■ Product Overview

■ Product and EnvironmentThe DeviceNet Option Card is an interface betweenthe DeviceNet serial communication bus and the VLTfrequency converter from Danfoss. The option cardwill function as an integrated part of the drive.

DeviceNet is a distributed control network. TheDeviceNet protocol is embedded in the controller optioncard and is a communication protocol conforming to theOpen DeviceNet Vendor Association (ODVA) standard.

The option card allows DeviceNet compatiblecontrollers, sensors, and network management toolsto control, monitor, and supervise the VLT frequencyconverter. The option is designed to the DeviceNetSystem Protocol for Vendors as a slave device.

■ Overall FunctionA DeviceNet compatible device has the ability toperform the following operations with the VLT frequencyconverter over the DeviceNet network:

1. Control speed references and send drivecontrol commands.

2. Monitor the status of the drive, access alarmand warning messages, and monitor driveand motor information.

3. Upload and download drive settings, configuredrives, and also perform the operationsdefined in 1 and 2.

Therefore, the level of control and flexibility of the VLTfrequency converter over the network depends onthe capabilities built into the controlling device.

The application program has the following functions:1. Support interger parameters through the

dual ported RAM.2. Manipulate the dual ported RAM parameters

to interface with the CAN.3. Monitor network activity "watchdog" function to

determine Master – Slave communication continuity.

■ NetworkThe VLT frequency converter will function as a slaveon the DeviceNet network. All addressing and linkingto nodes is done at installation time by a networkmanager tool. The network installer and the networkmanagement master have a significant influence onhow the node functions on the network. A DeviceNetnetwork can support up to 64 nodes.

■ User ProfileThe end-user is a network manager programmer ora controller who see the DeviceNet control card asa transparent bridge to the VLT frequency converter.Control and supervision of the VLT frequency converterwill still be possible through the standard parameter set.

■ Data Communication InterfaceNo direct data communication interface (e.g. via aserial port) other than the DeviceNet interface and theVLT frequency converter interface is considered.

■ Initialization of VLT frequency converter InterfaceThe VLT frequency converter interface is initialized inthree phases. The first two phases are initiated andcontrolled by the VLT which will write commands tothe option card through the dual port RAM.

Phase 1:Is the initialization of the communication system.During this phase the option card must respondcorrectly to the VLT frequency converter initializationcommand or else the VLT will not function anddisplay a "No Option Init" message.

Phase 2:Is the interface watchdog function performed bythe option card as the first operational action. Aftercompletion of this phase, data can be passed betweenthe VLT frequency converter and the option cardthrough the command channel in the dual port RAM.

Phase 3:The VLT frequency converter will write to the InitializationChannel of the dual port RAM which will set thedisplacement values of the various channels (ControlChannel, Status Channel, Command Channel 1,Command Channel 2, Command Channel 3, WarningChannel, and Spontan Channel), and the DeviceNetoption card software will read these displacementsand return a response to the VLT frequency converternotifying that the initialization was successful or anerror was obtained in the process.

During operation (after initialization) the dual port RAMinterface is supervised by a watch-dog in the VLTfrequency converter. The VLT frequency converter willbe kept "alive" by cyclic writing to a channel in the dualport RAM by the watch-dog handler of the option card.

■ Network Variable HandlingThe parameter access network variable is a structurecontaining parameter number, data, value, and afunction code containing a read or write command. The application program shall receive the data, validate the data, convert the data to the format ofthe VLT frequency converter, process the read orwrite of the parameter, then send the informationback in an output network variable of the samestructure. This output variable would contain theparameter number, error code information in the eventof an exception, and parameter value.

■ Error HandlingThe option card will stop sending a watchdog signalto the VLT frequency converter when:

1. The node has been disconnected from the network2. A network management tool has the

Option Card go Off-line3. A hardware fault on the DeviceNet Option Card

PCB prevents reliable operation

By withholding the watchdog message, the VLTfrequency converter can detect a "Bus Time-out"and enter secure, pre-defined state.

For recoverable errors such as [1] and [2] the optioncard shall re-send the watchdog message whenthe fault or condition has disappeared such as afterre-connection of the node to the network.

For unrecoverable errors such as [3] the applicationprogram shall permit logging of network errorswithout resetting or restarting the microprocessor. This will send information to a network managementtool that will allow appropriate actions to be taken. The only way to recover from a serious error is tore-initialize the VLT frequency converter DeviceNetoption card by cycling power.

In case of serious VLT frequency converter fault, theDeviceNet processor shall hold the CAN chip reset, thereby disabling any communication to the node untilthe VLT frequency converter has been re-initialized.

