Dear DEUTZ LIVE readers, there is noquestion that we are experiencing the mostdifficult economic situation of the past few

decades. The global financial and economic crisishas been taking its toll on Germany since 2008. Ithas lead to an exceptional economic situation thatwas not foreseeable. DEUTZ has also been hit hardby the crisis. But we are seeing it as a challengeand using the ever and fast changing market situa-tion to our advantage. Even though the prognosis isstill not completely on the up side, it is time to getback to a time of careful optimism, because cur-rently, there seem to be the first feeble signs ofrecovery. The VDMA has announced that we havealready hit the bottom of the recession and the IMFis expecting a slight up-turn for 2010, as recentlypublished in its World Economic Outlook.

Here in Germany, first signs are showing that eco-nomic stabilisation is underway. Sales and turnoverwere about 14% below comparable figures for thesecond quarter due to the main holiday seasonmonths of July and August, but demand for DEUTZengines and services has risen in the third quarterof 2009 despite a prolonged difficult economic set-

ting. With orders totalling 206 million Euros, it is animprovement of around 3% from 2009's secondquarter. One positive factor in outcomes for the thirdquarter has been the MOVE Programme, which waskicked off at the end of last year. Thus we havebeen able to reach outcome improvements totalling30 million Euros this quarter and raise MOVE’s con-tribution to a total of 103 million Euros. That meansour goal to save 130 million Euros by the end of theyear has once again become realistic. By imple-menting our savings measures, we expect to see asustainable decrease in our overheads and thus avisibly lower break-even point. But we have had tointroduce many new measures within the last 12months. Measures to reduce costs, raise productiv-ity and produce more neatly structured organisationstructures have been implemented.

Dear DEUTZ LIVE readers, it is clear we must notclose our eyes to the total effects the economic cri-sis has had and will have. Small steps towardsrecovery do not mean that the market is going toskyrocket. For the year 2009 we are expecting astable business performance that will be a total of50% less than the previous year.

Although future economic development appearsuncertain, we are remaining slightly optimistic. Thisoptimism is necessary to go on and be innovative,to secure business tradition and to invest in thefuture. We have proven we can look to the futurewith the development of our Tier IV engines. Theagricultural machinery manufacturer Fendt, whohas been our partner for 60 years, will be present-ing the first tractor built with Tier IV interim AdBlueengine technology this year at the Agritechnica. Weenable our customers to achieve tomorrow's stan-dards today. Proof of the dependability, perform-ance and competence of our engines lies, amongothers, in operation reports. Whether we are in thelead in Formula One by constructing one of theworld’s largest circuits or offering the annual15.000 passengers optimal energy supply on theirnostalgic journeys on the Orient Express DEUTZ isa trusted name. Let DEUTZ inspire you. I hope youenjoy reading this edition of our customer magazine.

Long life and high performance

High-performance generators are the foundation forjobs that require a long and continual power supply,e.g. when providing lighting for construction sites andin cranes and conveyor belts. Powered by heavy dutyDEUTZ engines, generators manufactured by WackerNeuson allow a smooth and stable power supply atlow sound. Fully integrated, large volume fuel tanksgive DEUTZ engines long operation times. Thatmeans that both the G 66 and the G 78 can be runfor approximately 24 hours at continuous, full powerwattage (47 kW, and 59.4 kW respectively). Thesmaller models G 22, G 32 and G 43 can reach a con-tinuous power wattage ranging from 16.6 kW to 33kW and can be run from 8 to 15 hours.

It was a magnificent project, planned by the DEUTZ Choir Cologne, event organisers andassistants. “Symphonie der Tausend”, the 8th symphony by Gustav Mahler was the cen-tre piece of the choir's annual concert. It wasn’t quite 1,000, but at least 500 peoplewho worked together to realise this giant project. The Philharmonic Choir Cologne,Gürzenich Choir Cologne, Choir of the Cologne Cathedral and the Collegium CantandiBonn played right alongside the DEUTZ Choir Cologne, directed by Heinz Walter Florin. The orchestra was in the best of hands with the Symphony Orchestra Wuppertal.Soloists were Sylvia Greenberg, Janice Dixon, Brigitte Pinter, Susanne Frank, Lisa Tjalve,César Gutièrrez, Johannes Beck and Winfried Staber. A lively and well-researched intro-duction to the piece was given by Winfried Fechner from WDR’s Rundfunkorchester.

