Unsuitable locations for setting up and using the PC

Avoid setting up the PC under the following conditions. Doing so may result in malfunction, damage or poor reception.

The PC should be operated under the following conditions. (During operation) temperature: 10-35°C; relative humidity: 20-80%. (When not in use) 10-60°C & 20-90%.

Condensation is a phenomenon involving the formation of water droplets in the air. It occurs when moving the PC from a cool location (e.g., near an air-conditioner or outdoors when cold) to a warm location (e.g., a warm room or in the hot sun). Be aware that the formation of condensation may damage the PC.

Be aware that using the PC in a location where corrosive gases (e.g., sulfur gases released from a hot spring) are present may cause the PC to corrode.

Be aware that smoking near the PC may result in tobacco resins and smoke penetrating the PC, reducing the performance of the CPU fan, etc.

If the ventilation holes in the PC become clogged due to dust, etc., airflow will deteriorate, possibly reducing the cooling efficiency of the CPU fan. Therefore, periodically remove dust from the ventilation holes using a vacuum cleaner, etc.

Using the PC in areas affected by radio wavesWhen using the PC in the following surroundings, the wireless keyboard and mouse may be affected by radio waves in the vicinity, causing them to function improperly.

When the PC is placed on a metallic surface, such as a steel desk or steel shelves When there is an electrical or electronic device or metallic object placed between the PC and the

wireless keyboard and mouse When using an electrical or electronic device (including a wireless device) in the vicinity that

produces noise When a device using the same radio wave frequency as the PC is present in the vicinity (e.g., when

using several of these computers, when a radio station is located nearby, or when using a radio controller or radio in the vicinity)

When the PC is located near a microwave oven

Extremely hot or cold locationsLocations with condensation

Locations exposed to direct sunlight

Locations exposed to water and other liquidsHighly-humid locations

26 Chapter 2 Getting Started

In these situations, normal operation may be attained by changing the orientation or position of the PC, by adjusting the angle of the liquid crystal display, or by changing the IDs of the wireless keyboard and mouse.

PC handling precautions

Do not bump the PC or press it down with excessive force. Doing so may result in damage. Do not scratch the screen or press it with a sharp object. Doing so may damage it. Do not press the fronts of the speakers with force. Doing so may damage it. Do not place rubber or plastic materials directly on the screen or cover for extended periods of

time. The surfaces may peel off or become deformed. Using a cellular phone or PHS near the PC may cause abnormal sounds to occur or result in display

disturbances, so avoid using them near the PC. Do not use cables connected to the PC when they are overstretched. Doing so may result in damage

or failure. Sounds that can be heard from inside the PC and heat produced by the PC.

When using the PC, you may be able to hear the fan as it expels heat from inside the PC, the hard drive revolving while reading/writing data, or a CD/DVD revolving. Also, the PC may feel hot during use due to heat being retained. None of these indicate damage.

Use only genuine Fujitsu peripheral devices. This product is not designed to operate continuously day and night (i.e., 24-hours a day). Turn the

power off when not in use.

How to avoid tiredness when using the PC

When using the PC for an extended period of time, you may experience eye fatigue, or neck, back and shoulder ache. This is mainly caused by maintaining the same position for many hours or continuously looking at the screen or keyboard from a close distance. When using the PC, be aware of your posture and surroundings so as to avoid tiredness.

The display Use curtains or blinds, or adjust the angle or orientation of the screen to prevent outdoor light from

entering the eyes directly and screen glare. Adjust the brightness of the screen or the size of the text to make it easy to view. Place the display so that the top edge is at the same level or slightly lower than the eyes. Adjust the display so that it directly in front of your face.

Operating time Avoid using the PC continuously for more than one hour. When using the PC continuously, take a

10-15 minute break every hour. In addition, take short 1-2 minute breaks between the longer breaks.

Precautions concerning lightning

If there is a possibility of lightning, we recommend you switch the PC off and unplug all of the cables. There are two types of lightning: direct lightning and indirect lightning. PC failures mainly result from indirect lightning. Indirect lightning comes through electric and phone lines, creating a strong electromagnetic field in the vicinity due to thunder. In the case of computers, indirect lightning comes through power cords, TV antenna cables, external device cables, phone lines (modular cables), LAN cables, and so on. Although objects can be protected from direct lightning by inducting lightning using a lightning rod, cables should be unplugged to protect against indirect lightning. Depending on the situation, peripheral devices may be damaged in addition to the PC.Be aware that repair costs may become expensive depending on the extent of the damage.

Caring for the liquid crystal display

Wipe smears on the liquid crystal display lightly with a soft cloth, such as gauze. Chemical wipes and commercial cleaners contain the following ingredients, which can scratch the

surface coating of the screen or the cover, so avoid using them.- Alkalines- Surfactants- Alcohol- Strongly volatile materials, including thinners and benzene- Abrasives

Optical Drive

The optical drive pre-set at factory to read DVD title with region codes for specific Asia Pacific markets (e.g. code 3 for Asian, code 4 for Australia, code 6 for China).- The first time you play a DVD title with a region code different from that of the DVD optical drive - the

region code set at factory, you will be prompted to change the region code of the DVD optical drive.- The region code of a DVD optical drive can be changed up to 3 times, after which it will be locked so that

the DVD optical drive can only play DVD titles of the final region code set.

