second period. During the altercation, Corrente suffered a broken left hand and will be sidelined indefinitely. To fill Corrente’s roster spot in New Jersey, the Devils re-called defenseman Tyler Eckford from AHL Albany. With Eckford being recalled by New Jersey on Thursday, the door became opened for Trenton defenseman Dave Leaderer to make the jump from the ECHL to the AHL, as the third-year pro joined Albany for the first time this week.

Since making his debut with the Devils in 2008, Leaderer has been the epitome of durability and

consistency, playing in all 148 of Trenton’s games without missing a single contest, and registering a combined rating of plus-9. Before joining the Devils, Leaderer played four seasons at UMass-Amherst (HE), where he was also an ironman, playing in all 149 of his team’s games from 2004-2008. His 149 collegiate games played are an all-time record for total games played by any player in the history of Umass-Amherst’s hockey program. In total, Leaderer’s combined consecutive games streak stands at 297 over six-plus seasons as he joins Albany where he hopes to be a tower of strength, similar to how he was with in the ECHL and in college.

Leaderer joins Albany as the team travels to play the Boston Bruins’ affiliate, the Providence Bruins, at The Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence, RI Friday night.

DAN CHARLESTON BACK IN TRENTON The Albany Devils loaned Dan Charleston to Trenton Sunday. The Oak Forest, IL. native played 25 games for Trenton last season and had 33 points, scoring six goals and 27 assists with a plus-2 rating, including a four-point, two goal and two assist performance on Feb. 14 at Elmira. He did not appear in any contests for Albany this season.

Before joining the Devils organization, Charleston laced up the skates for the University of Nebraska-Omaha (CCHA), where in four seasons with the Mavericks, the 5’8, 180 lb. forward totaled 43 goals and 73 assists for 116 points in 159 games played, and was the team’s third leading scorer in 2007-08 when he accrued a career-high 37 points.

CHRIS POLI RETURNS WITH GLADIATORS Thursday night’s contest between the Devils and Gladiators will feature the return of former Devil, Chris Poli, to Trenton. First joining the Devils during the 2007-08 season immediately following his senior year at Brown University, the Medfield, MA native accumulated 49 pts (22g, 27a) and 54 penalty minutes over three seasons in Trenton. After a 55-game career in Trenton, the 6-1, 210 lb. forward was traded by the Devils to the Gladiators on September 2, 2010.