“Veni creator spiritus…”the audience was mes-merised from the verybeginning. Due to itsmany forms and musicalcharacters, this excep-tional piece was a greatchallenge for choirs, orchestras and soloists.Directed by Heinz WalterFlorin, everyone wasable to live up to themusical challenge andgave a stupendous con-cert. The “chorus mysti-cus” ended with a longsilence in the philhar-monic theatre and wasbroken by a thunder ofapplause. The audienceapplauded the ar tistswith standing ovations.

Tours of the Technology Centreshowed many visitors the birth place ofNicolaus August Otto's “mechanisation ofthe world”, dating back 140 years. Produc-tion facility tours gave the visitors an upclose and personal look at where theengines are manufactured and just howlarge the DEUTZ AG’s production portfoliois today. There was high demand for thetours where the visitors studied each sta-tion carefully and then awed the finishedproduct in the end. Due to the highdemand, more tours had to be organised atthe last minute. To sum it up, the first“Night of Technology” was a real hit forengineers and laymen alike.

Getting ahead with DEUTZ

Visitors really have something to look forwardto at this year's Agritechnica. Fendt will bepresenting its new high capacity tractor: the

800 Vario. It is the first tractor to incorporate theTier4interim AdBlue engine technology made byDEUTZ. With the most modern of engine technology, the highly mobile Vario is an all-round talent in agri-culture. It can easily be used on the fields or totransport loads; it is excellent for ploughing or incombination with other tools and is also impressive-ly manoeuvrable. The 800 Vario is also ideal intransport, with its maximum speed of 60 km/h thatis reached at an energy-saving 1,700 rpm. It is alsoa great help in crop care and fertilisation. TheDEUTZ 6-cylinder engine TCD 2012 is the tractor’sstrong diesel heart and makes for uncompromisingefficiency and maximum performance. The 6-cylin-der water-cooled inline engine has been perfectlyadapted to the Fendt Vario gear box. With a nominalspeed of 2,100 rpm at 203 kW, this robust enginehas an extremely high performance density. The6.06 litre engine employs DEUTZ Common Rail

A new generation of engines will be used in agriculture.

The agriculture machinery manufacturer Fendt will be

calling on DEUTZ for its successful 800 Vario Series.

At the Agritechnica 2009, Fendt will be presenting the

first tractor with a DEUTZ Tier IV interim engine, which

is the first to use AdBlue engine technology on the

market and has already been able to meet level 3b of

exhaust gas standards.

(DCR) high-pressure injection with an injection pres-sure of up to 2000 bar; the two high-pressure injec-tion pumps are integrated into the crankcase. Theseensure high performance at a low sound volume. The engine additionally rests on rubber mountingsfor vibration decoupling, which helps minimisenoise; the exact pre and main injection also guaran-tees clean and efficient combustion. Cooling chan-nel pistons help reduce piston temperatures andincrease stability.

Complies to Tier IV interim already thanks tonew SCR engine technology

The quality of agricultural tractors is based onexhaust emissions legislation for “off highway vehi-cles” according to engine performance By combin-ing Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technolo-gies, the Common Rail Injection Technology (DCR)has been able to observe level 3B Tier IV emissionlimits as early as 2 years before it became officiallegislation. The selective catalytic reduction reducesnitric oxide emissions using ammonia in the form ofthe 32.5% water-urea solution AdBlue. The ureasolution is sprayed into the emission stream beforethe emission catalyser. This causes the passivetransformation of ammonia (NH3) which reacts withNOX and oxygen to form nitrogen and water. Advan-tages of the SCR technology: The separation of theengine adjustments of emission after treatmentallows the engine to be set to 100% consumptionoptimisation. There is no negative effect on combus-tion because the emission after treatment withAdBlue takes place afterward. This means the 800Vario can aim for a further reduction in fuel con-sumption of 5%, which guarantees low operationcosts at low consumption levels. The SCR System isintegrated into the tractor concept. That means thisone product incorporates all components. DEUTZsix-cylinder engines are further supported by the

most current 4-valve technology. Two inlet and twooutlet valves per cylinder guarantee optimal cylindercharge and quick gas cycle. In short, this is a veryhigh-powered vehicle with optimal overall cost effec-tiveness.