IMPORTANTIMPORTANTAntenna cables will be supplied along with the PC unit so if the cable supplied has sufficient length, then it won’t be necessary to purchase another antenna cable. It will be required if the cable supplied is not long enough. Inquire at your nearest electrical store about installing an antenna.

Use an F-connectorWe recommend using F-connectors to connect antenna cables to the PC since they are resistant to noise interference. For information on how to install the F-connector, refer manual for F-connectors or inquire at an electrical store.

Be aware of the following points when connecting an alternative to an F-connector The shape (size) of the connector may prevent you from being able to connect it to the PC.

It may also be impossible to simultaneously connect another cable, such as an S-video cable. Other types of cables are easily affected by noise compared to F-connectors, which may result in

disturbances in the video picture.

When connecting antenna cables, turn off all the power to this productConnect the antenna cables after you have turned off all the power to this product.

Be careful not to snap the metal core When connecting the antenna cable, be careful not to snap the metal core of the connector.

If there is a possibility of lightning in the vicinity, turn the PC power off, unplug the power cord from the outlet, and unplug the modular and antenna cables from the jacks. Continuing to use them as it is could result in electric shock or fire due to the lightning.

How the mouse worksThe optical mouse contains an optical sensor on the underside. When the mouse moves over a surface, such as a desk, the shadow of the red light projected from the underside of the mouse is detected by the optical sensor, causing the mouse pointer to move across the screen.

Precautions on using the optical mouseAlthough the optical mouse can be used on a number of surfaces, including desks and paper, it may not work properly on the following surfaces: Highly reflective surfaces, such as mirrors and glass Shiny surfaces Striped or patterned surfaces (e.g., wood grain) Surfaces with repetitive patterns, such as printed dotsSince the optical sensor detects the position of the mouse without touching the surface, there is no need for a mouse pad. However, since the mouse itself touches the surface, we recommend using a mouse pad on desks or tables that are easily scratched. When using a mouse pad, we recommend using a mouse pad with a bright, solid color.

If the mouse reaches the edge of the desk1 If the mouse reaches the edge of the desk, 2 pick it up and move it to a different position.

The buttons only need to be pressed lightly! There is no need to press the buttons forcefully. Release your finger immediately after clicking the mouse button once.

Prior to using peripherals 51

1 Prior to using peripherals

This section explains precautions that you should be aware of before using any peripherals, including memory, keyboard, mouse and remote control.

WARNING

What is a peripheral?

Peripherals are devices such as memory, printers, digital camera or scanners that are installed internally in the PC or connected to it externally via connectors. The keyboard, mouse and remote control that come with this computer are also explained in this section.

Why install peripherals?

Adding memory to increase the processing power of your PC, or connecting a printer, and so on, expands the capabilities of your PC. You can also upload pictures taken with a digital camera to your PC and attach them to e-mails.

Precautions for handling peripherals

Be aware of the following points when installing a peripheral. We recommend using genuine Fujitsu peripherals

If the PC is damaged or fails to operate properly due to installing a peripheral sold by another manufacturer when a Fujitsu product is available, such problems will not be covered by the warranty. If a Fujitsu product is not available, check with the manufacturer that the peripheral is compatible with this PC.

Is Windows Setup finished?Refer to "Turning the power on for the first time - Windows Setup" and set up Windows.Do not install peripherals while setting up Windows since this may cause setup to fail.

Check that the driver supplied with the peripheral is compatible with the Windows OS you are usingIf the peripheral driver is incompatible with the Windows OS you are using, you will not be able to use the peripheral. Be sure to obtain drivers that are compatible with the Windows OS you are using.

When installing or removing a peripheral, turn the power off to the PC and any devices that are connected to it, and remove the power plugs from outlets. Carrying out work without doing so could result in electric shock, fire or damage.

Connect peripheral cables properly after carefully reading this manual. Using a peripheral that is incorrectly connected could cause electric shock or fire, or could damage the PC or the peripheral.

52 Chapter 5 Installing and Setting Up Peripherals, and Replacing Memory

If the driver is supplied on a floppy diskSome drivers may be provided on a floppy disk depending on the peripheral. In that case, install the driver after purchasing and installing an optional floppy disk drive (USB).

Use ACPI-compliant peripheralsSince this PC controls the power supply based on the ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) specification, peripherals must be ACPI-compliant.If you use peripherals that are not ACPI-compliant, the PC and/or the peripherals may not function properly. Check with that manufacturer that the peripheral is ACPI-compliant.The ACPI mode of this PC is set to standby (ACPI S3).

Only install one peripheral at a timeInstalling multiple peripherals at the same time can cause problems with the installation of drivers. Make sure that a peripheral is working properly after installing it before installing another peripheral.

