I am going to design a training aid that willhelp and encourage you to keep youhydrated whilst exercising, such as a specialistwater bottle. Many statistics have shown thatpeople are not keeping themselves hydrated

When participating in physical activity. Thiswill be particularly aimed at young adults(ages 18-22yrs) who are not fully aware of

    consequences that dehydration can cause.

“Cold water is usually the best choice for the athleteexercising less than 60 minutes because it clears thestomach quickly. If exercising longer than 60 minutes, adiluted fruit juice or sports drink can be useful. Full strength

juices and juice drinks are not recommended immediatelybefore and during heavy workouts because they cancause fullness and cramping .” (chop.edu,2010)

    Observation Results

I am going to analyse people that opt the “active lifestyle”, to helpencourage regular hydration during exercise .

    Person

    object

    Time

    Situation

    Activity

Females tended to opt for the classesand not the gym

Most people brought hand/sweat towelsin with them

Most people choose to drink every 15mins

Many people had an athleticbuild/body type

People tended to use plain water bottlesnot specialist ones

Lots of males choose high intensity wwork opposed to low intensity activ

People would frequently take breaks, butnot hydrate

A lot of time was spent on setting upequipment

A very small amount of people woulddrink every 30 mins

Many people would stay for 30-40minsthen leave

The Idea behindthis design is thatevery bubble

indicates howmuch you shoulddrink every 15/30mins. It also has aice tube in thecentre to keepyour water coolwhilst training

This bottle has abottom section thatincludes LEDS and aself set timer. Thisallows the user to seta time of exercisethen the lights willflash through thebottle of water, indicating that they

    need to drink.

The idea of thisdesign is to reducethe need for coldwater machines inthe gym. The outsidetubing is filled withfreezing gel, whichthen keeps thewater cold for hoursonce it is placed inthe centre.

    This bottle has

a censoredmiddlesection. Thisflashesconstantlywhen the userhas gonebelow half.

Packing – Must have shock resistant packaging, so that it prevents anydamage to the product when transporting.• Manufacturing facility – My design will make use of an existing machinery in an

existing plant, so that no extra set up cost/training is needed.• Size – The bubble effect allows a large range of users to interact with it due to

    the small and large diameter.

PDS - Continued• Aesthetics – Material needs to be slightly transparent so that water level can be

seen. The rounded shape must be fluid and not contain bumps.• Materials – The main body must be made of a material that can be blow moulded

easily and the lid has to be made of a material that can be vacuum formedaccurately.

    • Product Life Span – 2/3 weeks maximum, this allows for any delays in materials orlabour. (11 weeks in the prototype production)

    • Ergonomics – To compete with other existing products my bottle can’t be any tallerthan 300mm and has to fit the average sized hand of an 18+ year old.

    • Shelf Life – The shelf life of this product must be more than 6 months to a year, dueto all the components properties.

    • Testing – The testing of this product will be done by customers and themanufacturing team.

    • Documentation – The instructions and embossed outer features will be made veryclear so that no confusion is possible.

    • Disposal - All materials chosen can be recycled and will be sent off to specialistfactories to be recycled.

    SWOT Analysis

Strengths: A good design supported by efficient sketches. Large variety ofmaterials available and helpful technicians.

Weaknesses: Not exact materials/machines available to make my prototypeas it would be made in industry. Difficult parts to be made with very small

    detail.

Opportunities: The overall design could be developed further to include arange of bottles making sport specific ones, or ones with several useful

    features.

Threats: The machinery needed, accuracy and the current market.

    Reverse engineering

During my reverse engineering task, I was mainly looking at how thewater bottle was made and looking in detail at the mouth piece tosee what features it included. When looking from the outside andthe bottom of the sports bottle, you could see a faint split line wherethe bottle had been made via a mould.

    Anthropometrics

When looking at anthropometrics for the hand, I had to look at several measurementsin order to design for the 5 th and 95 th percentile.

I took a particular close look at measurement “E” this was for the bubble aesthetics ofmy product. I wanted to allow a particularly good grip of the bottle as I found in

research that when sweaty hands occur, it’s hard to get a good grip of large bottles

Human FactorsUSER GOAL – To keep water stored in a container for easy access to regular hydration

when out and about, especially exercise.