60 years of teamwork

DEUTZ and Fendt both have a long history of suc-cess. Over 60 years ago, in the year 1949, the twocompanies cooperated for the first time in theDieselross F15. Equipped with a KHD 1KD415, theDieselross became the pioneer of power, depend-ability and performance in agriculture. Attributesthat have remained today, 60 years later.

Hybrid-powered

Mobile with hybrid

DEUTZ was the first manufacturer to present in cooperation with its project partners Linde and Atlas

Weyhausen mobile equipment using hybrid technology in its wheel loader AR65 at Bauma 2007. This

kind of technology has been further developed and applied to the Model AR 60, which will be presented

this year at the Intermat. So? Is the future calling for hybrid?

Innovation

Atlas Weyhausen's AR 60 is on the right trackfor series production. The Atlas AR 60deploys the DEUTZ 36.9 kW, 4 cylinder diesel

engine TCD 2009, which has a maximum rpm-1 of2100. The e-machine’s nominal engine power is 15kW at a torque of 100 Nm; at a torque of 200 Nm,it has the maximum performance of 30 kW. Thehybrid machine uses a so-called “mild” hybrid sys-tem. The e-machine’s rotor replaces the dieselengine’s flywheel, the e-machine’s stator is builtinto the flywheel housing. Adjustment of the drivepump is made using an electronic control system. This construction allows the diesel engine to runwith optimal fuel parameters, which means between10 and 20% of fuel can be saved. The hybrid systemconsists of one combustion engine and propulsioncomponents, such as gearbox, axles and hydraulics.DEUZT AG makes all important components used inthe mild hybrid system: Performance converter unit, high power traction battery and system control unitincluding user-specific software. The following func-tions are relevant for the customer: ■ Start and Stop: Engine is turned off in long idling

phases; delayed start of the integrated e-machine during performance

■ Power Boost: The e-machine is activated duringhigh performance and power from the battery isaccessed

■ Recuperation: The e-machine helps in breakingand stores recaptured energy in the battery

■ Down-Sizing: The hybrid system has very high capacities; diesel engines with lower capacitiescan also be used

Depending on usage, the combined use of a com-bustion engine and an electric machine significantlyreduces energy consumption. The power that isadditionally generated by the electric engine makesdown-sizing possible (size reductions of the dieselengine's dimensions), without the engine having toreduce its performance. This creates less exhaustfor the emission after treatment; it allows theengine to be operated in the best possible con-sumption range; this and the switch-off in idle phas-es helps save up to 20% of fuel consumption. It theengine can be reduced to below 37 kW, and themissing max. performance is compensated by thehybrid system, then starting in 2013, particulate fil-ters and SCR systems will no longer be required inEurope. Performance below 56 kW will require a par-ticulate filter, but not a SCR system in Europe andthe USA from 2014.

Hybrid power from DEUTZ is proving to be verydiverse, being that the market consists of differentcustomers with different demands, and it mustadapted for DEUTZ's many different engine series. The machine interface should not be modified, thusrequiring integration into the existing drive chainwithout interfering with the installation space avail-able. The diesel engine activates the hydraulicpump, there is no decoupler or gearbox. Hybrid driveis intended for use with high maximum performanceP

levels, but low mid-range performance. For examplewith wheel tractors, forklifts, aircraft tractors, dig-gers and telehoist load luggers.

Moreover, hybrid power increases performance dueto improved system dynamics during accelerationand braking. All of these advantages mean that hybrid tech-nology should not be restricted to use in cars in the future. ■

Hybrid engines consist of a combination of electric and combustion engines. The elec-tric motor plays two roles. During breaking it works as a generator and stores theenergy that is otherwise lost as heat. It also supports the combustion engine at cer-tain operating points, e.g. during acceleration and gathering high speed. Hybrid driveoptimises the system when used with suitable applications, which reduces CO2 andfuel consumption. Hybrid drive is intended for use with high maximum performancelevels, but low mid-range performance. For example with wheel tractors, forklifts, air-craft tractors, diggers and telehoist load luggers.

