Shape Task

Evaluation

What did you like about your image? The things that I like about the original image that I made was the way it ended up. This is my first attempt at making this kind of cartoon character, and even though it’s not as great as it should be, it doesn’t look as bad as I thought it would. The body and the head look very good and the slight blur that I used on the head to make it look separate from the body really brings the whole thing together. The detail that surrounds the nose area really makes the beaver a beaver, this is what distinguishes it from other parts of the body and makes it identifiable as a beaver.

What would you improve if you did it again? If I was to go back and do it again I’d definitely sort out the hands. The hands are the one thing I don’t enjoy about the original beaver cartoon, it makes it look a little less realistic. Even though they aren’t that bad they still let the whole thing down a little bit. The feet as well look a lot like flippers so I would go back and edit that so they look more like webbed toes. The background is also pretty bland, I added that just so that it wouldn’t be sat with a white background behind him. I’d add some shrubbery or maybe a dam to make the whole scene seem more realistic. The tail would also be a great thing to adjust, at the moment it just looks like a terrible shadow that’s sitting below him, I would go back and make sure the feet aren’t sitting above the tail and make it look a lot more realistic. There’s only so much realism you can bring to a cartoon beaver, but you do want some sort of child like humour added to it, primarily because they are the target audience.

Rotoscope

Evaluation

What did you like about your image? The only thing I really like about this section of my work is the second head that I did of Steve Carell. Unlike my first attempt he actually looks like what he should look like, with his facial features all in the right place and the hair came out look wonderful. It has some really detailed parts to it and the beard came out looking wonderful, the use of colour range helps you bring out the detail in the facial hair and beard.

What would you improve if you did it again?I’d definitely go back and rotoscope the bodies onto the actual heads, at the moment they just look like floating heads in the middle of a page. Also I’d go back and sort out the face of the first rotoscope I did of Craig Roberts (the image on the left) his neck looks a multi choice tub of chocolate ice cream. The shadow didn’t work out as well as I hoped it had. I really should have used more of the colour range tool when creating my Craig Roberts. The shading of the face got so bad that he actually came out looking more like a police sketch for a criminal on the run.

Text Based

Evaluation

What did you like about your image? The first part of making the text came out looking really good, with the skateboarding image fitting into the text made it look really nice. This part was simple as well and I understood how to do it straight away so it wasn’t too complicated. The second part where you put images over the top of it was also very easy, you are just selecting an image you would like to see on your text, resizing it so that it fits onto your piece of work. It also came very easy when I was making the text.

What would you improve if you did it again? On the other hand, even though I found the whole process simple and easy, I didn’t really take the second part of the text making seriously and I really should have done. I decided that I would just put toilet symbols on the text so I have of yet to make something that actually looks good. But there is always time for improvement on that one, also the second time round I do it I will actually make something that I like and it won’t just be a mess around with shapes.

Comic Book

Evaluation

What did you like about your image? My first image of Ryan Gosling in drive worked really well, the whole shadow on the window becoming more cartoon like makes it looks a lot nicer. The glow of the face is made more distinctive when you play around with the filter that goes on top of the image. The second image I did of Oliver Tate sat in the bathtub looks a lot more subtle than the other images that I created. The filter that I used makes it look like it’s had a slight adjustment but nothing major. I believe this makes it look better than the rest of them, I prefer this approach because even though it looks real you can see the subtle differences, it also fits in with the cartoon genre. The second image reminds me of the Walking Dead game, using the filter ‘cut out’ helps you create these types of images and make them look as abstract or a subtle as you would like. The last image I created was from a scene out of fight club, I wanted to keep this image in the middle of realism and over the top abstract cartoon, this is so you can keep some of the realism but also notice the cartoon like approach.

What would you improve if you did it again?I don’t really know what I would improve if I had to go back and do it again. It was a fairly simple task where you only really needed to adjust a few things on filters to make it more realistic or more abstract. I would say I’d like to go back and create a more abstract image, at the moment all of them seem very much the same so that’s one thing I’d go back and improve on.
