Why plan data management? The 5 Ps...
Perfect Planning Prevents Poor Performance
Why plan?
Data management is a journey with multiple drivers /stakeholders, from researchers to funders to support staff to curators to long-term data centres: each has to follow the same map in order to mitigate the risk of not getting there.

What can a plan not do?
It can’t do the work for you.
The map is not the territory (Korzybski) or Chalk’s no shears (Scottish saying)
It is important to remember that the human challenges in data management are often more difficult to meet than the technological ones. Communication is vital.
The limits of planning
… because good research needs good data
IASSIST 2011 Workshop, Vancouver, Canada, 31 May 2011
We conducted an analysis of the major UK research funders’ data-related policies (Jones, 2009)...
Major findings: • Not all funders have data policies • Some have different policies for different programs • Requirements are expressed in different ways • In a word, they’re diverse...

(N.B. Sarah will cover this in more detail in the next session...)

We pulled together a list of all the UK funders’ requirements, gathered them into thematic groups, and supplemented this list with our own expertise... (Donnelly & Jones, 2009)
Checklist for a Data Management Plan
This became the first ‘Data Management Plan Content Checklist’ (Checklist v1.0’) – it had 51 questions/headings. (Post-consultation, v2.0 had 115 questions/headings.)

Changes to the DCC Checklist...
1. More questions 2. Atomic questions 3. Closed questions 4. More active/direct language 5. Broadened thematic coverage
We are always interested in feedback on this – it’s a work in permanent beta, reacting to changes in the game...
How the Checklist developed
… because good research needs good data
IASSIST 2011 Workshop, Vancouver, Canada, 31 May 2011
We mapped our Checklist questions to each funder’s data-related requirements, and determined three key stages...

The Checklist v3.0 (Donnelly & Jones) is the underlying intellectual framework which supports all of the DCC’s data management planning work.
It is arranged into 10 sections, and aims to be comprehensive and generic.
The Checklist, Section by Section
The next few slides provide an overview of these sections, with a little commentary from me on who might be involved in filling this in.
