WORDS YOU SHOULD KNOW
Ethics The values and beliefs of a group of individuals
A code of ethics helps individuals conduct themselves appropriately by defining what is right and wrong behavior in a profession
A code of ethics helps individuals cope with temptations that may arise in their jobs. A code of ethics may also help individuals from abusing their positions of authority
EXAMPLE: Doing what is right instead of what is the fastest or
quickest way to accomplish something or wanting to “rock the boat”.
Assignment Sheet #1Ethical Conduct
Read the following scenarios and describe what you believe the individual(s) did ethically or unethically and why.
1. Sarah, a five-year-old, frequently has behavioral problems. After a particularly tiring morning, Justine, a child care teacher, yells at Sarah calling her “a brat”.
2. Jackie, a master teacher, suspects that Annie, a three-year-old, is being physically abused. Jackie reports her suspicions to the director. They notify the appropriate authorities.
3. Mario, a four-year-old, recently immigrated to the United States with his parents. The teachers at the child care center he attends understand he is not fluent in English and work with him. They also encourage Mario to talk about his family’s heritage.
4. Susan, a child care teacher, asks Cindy, a master teacher, if she can borrow two books to help her prepare activities, Cindy refuses saying “she might need the later.”
5. Kayla, a master teacher, has noticed marked behavioral changes in William, a five-year-old; Kayla schedules a conference with his parents. By meeting with his parents Kayla hopes to be able to better understand what may be causing the behavior problems.
6. Brittany, master teacher, is talking with a parent on the playground. The parent mentions that her neighbor’s child, Jacob, appears to be especially smart for his age. She asks Brittany what she thinks of Jacob.
Assignment Sheet #2Maintaining Personal Wellness
Read the following scenarios and describe what the individual is doing appropriately or inappropriately regarding wellness management.
1. Sylvia, a master teacher, is very busy at work but makes a point to go to an evening aerobics class at least three times a week.
2. Joseph, a master teacher, is very busy at work since the director has had to be out a lot recently. When Joseph is asked to volunteer for a youth program in his community, he reluctantly agrees. Joseph is dreading the extra time it will take.
3. Julie, the director of a large child care center, schedules enough staff so that teachers are able to take a short break in the morning and in the afternoon. Julie encourages teachers to take at least two short breaks a day.
4. Nita enjoys acting and being involved in theater. She has joined the local community theater and has a part in an upcoming production.
5. Toni, a master teacher, does not like to make schedules for herself. She often puts things off until later and then spends a lot of time trying to get reorganized and caught up on her responsibilities.
6. Shauna attends monthly meetings of a professional organization and has the chance to talk and network with other professionals.
