Shape Task

EvaluationWhat did you like about your image?I like how you are able to identify what the animal is as soon as you look at the image due to the basic colours and shape. I also like the eyes of the panda cartoon as I used the stroke tool to definition and the polygonal lasso tool to create a glint in the eye.

What would you improve if you did it again? If I did the project again I would use more shading to make the head, neck and body look more defined as they all look like one at the moment. I would create a more separate layers to make the panda look more detailed.

Shape task

Evaluation

What did you like about your image?I like how this image has more shading than the cartoon panda. I think the shape of the eyes is good and the slight fur effect works well. In order to make the image more eye catching, I used the difference in colours for the more realistic view on the animal.

What would you improve if you did it again?I think the general shape of the wolf could have been improved by warping the basic shapes and I could have added more fur by using the colour range tool on Photoshop. I could have used a wider range of colours and included smaller bits of detail which could have improved the image in general.

Rotoscope

Evaluation

What did you like about your image?I think the main thing I like about this rotoscope image is how I have created the eyes. I made each separate part of the eyes on different layers and coloured them all individually.

What would you improve if you did it again? If I did the same image again, I would add more shading and definition to the facial features especially around the nose.

Rotoscope

EvaluationWhat did you like about your image?I feel like I paid more attention to the smaller details within this image in this task, I think by doing this I have drastically improved the look of the image and feel like it looks much better than the animals I created during the shape task. By adding small bits of detail like the cupids bow between the nose and mouth and slight shading around the nose, I feel like the image has become a good example of rotoscoping.

What would you improve if you did it again? If I did this task again I would try to improve this such as the clothing and the hair as I feel like don’t look quite as good as I would like. Some parts of the hair, such as the curl which falls in front of his face, are a bit too jagged and should be slightly softer. I would have also considered the choice of colour for the neck as looking back on the image now, I feel it doesn’t fit very well with the colour of his face.

Text Based

Evaluation

What did you like about your image?I like the many different ways I am able to present the text, with the spacing, fonts and colouring.

What would you improve if you did it again?I would ensure I tried a wider variety of techniques. Then I would be certain I was able to apply these techniques in the future.

Comic Book

EvaluationWhat did you like about your image?I like the cartoon look of the images that would work well in a comic book. I find that the colours within the image look very exaggerated and unrealistic, this makes the photographs look even more cartoon-like. The most realistic of my images is the film Mean Girls as I only slightly changed the settings in the filter gallery on Photoshop. The most surreal image is the screen grab of Pineapple Express, I drastically changed the settings in the filter gallery and also changed the threshold settings to create more shadows and definition.

What would you improve if you did it again? If I did this task again I would make sure I had more variety within my images, I feel as though three of my images are rather similar in terms of what I have done when editing them. I would make one image have extreme adaptations to the original image and have one with even more subtle changes than the image of Mean Girls.I feel as though the image of World War Z would have looked good and worked well as an exaggerated cartoon image and therefore I would have edited this even more to create this look.

Illustration

Evaluation

What did you like about your image?I like the look of different kinds of drawings however my favourite kind is realistic drawings especially facial features. I like the way you are able to make drawings look like what you are thinking unlike with software on the computer where it is harder to do so.

What would you improve if you did it again?I would possibly draw something of a cartoon nature to show the type of thing that would feature in a children's book.

Initial Ideas

Mood board of inspiration - Characters

Characters:I chose a sketch drawing, a film representation and a cartoon version of Alice, The Hatter and The White Rabbit in order to create variety within my images. This part of the mood board gives me ideas about the shaping of the characters and the colours that should be included in my children's book.

Mood board of inspiration: Setting

Setting:Again as with the characters section of the mood board, I chose a variety of different versions of Alice in Wonderland to give me more ideas about what I want to create.I have taken most of my inspiration from the trees and ‘natural’ aspects of the scenery.

Mood board of inspiration: Text

Text:I chose these particular font as they all are serif font and therefore are easier for young children to read. I feel like most of the fonts I have picked fit with the magical theme of Alice in Wonderland and would look good in a children's book. None of these font are all capitalised which is what I wanted as children will often struggle with reading capital letters.

Proposal

Dimensions

I have decided, my children's book will be 10 x 10 inches and will have around 8-10 pages.

Story Overview

My idea is to have a reverse wonderland in which Alice takes the other characters back to the real world. As they have never experienced a world like this before, they act how Alice did when she first went to Wonderland and are confused by normal, everyday objects.

Export Format

PDF

Advantages: PDFs have the capability to compress large files which makes storing and transferring a file much easer.Disadvantages: PDFs can often be difficult to read on computer screens.

Deadline

20th March

Audience

My children's book will be aimed at 6-9 years olds as I believe 6 is the age the child will start appreciating books and wanting to read them for themselves. The images and text will be complex enough to slightly challenge them so they will be learning but wont be too difficult so its not out of their age range. The social class I will be targeting will be abc1 as their parents will be able to afford such items as books. I believe although the book will be gender neutral, young girls may enjoy it more due to the main character being female. The readers will most likely already know the story of Alice in Wonderland and recognise the characters and therefore want to read the book I will create.

Production Methods

Mainly, I will be using the rotoscope technique to create my characters and settings. I will possibly be taking photographs and rotoscoping over the image in order to create a the cartoon effect I am wanting for my children's book.I am not going to make my illustrations too intricate or over complicated as I want to keep my book rather simple but not incredibly simple as I want my audience to have an interest.