Istanbul

Project: Marmaray

Istanbul's traffic is a daily challenge. Around onefifth of the Turkish population lives in the capitolcity, causing both of the bridges across the

Bosporus and their access roads to be chronicallycongested. Traffic developers only saw one solutionto the problem: the modernisation of public trans-port and expansion of existing infrastructure. TheMarmaray Project, whose planning started as earlyas the 1980s, was kicked off in May 2004. Presentat the site of this spectacular construction project:DEUTZ engines. A railway tunnel is expected to rununder the Bosporus and parts of Istanbul from theyear 2009. The railway tunnel, which will link Asiaand Europe after its completion, is expected to be1.4 km long and run along the bed of the Bosporus,56 m under the surface. The plan includes excavat-ed tunnel sections for a total of 9.8 km, a sectionconstructed in the open that is 2.4 km long, threenew underground stations and 37 stations aboveground. An already existing railway line of 63 kilo-metres will also be expanded - a first-class con-struction project.

This unprecedented construction site calls formachines with the highest level of dependabilityand performance. Special equipment from the com-pany Putzmeister will use up to 5,000 m3 of con-crete for the job, one element of it being the con-crete spraying system SIKA PM400, which gets isthigh power drive from the DEUTZ BF 3 L 2011.Sprayed concrete is used when high quality hard-ened concrete is needed as well as high perform-ance, for example in tunnel boring. Compared todry spray, the wet sprayed process is, however, more work in the beginning and end stages, whendensity treatment is most important, because theprocessing time is determined while it is beingmanufactured, which means the spray concretemust be used in this time. This is a great challengefor the engines because their dependability andexactness must pursue, even under a tight sched-ule. It is a great challenge, but not too great forthese engines. They ensure the project’s progress,

Spectacular construction plans are

gripping the Bosporus region. A rail-

way tunnel is being built beneath the

Bosporus and parts of Istanbul in the

so-called Marmaray Project. Of course

one of the world's most spectacular

construction sites would not be com-

plete without DEUTZ.

The Marmaray Project isan amazing example of clockwork in construction.Large cranes will be used to let the eleven pre-con-structed tunnel segments down into the Bosporus, where they will then be connected. Lowering the30,000-ton segments into the strait requiresextremely exact precision. Heavy duty tug boats lugthe tunnel elements from the dock out to the Seaof Marmara, where there is a floating constructionplatform. From the catamaran-like platform, whichis affixed to the seabed by buoys attached to stealcables, the tunnel segments are lowered into aman-made trench. The compact wet spray manipu-lator type SIKA PM400 allows precise concreting;concreting segment ceilings is even possible whenthe basin is flooded. Michael Höss, Product andSales Engineer Tunnel Construction at Putzmeis-ter, states, “We have enjoyed long and prosperouscooperation with DEUTZ, even in other productareas, such as stationary pumps. For us, DEUTZmeans dependable teamwork.” All together, theMarmaray Project covers a length of 76.3 km. ■

The history of DEUTZ Argenti-na probably dates back toaround 1900. During that

time, the capitol city BuenosAires used a DEUTZ Energie gen-erator set. The Gas Engine Facto-ry DEUTZ AG had plans to send arepresentative to Argentina asearly as the end of the 18th Cen-tury, as there were goodprospects for the far-away coun-try. In 1884 the plans becamereality. No one would havethought that the engines were to

be produced locally merely 75years later. DEUTZ Cantábrica, anold DEUTZ subsidiary, signed anagreement with the governmentin August of 1959 to start uplocal production in a factory inHaedo, located 5 km from the cityborder of Buenos Aires. In 2009,DEUTZ AGCO Motores S.A.(DAMSA), a joint venture ofDEUTZ AG and the AGCO Corpora-tion founded in 2001, will cele-brate 50 years of Deutz produc-tion in Argentina.

