Task

Dow Chemicals needed a solution for voltage monitoring at an electrochemical plant. Initially the company had been looking for a ready-made system. However, the systems offered on the market weren’t suitable due to the high electromagnetic impact on the production plant.

Project process

Dow Chemicals presented its problem and taskit imme-diately recognized that a distributed system based on a radio network could prove a beneficial solution within the problematic electromagnetic environment. An unconven-tional, low-cost prototype design convinced the client of the feasibility of this approach. After this initial stage, taskit refined the basic concept in collaboration with the client and laid down the system requirements in a functional specification document. Then taskit carried out the in-house development and conducted a number of on-site tests. Apart from the necessary hardware components, taskit also created the complete software package for visualizing, storing, alerting and analyzing the accruing data—all from a single source.

Solution

The client now has a fully functional measuring system. The voltages of the individual units are measured in the production plant and transmitted by radio to a communi-cation processor. This processor allows for data enquiry from the client’s measuring station, located at a signifi-cant distance from the plant itself.Thanks to the taskit software, the client now always has a full overview of the status of each individual produc-tion unit. This makes it possible to recognize instances of material fatigue at an early stage and to make the necessary replacements in the context of the next regular maintenance. Dow Chemicals is currently using the system in three locations worldwide, with great success. By introducing this system, the client has significantly reduced costly production stoppages due to material damages.

Task

A global service provider had been using their own development, based on taskit’s DOS mini PC,for serving meals in small and medium-sized organizations. When one of the peripheral devices was no longer available on the market, the company started looking for a new solution. The new system would need to be integrated into the existing enterprise resource planning system. It would also need to meet the future requirements of small and medium-sized organizations which did not have their own cafeteria.

Project process

No ready-made solutions could be found on the market. After consulting with taskit, the cornerstones of a new development were laid down. Not only did the new system need to be compatible with its predecessor, it also needed to offer new features such as a graphic display and a larger range of payment and invoicing modalities.

Solution

taskit took over the complete development of the solution, all the way from the hardware, display unit and software to operation and system updating. taskit was also able to deliver an enclosure solution: Together with a longstanding partner, a custom-made enclosure design could be created to meet the client’s specific needs. The development was concluded with successful testingcarried out at an organization in Berlin. Now this global service provider is in possession of a complete system which the company successfully uses throughout Germany.

Task

Dow Chemicals was looking for a pH measurement solution for its chlorine production—a highly reactive and toxic environment posing a considerable challenge. Because the relevant containers are difficult to access and are located in an electromagnetic environment—triggered by a process stream of 25,000 amperes—the requirements regarding electronics, mechanics and measuring technology are extremely demanding.

Project process

No ready-made solutions were available. After discussing the subject with taskit, Dow Chemicals commissioned taskit with the construction of a prototype. The sensor electrode had to be installed separately in order to avoid any health hazards for the user of the measuring unit. It was also important to be able to carry out the querying of measuring results from a safe distance. The prototype developed by taskit was tested with success and proved robust. Dow Chemicals has subsequently ordered 10 additional units which are all currently used in the context of ongoing operations. Dow Chemicals also broke new ground in terms of data collection: Instead of a new devel-opment, iOS-based mobile devices were used in conjunc-tion with a special app developed by taskit for sensor data collection and system processing.

Solution

To meet the relevant requirements, the pH sensor was installed without additional wiring. The data transmission was implemented via Bluetooth Low Energy. The electron-ics enclosure was cast especially to meet the liquid-tight requirements. The measuring process is triggered through a sensing device which is protected through galvanic isolation. The low energy consumption of Bluetooth Low Energy guarantees a long service life of the sensor unit with minimal maintenance requirements. Based on the client’s requirements, taskit was able to create a modern, cost-efficient solution. The system has since been used in various plants. The separation of the sensor and the mobile device—such as an iPod or iPhone used as the display unit—offers maximum flexibility.

Task

Although technically suitable swarm research robots were available on the market, the existing solutions were not satisfactory enough for the scientists at TU Berlin. Resources regarding storage capacities and the computing power of the built-in microcontrollers were only able to implement simple experimental set-ups. In addition, the researchers had specific ideas and requirements in terms of sensor technology, and these were not covered by the existing technology.

Project process

The Chair of Communication and Operating Systems at the university was already in contact with taskit thanks to previous joint projects. Therefore, when it came to discussing their existing challenges regarding swarm research robots, it was a matter of course for this client to have an informal development exchange with taskit. After providing a short overview of the costs for such a circuit board, it turned out that the “ideal robot” could be created at a low initial cost and at the price of a commer-cially available standard device.

Solution

Based on the wishes of TU Berlin, taskit developed a mobile robot circuit board with comprehensive sensor technology including ultrasound, lightness and temperature. Both engine control and sensor data query are executed by a microcontroller directly installed on the robot circuit board. In addition, an in-house developed Linux-based embedded ARM computer was attached: This is used for communication, complex control and analysis-related tasks and has enabled the researchers, for example, to use a camera in a field test.

Task

Achilles™ is a user-friendly medical information system by Swiss software developer Axonlab. It archives, links and processes a wide variety of data types collected at medical practices and pro-vides the data to the user in a clear and practical fashion. Data sources can be, for example, medi-cal instruments equipped with serial interfaces for external communication. The problem was this: How could data from up to five expected clients with a RS232 connection be made available, in the most practical manner, via a local network for Achilles™ application?

Project process

Axonlab began searching for a suitable platform which needed to be both small and practical. They found a taskit standard product which met all the basic requirements: the NanaosG20. With its complete Linux system, the NanaosG20 offered all the required features for con-trolling and connecting to the customers’ programs. Some minor features of the device had to be adapted from the standard version: The power supply of the NanosG20 requires a micro USB connector. It was important for this connector not to come loose under any circumstances throughout day-to-day practice. Furthermore, the po-tential for connectors to become mixed up needed to be avoided at all costs.

Solution

By means of a slight modification, a screw connection was able to meet these requirements. To fulfill the specifica-tions, the mini mainboard was given an expansion board which, thanks to signal converters, offers a total of six serial RS232 interfaces—and thereby an additional spare connection. The individual modules are precisely assem-bled to perfectly fit into an anodized aluminum enclosure with handy dimensions. It is a specially designed model with additional “in”- and “out”-marked connections for RS232, USB (host and device) and Ethernet, as well as an abrasion-resistant client logo.

Task

The manufacturer was seeking reliable partners for the development of an innovative product: a mobile cable fault locating system. The manufacturer wished to focus on its own area of expertise and collaborate with external providers for all other development areas. The development of the display unit was also to be outsourced.

Project process

The manufacturer drafted a detailed requirement spec-ifications document which was used as the basis for a Germany-wide call for tender. The development’s focus was on the module’s low power consumption and good readability, even in sunlight. The interference immunity needs were immense due to the high current pulses of the measuring technology. taskit was also invited to bid and made an offer. Eventually, thanks to its experience and expertise, taskit prevailed and was awarded the contract.

Solution

In collaboration with the manufacturer, taskit created a functional specification document for the development of both the hardware and the software. taskit developed the hardware, software and user interface in compliance with this specification. taskit used a standard product to guarantee long-term availability. The operational proto-types underwent field tests and intensive vibration tests, as well as EMV examinations. taskit also collaborated with the client to create a shield protecting the circuit board from interference. After minor adjustments, the device went into serial production.
