Having a Growth Mindset

What does a Growth Mindset look like?

Intelligence is a flexible quality that can be developed

With the right mindset and application everybody can do better and improve

Your brain / intelligence is like a muscle- the more you use it, the stronger it

gets

A Growth Mindset is a belief that:

- Intelligence can be developed

- Challenges are to be embraced

- There is no failure, only feedback

- The success of others should inspire you

- Perseverance is a key to success

- Effort leads to mastery

Independent learning

Independent learning is when you think, act and pursue your studies on your

own, without the same level of support you receive from a teacher at school.

As High Attaining students, you all have the ability to do well. However, to

achieve your best you need to be active learners.

To become a good active, independent learner you need to be:

- Resilient, to overcome challenges

- An excellent time manager

- Motivated! If you are not motivated, you are limiting your ability to do well.

Now is the time to be practicing note taking, research skills, essay writing,

mindmaps and other skills that you will use at GCSE.

Now is the time to be asking questions and enquiring.

If you need help- ask for it!

Perseverance and effort

Persevere: To persist steadfastly in pursuit of an undertaking, task, journey, or

goal, even if hindered by distraction, difficulty, obstacles, or discouragement.

Effort ignites ability into accomplishment

Your best effort will give you your best results

No matter how many mistakes you make or how slow your progress, you are

still way ahead of everyone who isn’t trying

Why KS3?

The main purpose of KS3 is to provide you with the skills ability to take on GCSE

work.

Y7 and 8 are the key to the rest of your time at high school- if you master these

and take everything away from them that you should, you will be able to

embrace the challenges of GCSE. Get it wrong, and KS4 will be more difficult.

During Y7 and 8, you need to be developing your independent learning and

research skills.

When is an obstacle really a challenge?

Most of life’s problems can be viewed in one of two ways:

- An obstacle – something stopping you doing or being what you want

- A challenge – something to be overcome so that you can have or be what

you want

The choice is yours – you can decide if it will stop you or challenge you

Embrace challenge!

Overcoming challenge with creativity

The purpose of school is to set young people up for life. Exams are just one way

of doing this, as they provide you with the qualifications to get where you want

to in the future.

The primary aim of school is to give you the opportunity to FAIL in a controlled

environment, so as you then can practice being creative in order to not then

not fail. These skills of resilience and creative problem solving are essential in

further education, in a job and in life.

Feedback

Replace the word ‘fail’ with the word ‘learn’

If you fail find out why (feedback from others or self reflection) and learn –

build on your mistakes and do better next time

Every time you fail and learn it is a step on the stairway to success

Be creative and think

outside the box

Inspiration

If they can do it so can you!

You can learn from what they have done

- What have they done that works?

- What could they have done better?

Being around success motivate you to be successful

Envy is a wasteful, negative emotion

- You are wasting your time and energy instead of creating and seizing

opportunities