Challenge Exhaust Emission Levels

DAMSA is still in the same facto-ry, carrying out production, inspection and administration ona total of 4,000 mÇ and produc-ing the series engines andgensets 913 and 1013. DEUTZArgentina’s director, ChristophSchulz, explains that in 2008,around 3,500 engines were man-ufactured. Currently DAMSAemploys a staff of 83, 52 of

whom are in production and 31 inadministration. The main areas ofapplication for DEUTZ engines inArgentina are in the farming andautomotive industries (buses).Christoph Schulz explains thatLatin America goes by a differentset of exhaust emission guide-lines than Europe and NorthAmerica. “The 913 engines wemake are Tier 0, which meansthey are produced exclusively forthe Latin American market. Our1013 engines for the city busescomply with the exhaust emissionlevel guidelines Euro 3, which arethe current standard. Euro 4 isalso expected to come into act in4-5 years." The Argentine marketis not placing any specialdemands. Christoph Schulzknows, “the DEUTZ engine is verypopular among customers

because it is robust, dependableand maintenance-friendly.”

90-95% of the engines are forthe local market

He goes on to explain that whatmakes the Argentine market sospecial is its strong orientationon local products. "90-95% oflocally produced DAMSA enginesare for the local market. The restgoes to the neighbouring coun-tries Uruguay, Chile, Bolivia, Peru

and Brazil." Products with a localproduction of 60% or higher countas “local products”. Almost 90%of the 913 engine is producedlocally, making it the local engine.Currently only approximately 30%of the 1013 engine is producedlocally, but there are plans toreach the required 60% within thenext two years. A large portion ofinvestments needed for this havealready gone through. 60-70% ofthe engines are used in agricul-ture. Further uses are, among

others, in buses, gensets andpumps. The engines get a largeamount of support from theArgentine government. It sup-ports local manufacturing by cut-ting rates for customs and taxesand paying out bonuses. ■

A country of superlatives: Argentina. The country that is known as South America’s most modern nation

stretches over an area of around 3 million km2: approximately 3,700 km from north to south and 1,400 km

from west to east. The northern part of the country borders on the tropical rainforests of Brazil, Paraguay

and Bolivia; in the south lie the cliffs of Cape Horn in Tierra del Fuego - the end of the world. Argentina is

also one of the richest countries in the world. Its treasures are made up of an abundance of natural gas,

crude oil, coal, metals and millions of cattle and gigantic grain fields. DEUTZ established itself in the heart

of the country over 50 years ago.

It is surrounded by myth and mystery from long ago. Those travellingfrom London to Venice via Orient Express require not only time tospare, but must also be avid about vintage times. But behind the

scenes of the luxury train things are all but cosy; underneath the train, just a few centimetres above the tracks, DEUTZ engines are makingsure that the annual average of 15,000 passengers enjoy a smoothtrip. The Orient Express is a legend of the railway. With a length of over400 metres, the nostalgic high luxury train takes up to 188 passen-gers on their journey into the past. The characteristic 17 blue and goldwagons have been in use since 1883 and have been made immortalby Agatha Christie’s novel. In 1982 the Venice Simplon Orient Expresswas introduced and has now been completely restored.

Today it still takes the same route from Venice’s train station San-ta Lucia via Paris to London’s Victoria train station and back. 1578kilometres through Europe, from Bolzano to Innsbruck, via Zurich, toStrasbourg and then to Paris. The long stretch ends in Calais, afterwhich a bus takes the passengers through the tunnel and to anothertrain for a 2 hour ride to London.

DEUTZ provides flawless power supply

A once-in-a-lifetime experience that involves a lot of work behind thescenes. In part taken care of by two authentic DEUTZ originals: theF4M2011 and the F3L912. Both of the oil-cooled 4- and 3-cylinderengines supply the restaurant car, kitchen and air-conditioning systemwith power. With a performance of 30.9 kW at 1,500 rpm, they guar-antee that this one-of-a-kind experience becomes an unforgettablememory. Since 1998 the engines have been regularly serviced andoverhauled by DEUTZ dealer “Officina Bicciato Evelino S.r.l.” in Padua. For 15 years, IML Motori S.p.A. has been working with the dealer whowas connected to the company “Orient Express Vsoe”.

“Cooperation with this customer has helped further spreadDEUTZ’s name and the quality high performance of the engines illus-trate DEUTZ’s excellent know-how,” according to Rudi Alborghetti,Head Aftersales and Services of IML Motori. Servicing takes placeeach year in Venice in winter. Not long ago, the owner of OrientExpress decided to replace two of the old F3L912 with twoF4M2011s, thus using the external electric cooling system to createhigher cooling performance.