■ Overall FunctionDeviceNet is a low-level network that standardizescommunications between industrial devices (sensors, limit switches) and high level devices (controllers). The communication network can be peer to peer ormaster/slave. DeviceNet uses CAN technology forMedia Access Control and Physical Signaling and itsupports up to 64 nodes. DeviceNet also definesdevice profiles for devices belonging to specific classes. For other devices, a custom class must be defined inorder to make it DeviceNet compatible. This furtherenhances the interchangeability and interoperability ofthe network. Each node on the network has its ownunique media access control identifier (MAC ID) todistinguish it on the network. The MAC ID is storedin the header of the message which is split into fourdifferent message groups. However, DeviceNet onlymakes use of three message groups keeping the fourthone for future use. If two nodes attempt to get controlof the network bus simultaneously, the CAN protocol

resolves the issue by arbitration. A dominant bit (0)will win arbitration over a recessive bit (1).

For the VLT frequency converter, the option cardwill be slave node on the DeviceNet network. Theoption card will be a message server that will requestand set parameters in the VLT via a dual portedRAM interface. The option card has an embeddedCAN controller that will screen all network messageswith a Mask and Match register. This featureallows the option card to filter out any unwantedmessages from the network. The option card willreceive group 2 and group 3 messages. Group 2messages allows the option card to use the predefinedMaster/Slave connection set which identifies a usefor all group 2 message identifiers. The ability toreceive Group 3 messages allows the option card toalso be an Unconnected Explicit Message Manager(UCMM) with the UCMM request and responsemessage identifier. Explicit message connectionsare unconditionally point-to-point. Point-to-pointconnections exist between two devices only.

■ Cable Cross Section

■ Connection of the Cable ScreenThe screen of the DeviceNet cable must alwaysbe connected to ground at both ends, that meansthe screen must be connected to ground in allstations connected to the DeviceNet network. It isvery important to have a low impedance groundconnection of the screen, also at high frequencies. This can be obtained by connecting the surfaceof the screen to ground, for example by means ofa cable clamp or a conductive cable gland. VLTfrequency converter Series are provided with differentclamps and brackets to enable a proper groundconnection of the DeviceNet cable screen. Thescreen connection is shown in the drawing.

■ Earth ConnectionIt is important that all stations connected to theDeviceNet network are connected to the same earthpotential. The earth connection must have a low HF(high frequency) impedance. This can be achievedby connecting a large surface area of the cabinet toground, for example by mounting the VLT frequencyconverter on a conductive rear plate. Especiallywhen having long distances between the stations

in a DeviceNet network it can be necessary to useadditional potential equalizing cables, connecting theindividual stations to the same earth potential.

■ DeviceNet ConnectionIt is essential that the bus line be terminated properly.A mismatch of impedance may result in reflections onthe line that will corrupt data transmission.

The DeviceNet Option Card is provided with apluggable screw connector.

By using a pluggable screw connector as a splicebetween two trunk lines, removal of devices willnot sever the network. Strain relief, if required, must be provided by the developer. In currentinstallations of this type of connector, the strainrelief is attached to the product.

NOTEWires should not be installed while thenetwork is active. This will prevent problemssuch as shorting the network supply or

disrupting communications.

■ Understanding Module Configuration SwitchesThe DeviceNet Communication module’s DIPswitch settings determine:

• DeviceNet node address• DeviceNet baud rate

When you make changes to the switchsettings, use a pointed instrument suchas a ball point pen. DO NOT use a

pencil because damage may occur

Unpredictable operation may occur ifyou fail to check connections and DIPswitch settings for compatibility with your

application. Unpredictable operation may result indeath, personal injury, and equipment damage.

Hazard of injury or equipment damagemay occur due to unintended or incorrectmachine motion. When a system

is configured for the first time, the motor mustbe disconnected from the machine or processduring initial system testing.

NOTEWhen setting the Communication Module’saddressing Dip Switches, you must ensurethat each serial device on the network has a

unique address. Also, all devices connected to thenetwork must be set at the same baud rate.

■ EMC PrecautionsEMC precautions The following EMC precautions arerecommended to obtain interference free operation ofthe DeviceNet network. Additional information on EMCcan be found in the VLT 5000 Series Instruction Manual.

NOTERelevant national and local regulations, for example regarding protective earthconnection, must be observed

The DeviceNet communication cable must be keptaway from motor and brake resistor cables to avoid

coupling of high frequency noise from one cableto the other. Normally a distance of 8 inches (200mm) is sufficient, but it is generally recommendedto keep the greatest possible distance betweenthe cables, especially where cables are runningin parallel over long distances.

If the DeviceNet cable has to cross a motorand brake resistor cable they must cross eachother at an angle of 90°.

■ VLT Response TimeThe update time via the DeviceNet connectioncan be divided into two parts:

1. The communication time, which is the time ittakes to transmit data from the master to theslave (VLT with DeviceNet option).

2. The internal update time, which is the time it takesto transmit data between the VLT 5000 controlcard and the DeviceNet option card.

Communication time (tcom) depends on the actualtransmission speed (baudrate) and the type of master

in use. More data or lower transmission speedwill increase the communication time.

