Overview• Developing Listening Skills is a three-book series with topically based listening pas-

sages to enhance listening abilities• The course is designed specifically for students at intermediate or higher levels of

English.

• Throughout the series, learners will progress from easy to more challenging exercises in order to facilitate listening comprehension

• The second edition of Developing Listening Skills expands with full color graphics, newly revised, topically based listening passages, and enhanced listening activities

• The unit themes are based on familiar themes to high school and university students

• Exercises in each unit follow a sequenced format that leads students from easier to more challeng-ing listening tasks

• All books are based on repeated listening prac-tice, meaning that students hear recorded con-versations twice. Typically, the first listening fo-cuses on global comprehension, while the second listening focuses on details or vocabulary

Student BookWarm-up:Students hear four dialogs related to the illustration or photograph. These dialogs focus on common expres-sions which students can use with regard to the unit’s topic

Warm-up:Students then complete a fill-in-the-blanks activity after listening to the passage for a second time

Warm-up:Students are then asked to write and orally practice sentences selected from the dialog above

Student BookListening Practice:Students listen to individual questions and statements and pair up commonly heard questions and answers. Students cooperatively create sentences before hearing a recorded description to check their answers

Listening Practice:Students then practice describing a pic-ture by creating their own sentences us-ing key words provided above the picture

Student BookSpeaking Practice:Students listen to individual ques-tions and statements in order to practice an intonation or pronunci-ation pattern. Pronunciation activi-ties focus on reduced speech forms and liaison between words, while intonation activities focus on com-mon stress patterns for short pas-sages

Speaking Practice:Students complete a numbering activ-ity along with a quick comprehension check by listening to a short dialog

Student BookShort Dialogs (1):For the first dialog, two activities are included in the unit. The firs time that students listen, they answer questions about the dialog. The second time , students follow along with the text of the dialog to complete a cloze exercise

Short Dialogs (2):For the second dialog, students listen and an-swer questions about the dialog

Short Dialogs (3):For the third dialog, students select the correct information from the dialog that they hear

Main Dialog:Students listen to two longer dialogs. The first listening asks students to answer questions based on the dia-log

Main Dialog:The follow-up listening asks stu-dents to complete a cloze exercise. After filling in the blanks in the dia-log. Students may use the script for speaking practice when paired with other students in the class

Student BookShort Talks (1):Students practice listening with three short speeches or talks. In the first part, students lis-ten and answer questions about the talk. The second time they listen, students follow along with the text of the talk and complete another cloze exercise

Short Talks (2):For the second talk, students listen and answer questions about the talk

Short Talks (3):For the third talk, students select the correct in-formation from the talk that they hear

Listening Quiz:The quizzes are based on two types of exercises. In the first exercise, stu-dents hear dialogs that they must match to a situation shown in a pic-ture

Listening Quiz:In the second exercise, students hear short dialogs with oral questions and choose the best answer to the ques-tions

Student BookWrap-up:The unit ends with a short dictation practice based on the unit’s main theme. This practice is designed to provide interesting insight into some aspect of the unit’s theme. In the first part, pre-listening questions accompany each dictation activity

Wrap-up:For the second section of dictation practice, there are listening comprehension questions to check students comprehension of the material

Wrap-up:Finally, the pre-listening discussion and listening comprehension questions guides students to complete the dictation practice in an overall sum-mary of the unit’s main theme

Student Book

Listening Test:Test preparation is a key concern of many students. Therefore each unit includes a practice test modeled after TOEIC exercises. These practice tests primarily follow the unit’s theme, so stu-dents can gain further exposure to vocabulary and expressions related to the unit’s main theme

Transcripts & Answer Key

The transcripts and answer key provides both teachers and stu-dents with additional features to use in class or at home. Teacher’s can use the transcripts to introduce additional lan-guage-learning skills such as reading, speaking, and writing, while students can use these materials for additional compre-hension and retention of knowl-edge

Tracking progressMonitor learner’s progress with the Teacher’s Report. Metrics on student performance are provided in a clear and simple way. It’s easy to register and submit answers.
