Wechselpräpositionen
an auf hinter in neben über unter vor zwischen
The prepositions take either the accusative or the dative case.
1. Use the accusative if there is significant change of location/position. In other
words, if the action has moved from one place to a different place, or a specific
“boarder” has been crossed.
2. Use dative if the former does not occur, for example, if the action occurring in a
confined, defined space.
Helpful ways to think about this:
1. English speakers usually distinguish between “in” & “to” in such sentences as:
The dog ran into the house
The dog is in the house
He moved into high circles.
He moved in high circles.
2. Most of the time, however, English speakers do not make this distinction. For
example:
The dog ran under the car. The dog is under the car.
In this case, English does not distingui9sh between the “in” situation and the
“into” situation. German makes this distinction (when using two-way
prepositions) by taking accusative for “into” situations and dative for “in”
situations. For example:
Der Hund läuft unter das Auto.
Der Hund liegt unter dem Auto.
Additional notes: 1. an describes an area “leaning against and touching” or “by” or “at” the point of
reference. For example:
Sie sitzen an dem Tisch. They are sitting “up against“ or “at” the table.
auf describes an area “on top of” the point of reference. For example:
Sie sitzen auf dem Tisch. They are sitting on top of the table.
2. Wo and wohin
Wo bist du? Where are you?
Wohin gehst du? Where are you going?

16. First circle if the sentence is in accusative (to) or dative (in), then fill in the blanks with
the appropriate definite articles (der, die, das, dem, den)
1. Das Kind geht unter __________ Tisch (m). acc / dat
2. Das Kind ist unter __________ Tisch (m). acc / dat
3. Martin geht an __________ Fenster (n). acc / dat
4. Martin steht an __________ Fenster (n). acc / dat
5. Der Stuhl ist hinter __________ Schreibtisch (m). acc / dat
6. Das Auto fährt hinter __________ Haus (n). acc / dat

8. Dein Buch liegt neben __________ Zeitung (f). acc / dat
9. Er läuft zwischen __________ Stühle (pl). acc / dat
10. Er steht zwischen __________ Stühlen (pl) acc / dat
17. Fill in the blanks with the prepositions + nouns in the proper case. Remember to
check whether the verb indications motion or not! (remember that ‘wo’ (location) vs.
‘wohin’ (motion) provides a big clue!)

At a typical snack bar (Schnellimbiss) you will be able to get sausages with bread or a roll and mustard (Würstchen mit Brot oder Semmel und Senf) and a soft drink at a reasonable price. A roll is called Semmel in southern Germany and Brötchen in the northern region. Germany offers more than 30 kinds of rolls. The café (Café or Konditorei) is a German institution that dates back centuries. It’s quite common for Germans to sit in a café with friends for an hour or two, order a cup of coffee (Tasse Kaffee) and a piece of delicious cake (Torte) or just some ice cream (Eis). Depending on weather, people can been sitting in outdoor cafes from early May through September.
From the Ratskeller to the Schnellimbiss The variety of eating and drinking places in Germany is enormous. The Ratskeller, located in the basement of the city hall (Rathaus), can still be found in large and medium –sized cities. The city politicians used to dine here and spend hours discussing city affairs. Today, the Ratskeller is still considered to be an upscale restaurant that is often reserved for special occasions. In the afternoon, Germans like to go to a Café or Konditorei (pastry shop) which serves a wide assortment of cakes and pastries (Kuchen und Torten) as well as ice cream, coffee and other beverages. In Germany you will also find a large variety of foreign restaurants such as Chinese, Greek, Turkish, Italian, American, as well as steak houses, pizzerias, and others. A Schnellimbiss, Schnellgaststätte, Imbissstube or simple an Imbiss is a snack bar. There you can get a quick bite to eat and something to drink for a reasonable price. You usually eat standing at a counter or at a small round table. Most of these snack bars offer a variety of sausages. The Bratwurst is fat, white and spicy; the Currywurst is similar, but served with a curry sauce; Bockwurst is longer and reddish, something like a thick American hot dog. The Frankfurter is thinner and usually sold in pairs. At an Imbiss sausages are eaten using the fingers. You don’t get a bun, but often a slice of bread (eine Scheibe Brot) or a small roll (Brötchen or Semmel) that comes with the sausages. 1. When you are in a hurry and don’t have time to sit down, you would eat in a __________. 2. A slice of bread is called eine __________ __________. 3. A __________ is located in a city hall. 4.