Turn the power off to the PC and connected devicesIt is critical to remove the power plugs from outlets. Current continues flowing through the PC even when it is turned off. See "Turning the power off" for information on how to turn the PC off.

Do not do any work immediately after turning the power offThe inside of the PC remains hot immediately after turning the power off. Wait ten minutes after switching the power off and removing the power plug from the outlet before doing any work.

Do not disassemble the power supply unitThe power supply unit is a box-shaped component located at the back inside the PC.

Handle internal cables and devices carefullyDo not damage, alter, twist or forcefully bend them.

3 Installing and setting up the wireless keyboard and mouse

This section explains how to set up the wireless keyboard and mouse.

Positioning the keyboard and mouse properly

Set the wireless keyboard and mouse up as follows.

The wireless keyboard and mouse send signals to the PC using a wireless system. The PC has a keyboard and mouse antenna built into it to receive these signals.

On a flat and stable surface, such as a desk At about the same height as the PC unit, in a location with sufficient space to operate

them properly A maximum of 10 meters from the PC (less than 3 meters is recommended), within 45

degrees either side of the PC

62 Chapter 5 Installing and Setting Up Peripherals, and Replacing Memory

IMPORTANTIMPORTANTPrecautions when using the wireless keyboard and mouse The wireless keyboard and mouse may not work properly in the following situations due to interference

from radio waves in the vicinity. Remove sources of interference when changing locations.

The keyboard and mouse antenna is too far from the keyboard and mouse transmitters. There are electrical/electronic devices and metal objects placed between the PC and the keyboard and

mouse. The PC is setup on a metal base, such as a steel desk or steel cabinet. Electrical/electronic devices (including wireless devices) that generate noise. There is a metal object near the PC (a steel desk or a desk with metal in it). There is a device in the vicinity that is using radio waves that are the same frequency as the PC (several

PCs are being used or a radio or remote control is being used in the vicinity, or there is a radio station nearby).

The PC is setup near a microwave oven. A PC using a wireless keyboard or mouse is being used nearby.

In these situations, get the wireless keyboard and mouse working properly by changing the orientation or position of the PC, by adjusting the angle of the liquid crystal display, or by changing the IDs of the wireless keyboard and mouse.

To reduce battery consumption, the wireless mouse enters sleep mode by completely shutting the optical sensor off after the mouse has remained idle for about ten seconds. The mouse wakes up from sleep mode when it detects motion, and is equipped with a motion sensor for detecting movement. When you shake the mouse, you will hear a rattling sound. This is the motion sensor, and is not a defect, so please use it as is.

About the batteries

This section explains about the batteries for the wireless keyboard and mouse that came with this PC.

The batteries supplied at purchase are for checking that the keyboard and mouse work properly. The batteries may reach the end of their life immediately, so replace them with new ones promptly.

The estimated life of the batteries is about 6 months for the keyboard and 3 months for the mouse when used two hours/day.(However, this period may decrease depending on the usage conditions.)Use two commercially-available AA alkaline batteries when replacing the batteries.

Be sure to use alkaline batteries. The keyboard and mouse may not work properly if you use non-alkaline batteries (such as manganese or rechargeable batteries).

When the PC is not in use, avoid moving the keyboard and mouse as much as possible. Battery power gets drained if the keyboard and mouse are operated even when the PC is switched off. In addition, avoid placing objects on top of the keyboard and mouse.

Remove the batteries when you are not using the keyboard or mouse for a long period of time.Battery power gets drained even when the mouse and keyboard are left idle. Remove the batteries when you are not using the keyboard or mouse for a long period of time.

4 The remote controlThis section explains precautions when using the remote control and how to replace the batteries.

IMPORTANTIMPORTANTUse the remote controlUse the remote control supplied with this product.

Replacing the batteries

CAUTION

See "Inserting batteries in the remote control unit" for information on how to replace the batteries in the remote control.

Precautions when using the remote

Be aware of the following points when using the remote control. Use the remote sensor for the PC. The remote sensor for the display cannot be used. Point the remote control at the remote sensor so that signals can easily be received. Place the remote sensor in a location free of obstructions between the remote sensor and

the remote control. Avoid using the remote control in locations exposed to strong direct sunlight. The remote

control may only work at a short distance in some cases. The remote control may not work properly if used near a plasma display, plasma TV or a

halogen heater. This is because infrared rays from the plasma display, plasma TV or halogen heater interfere with the transmission of signals between the remote control and the remote sensor. If this happens, move the remote sensor or the plasma display, plasma TV or halogen heater to a different location.

The remote sensor connected to the PC may malfunction if it receives signals emitted from the infrared control cable. When attaching the infrared control cable, place it right next to the remote sensor for the set top box. Avoid transmitting the signals from the emitter toward the remote sensor connected to the PC.

Do not insert metal objects into the battery compartment or drop it. Doing so could damage it.

Remove batteries that have reached the end of their life immediately. Failing to do so could result in battery leakage.