Extreme load on the engines

Markus Schneider, responsible for Distribution Rail Vehicles at DEUTZ,knows how hard it is on the engines to run in the Orient Express: “Theengine must be able to withstand a very high impact, with forces up to3-5 G, this is only possible due to a special design in which the engineis fixed by engine feet to the coach body, sometimes with clampingpins or long screws. In addition, the fuel pipes and cable harness mustbe fire retardant and TÜV approved and the function of the crankcasebreather must be guaranteed. A so-called EMV test is done to makesure the overhead contact line has no impact the engine’s control unitand conversely, that the engine’s signals do not inhibit the train con-trol system.” An elegant combination of railway romanticism with high technicalexpertise and long traditions. ■

Flawless power supply guaranteed by DEUTZ engines, in the

heart of the Orient Express

The journey from Venice to London takes you right through the middle of

Europe. The 17 dark blue cars travel through Bozen to Innsbruck. There the

Orient Express takes a turn to St. Anton and Zurich, to then travel through

Strasbourg to Paris. The passengers cross the English Channel to get to

London. It costs far over 2,000 Euros. Around 15,000 passengers travel

on it annually. This corresponds to a performance of around 95 percent.

Marine

Set off with DEUTZ

The “Rhineland” has one further attraction asof this year; the fastest passenger ship in Ger-many set sail on the longest river in the sum-

mer of 2009. The 5 star passenger ship is drivenby two DEUTZ TCD 2015 V08, each acting as maindrive with an output of 500 kW at 2,100rpm each. Two 146 kW, 1,500rpm board aggregate enginesBF6M1013MC in the engine rooms create theship’s electricity.

The ship was built at the shipyard Lux in Mon-dorf, near Cologne. According to Stefan Geuer,Sales Manager Marine, “It was an advantage thatthe ship was built around the corner, so to speak. It made it easier to drop by when there were prob-lems. This project required the cooperation of manydifferent DEUTZ departments in coordination withLux, and that is normal when you are sending an

engine off “into the great, wide world” for the firsttime.” The finish date had been set; originally theship was to set off in June of 2009, to take advan-tage of high season. Rainer Winand, owner of theLoreley Line states, “We were able to start up pas-senger operation on time. Right now, we are morethan happy with the engines."

TCD 2015M offers up to 500 kW

The new series TCD 2015M is equipped with anelectronically controlled solenoid valve system andhas thus an optimised combustion system. Thanksto this technology, the engines are able to meetexhaust emission regulations as stipulated by theRhein Vessel Inspection Regulations (RheinSchUO),the European Code for Interior Navigation and the

American Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).Because the par ticulate emission levels forengines of this series are lower than regulationsrequire, this also allows DEUTZ customers eligibilityto apply for funding for new models and re-engining. After DEUTZ was able to create a performance of440 kW in the series 1015M, we are now able tooffer the series 2015M, which has a performanceof 500 kW.

Power and dependability – that it what DEUTZstands for

Herbert Müller, Sales Manager Marine, states, “withour power range of 65 to 500 kW, we are more thanready for the future. The series 1013M and 1015Mwith mechanical controlling are high-demand prod-ucts, especially in regions that are not yet focusingon electrically controlled engines. The series 2015M,which deploys DEUTZ’s own fully electronic, singleinjection pump solenoid valve system guaranteesinnovative and dependable compliance to emissionregulations. Increasing volume of queries and proj-ects here in Germany and outside as well has proventhat we are in good condition.”