My product is designed to use physical capabilities (Dexterity) such as precision grip andpower grip. Reach and stretch is also included in the process of picking the water bottle

up and putting it down. A small amount of visual characteristics are also included onthe exterior of my product they are to indicate the levels of water inside and basic

    information.

The power grip is used as the bottle is being picked up in either one hand or twodepending on the person and situation, The precision grip is to pull the top up so that

water can be accessed easily by tilting the bottle at angle when placing in theindividuals mouth. To improve the power grip I have developed my design in a way sothat texture helps with the power grip. Small silicone strips will be placed on the parts of

the bottle where it is most likely to be picked up.

The level of capability required is within my target markets range, any potential hazardshave been solved. The size/dimensions of the product itself have been changed and

altered many times, this is due to the models and testing that I have done with users. Thistesting has allowed me to make sure that the product is "fit for purpose".

    Environment

The physical environment in which my product is placed in means that it has morethan one external surrounding. These are atmospheric conditions, temperature andvibrations. For example, in the sporting environment there can be several different

surroundings each of which will have a different effect on the product.

The social environment plays a major role in my product, as from previous research Ifound that a lot of people compare sports equipment with others in the sporting

environment. For example, some people are in the gym for general fitness so

therefore may not need to buy or interact with my product.

Whereas people that are major athletes find it essential to have a good trainingbottle, which means that social interaction gives different views on the product.

    4. Fill bottle with water

    5. Screw lid back on

    6. Open the cap on top

    7. Tilt bottle up to drink

    8. Place back down, and push cap down to lock

Minimizing the number of tasks involved in my product is not possible due the currentsimplicity of the design. Each step is essential to the product working for the user, although some steps maybe done in a different order depending on the individualand how they may approach the product.

    Design and Emotion

    Physical (Physio-pleasure) Psychological (Psycho-pleasure)

My physical pleasure is mainly shown in theappearance of the product. When firstlooking, you can see the bubble effect givesthe athlete a choice of wider and smallersections to pick the bottle up from dependingon their hand size. The height and width makesthe product look sleek and easy to fit in sportsbags or lockers.

The psychological aspects of my productinclude both cognitive and physical demands. The measuring guide and information the bottexternal side means the athlete doesn’t have towork out how much they should drink savingthem time and frustration. The bubble effect isan influence of water droplets relating to whatthe product holds.

Final Research CalculationsHow much fluid is lost through sweating when exercising ?

“In a less hot climate, such as you might encounter when exercising at the gym,

the average person sweats between 0.8 to 1.4 liters (about 27.4 to 47.3 ounces)per hour during exercise ”

    • With this in mind, I want to allow users to drink the amount they are meant toevery 30mins but also give them more than they need due to loosing fluid

    through sweating.•

Each of the bubbles contain 121ml of fluid, 60ml of this is what an averagemale/female should drink every 30 mins. I then needed to account for fluid lossthrough sweating.

    • With these figures I then have worked out that an athlete is going to needdouble the amount of water when training than an average person of a dailybasis. This has been accounted for and allows the bottle to hold 2 hrs worth of

    drinking fluid.

Design For ManufactureThe lidThe lid is one of the major components in this product, it is made of polycarbonate plastic, due toits detailed insides and the cap functionality it is injection moulded.

The small cap feature that the mouth is placed around is made from Fluorosilicone (FSR) rubber. The process in which this is formed is extrusion blow moulding, due to the centre being hollow.

    The Main bottle body

The main body will be Extrusion blowmoulded due to the shape of the

body, but this is also the fastest wayto make it in industry especiallywhen mass producing them.

It will be made from HDPE is this is themost common material to use forwater bottles due to its properties.

    Design For Manufacture

The inner ice-tube/Block is a simple extrusion blow

mould which will then be filled with specialfreeing fluid and sealed.

This is so that the user can simply just keeprefreezing it once melted, instead of having to fillan ice tray with water every time.

    Inside parts – Ice tube

The ice block fixers that are inside thebottle are made from Fluorosilicone (FSR)rubber.

This a very dense rubber and so 3 discs willbe injection moulded and then slotted ineach of the located places.

    Design For Assembly

Cost of assemblyI designed my product to include very simple assemblies, this reduces mycosts and also makes it easier when manufacturing.

The main assembly is attaching the top rubber disc to the Inner ice tube, this means that users can simply pick up the disk and the ice tube will alsocome out.