The internal update time (tint) depends on the type ofdata in question as there are different channels forthe data transfer where time critical data e.g. controlword has highest priority. The internal update time forthe different types of data are stated below.

■ General Purpose Discrete I/OThe General Purpose Discrete I/O device I/Oassemblies consist of:

• five predefined input assemblies with singlestatus bits

• one product–specific input assembly witha single status bit

• five predefine input assemblies with multiplestatus bits

• one product–specific input assembly withmultiple status bits

• five predefined output assemblies• one product–specific output assembly

■ I/O Assembly InstancesThe I/O Assembly Instance definitions in this sectiondefine the format of the "data" attribute (attribute 3)for I/O Assembly Instances. I/O Assemblies supporta hierarchy of motor control devices. The devicehierarchy includes motor starters, soft starters, ACand DC drives, and servo drives. Assembly Instancesare numbered within the hierarchy so that eachdevice type is assigned a range of Assembly Instance

numbers, with higher functionality devices supportinghigher instance numbers. Devices in the hierarchycan choose to support instance numbers that arelower than theirs in the hierarchy. For example an ACdrive may choose to support some I/O Assembliesin the starter profile to make it easier to interchangestarters and drives within the system.

■ Quick SetupFor how to program the ordinary VLT parametersrefer to the VLT 5000 Series Instruction Manual.Communication is established by setting thefollowing parameters:

Parameter 904:Select the PPO type to be applied.

Parameter 918:Readout of the actual address of the DeviceNetoption via dip switch.

Parameter 801:Readout the transmission speed in bit/sec. Thedefault setting is 125 kbaud, which means the VLTautomatically detects the transmission speed of theconnected bus. If you set a fixed value it must bethe same as that selected in the master.

■ Special AttentionSpecial attention must be given to the followingparameters described in the VLT 5000 SeriesInstruction Manual:

• 002:If operation site = Local, then control viaDeviceNet is not possible.

• 502-508:Selection of how to gate DeviceNet controlcommands with control commands on the digitalinputs of the control card.

• 512:Selects DeviceNet profile.

• 515-538:Data read out parameters that can be used to readvarious actual data from the VLT, as for example actualstatus on the analog and digital inputs of the controlcard thus using these as inputs to the master.

Value:125 kBaud (125 KBAUD) [20]250 kBaud (250 KBAUD) [21]500 kBaud (500 KBAUD) [22]

Function:This parameter displays the actual Baud rateof the devicenet option.

803 Time after bus error(BUS TIME OUT)

Value:1 - 99 sec ✭ 1 sec

804 Response after bus error

(TIME OUT FUNCT.)

Value:✭ Off (OFF) [0]

Freeze output frequency (FREEZE OUTPUT) [1]Stop with auto restart (STOP) [ 2]Output frequency = JOG frequency (JOGGING) [3]Output frequency = Max. freq. (MAX SPEED) [4]Stop with trip (STOP AND TRIP) [ 5]Control without DeviceNet( NO DEVICENET CONTROL) [6]Select set up 4 (SELECT SETUP 4) [ 7]

Function:The time out counter is triggered at the first receptionof a valid control word i.e. bit 10 = ok.1. CTW is not updated within the specified time2. Parameter 805 = "bit 10 = 0 ⇒ time out"

and bit 10 = "0"

The VLT remains in the timeout state until one ofthe following four conditions occurs:

1. Valid control word (Bit 10 = ok) is received and reset(Bus, terminals or local control panel) is activated(reset is only necessary when the time out functionStop w/trip is selected) ⇒ control via DeviceNetis resumed with the actual control word

2. Parameter 002 = Local ⇒ Local control vialocal control panel is enabled.

3. Parameter 928 = Disabled ⇒ Normal control viaterminals and RS485 is enabled.

4. Parameter 804 = Off ⇒ control via DeviceNetis resumed, with the control word usedlast being taken.

NOTEThe time out counter is reset and needs tobe triggered by a valid control word beforea new timeout can be activated

After the cause for the alarm hasbeen cleared, the master will have to acknowledge thealarm message for the VLT to start operating again. Awarning on the other hand may come when a warningcondition appears, and disappear when conditionsreturn to normal without interfering with the process.

■ WarningsAny warning within the VLT is represented by asingle bit within a warning word. A warning wordis always an action parameter. Bit status FALSE [0]means no warning, while bit status TRUE [1] meanswarning. To each bit and each bit status there is acorresponding text string. In addition to the warningword message the master will also be notified througha change of bit 7 in the Status Word.

■ AlarmsFollowing an Alarm message the VLT will enter Faultcondition. Only after the fault has been alleviated andthe master has acknowledged the alarm messageby setting bit 3 in the Control Word, can the VLTresume operation. Any warning within the VLT isrepresented by a single bit within a warning word.A warning word is always an action parameter. Bitstatus FALSE [0] means no fault, while bit statusTRUE [1] means fault. To each bit and each bitstatus there is a corresponding text string.