Jürgen Gabriel, manager of Niche Market Distribu-tion, has noted, "reaching the unimaginable limit of500 kW in the Marine Segment has opened upmany possibilities for the future for us.” The MarineSegment is a niche market for DEUTZ AG, but thesemarkets are also very important for DEUTZ.” Whatis appealing is realising complex projects, becausehere, we don’t only have to concentrate on theengine, but on the entire propulsion system. Thereis more work involved in individual rail or marineprojects of this kind, but these are also uses thatare very service-intensive, which is beneficial forour After Sales Business. Gabriel goes on to say,“quite a high number of running hours are accumu-lated, and especially when it comes to passengertransport, servicing must be done regularly forsafety reasons.” ■P

DEUTZ is stepping on it onthe race track

Formula One has found a new home in the United Arab Emirateswith the Yas Marina Circuit. The speedway is 5.55 km of asphaltthat runs by the harbour, through the city centre of the island Yas

Marina in Abu Dhabi under the scorching desert sun. It even runsright through a luxury hotel. The Formula One Etihad Airways AbuDhabi Grand Prix is an unprecedented, spectacular event in the landof 1001 Nights and there could hardly be more work involved.Such a large project requires dependable and high-quality support. Two high-power pavers from the company VÖGELE and 8 rollers fromHAMM have been taking care of this since May 2008, all powered byDEUTZ. Right after arrival in the Persian Gulf, the high performance

paver Super 1900-2, equipped with DEUTZ’s TCD 2012 L6 2V, start-ed on the base layer and binder course. And not only for the over 5km race track itself, but also for the run-off areas, paddocks, escaperoutes and access roads. For this one-of-a-kind project 950,000 t ofbase course gravel and 750,000 m2 surface area asphalt have beenused to create a perfect and even-layered race track. The maximumallowed tolerance is 2 mm per 4 meters lengthwise. This is a realchallenge for the engines inside of the machines; the asphalt paversare the core of the new track's construction - their dependability is ofcourse most important. Frank Niclaus, District Head of New EnginesDistribution, commented, "if one of the asphalt pavers breaks downduring road construction, it could bring the rest of construction tem-porarily to a standstill.” That would spell out catastrophe for such a

large project. Niclaus goes on to explain, “our engines are not onlyrenowned for their consistent performance, but also for their absolutedependability in extreme conditions. Climatic conditions are also veryextreme here and really put our engines to the test.” Conformity is soimportant because the race cars will reach speeds of up to 320 km/hon the long straights. The TCD2012 L6 2V is the diesel heart of theSuper 1900-2 paver. The robust 6 cylinder inline engine is known notonly for its high performance density, but also because it runs verysmoothly and is thus perfect for deployment in large constructionprojects. Aside from pre-designed slopes on the speedway, the over20, partially sharp curves inspire the drivers to do overtakingmanoeuvres, which will create a suspenseful 55-lap race.

When the tracked pavers are through with their work, rollers take careof the final compression and sealing of the high-speed track. Employ-

ing the TD2011 L4W, HAMM’s tandem rollers also rely on DEUTZquality for their drive. Powered by 63 kW at 2,500 rpm-1, the TD 2011is a compact classic of DEUTZ’s successful series that carries thesame name. The 4 cylinder engine has impressively low exhaustemission values and thus meets stage III of Exhaust Emission Direc-tive 2004/26/EU as well as EPA Tier III for mobile machinery.

The race track project encompasses an area of 2,550 hectares andis part of a large and costly plan to create an island, complete withan artificial harbour, seven hotels and a yacht club with an adjoininggolf course. Construction of the race track took over 2 years. Not untilOctober 2009 were the Formula One drivers allowed to test out thebrand new track. ■

Two years of construction, more than 14,000 people working each

day, calculated construction costs: 275 million Euros (in the end

the costs were near a billion Euros). The enormous construction

site, Yas Marina Circuit, where the new Formula One race track in

Abu Dhabi was built, has been one of the largest construction

projects of the past few years. But before the Formula One drivers

were able to start up their engines on the Emirate desert course,

someone else had to race to the finish: DEUTZ.

Deutz Dieselpower has been supplyingengines for the local market in Johan-nesburg, South Africa, for more than 27

years. In addition, DDP offers technical sup-port for new and remodelled DEUTZ engines. The company is still going from strength tostrength with huge demand from OriginalEquipment Manufacturers (OEM). The fore-cast for 2009 with its difficult trading condi-tions still indicates sales performance will behigher than in 2007 (discounting the phenom-enally successful 2008). Demand for newdesigns from customers in the mining indus-try (especially platinum and gold) has openednew markets for the range of engines. Thisdemand spread across the range of compactair-cooled and liquid-cooled engines in variousapplications.

“We are experiencing growing demand inthe field of mine construction, because thereis an increasing need globally for raw materi-als such as platinum and rhodium,” accordingto Marketing Director Rowan Michelson.

The range of new developments is alsoimpressive, with the Air-cooled Diesel Genset(ADG) a complete success, not least becauseof its resilience even under difficult environ-mental conditions. The new BF6L914 (EMR)was very successful during its 16 month trial, when it was run on an LHD. The TD2009L04was also partially installed in an “ultra lowprofile radio remote controlled dozer applica-tion” and was successful here as well.

Aside from the mining industry, whichmakes up the largest fraction, service is alsovery important. Many queries from military,

industry and construction are processed here.An increase in these sectors is mainly due toincreasing deployment of DEUTZ engines there.

The increased demand is also leading tostructural changes at Deutz Dieselpower. ACentre of Excellence, aimed at improving cus-tomer service, will be opened in Johannes-burg in November 2009, explains Michelson.Support and Service for new engines, SpareParts and the head office, among others, willbe based there. Customers will therefore beable to find everything under one roof. TheSouth African DEUTZ associated company isalso offering further solutions: a call-out serv-ice which travels directly to the place of use togive support for technical problems. DeutzDieselpower also has a Business Unit Manag-er who can tackle customer enquiries whichcover many subjects, so that the customerdoes not need to make the effort of dealingwith different departments. These are hand-picked employees that have extensive experi-ence in both the technical and sales fields. They handle all customer queries - from tech-nical, application, installation, debtor andfuture business queries.

The company employs 185 people acrossSouth Africa. It also utilises the service part-ner concept in areas in South Africa whereDDP does not have its own representation andin certain countries throughout the rest ofAfrica, like Lesotho, Swaziland, Namibia,Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Kenya,Uganda, Tanzania, Ghana, and Mauritius. ■

Press newsMay – October 2009

In the United Arab Emirates, the “Big 5 Show”, which will take placefrom 23 – 26 November 2009 in Dubai, will be the leading trade fairfor various areas of the construction industry. In the past this show

has always been the driving power of economic growth in the region.Even DEUTZ AG, represented in the United Arab Emirates by its

representative office “DEUTZ Gulf / Jebel Ali” in Dubai, will be fur-ther represented by quite a number of products that are equippedwith DEUTZ technologies. Service and spare parts supply will beundertaken by the dealer network, among them: Universal TradingCompany, with its headquarters in Abu Dhabi. DEUTZ engines arevery popular in the region, as Peter Mueller, Vice President Sales &Service Middle East, Africa, knows. He says that "when it comes topumps, the engines are known for being robust and dependable, even in extreme climatic and environmental conditions. This is espe-cially appreciated by our OEMs as well as the operators of thesedrainage pumps, which are often used for months at a time, non-stop, 24 hours a day.” Local environmental conditions must also beconsidered. In the United Arab Emirates and many neighbouringcountries, groundwater levels must be lowered for the duration ofconstruction and infrastructure projects.

The pump manufacturer Oasis, located in Abu Dhabi, is one of themany companies that rely on DEUTZ quality. Oasis will be presentinga new drainage pump type at Big5, equipped with D914L03. DEUTZengines meet all current European and US exhaust specifications forthis purpose and beyond that, also has optimised sound characteris-tics. Thus the products displayed by Oasis and other pump manufac-turers are representative of anticipated future exhaust emission poli-cies in the United Arab Emirates.

In early summer of this year, Abu Dhabi became the headquartersof the new Environment Agency Irena. Abu Dhabi has been theregion’s trend setter for the development of renewable energy and forthe implementation of eco-friendly technologies. Here the “Rhineland”was out of luck as Germany’s Bonn lost as contestant for the head-quarters of the Environment Agency.

In a second phase, addi-tional fuel evaporates and mixes with the engine exhaustat the burner outlet. The combustion at the first phasecauses an increase in exhaust temperature up to a mini-mum of 300° C, which causes the evaporated fuel fromthe second phase to oxidise in the catalyser. Getting exhaust temperatures to 600-650° C, which isrequired for filter regeneration, is controlled by theamount of fuel injection in the second phase.
