Curriculum vitae For Stephen Smith
MASTER Class 1
With over 15 years Offshore Oil and Gas Industry and over decade in Australian
Merchant Navy, I have a unique blend of professionalism, academic qualification &
experience, in every aspect of Offshore Marine Operations.
As an Australian Master Unlimited can sail any vessel in the world to any destination.
Been Master on-board now in excess of 13 years.
Due to my vast experience in offshore (overseas and domestic) have covered every
aspect of operations including Supply, Anchor Handling, towing, Dynamic Positioning
too Seismic have done it all.
Have not had a major incident or LTI in over a decade as Master this is rare in Australia.
I first began working offshore with Swire’s overseas, working in some the biggest oil
fields in the world.
I have obtained great deal of experience Anchor Handling with Semi-submersible, Jack
up Rigs, Construction Barges, Pipe Laying Barges and towage of all kinds.
With this kind of work I have worked with a great variety of vessel ranging in horse
power from 4,000HP to 15,000HP. The age of vessels is greatly diverse from maiden
voyage to vessel’s over 20 years old. I have worked with DP2 vessel to old clutch in and
out and then to standard 704’s with CPP.
In addition to anchor handling I have worked on PSV’s doing supply ranging from
general supply of rigs to carrying pipes for pipe layer.
I naturally have a great deal time spent on DP vessels and have my full D.P.
qualifications. Served on DP vessels ranging from DSV, ROV, PSV and AHTS.
Basically I have international standard and accepted Master Class 1 qualifications
(second to none) with an employment record detailing a wide and diverse range of
maritime experience in the offshore oil industry. I have worked hard to attain these
qualifications and have dedicated myself to getting the most experience possible in
offshore industry.
Now due to hard work and sacrifice I can say I have a great deal of experience in most
aspects of offshore work and look forward to giving my wealth of knowledge to my
employer. I am now in thirteenth year of command and due to background am very
confident in my ability to do the job safely and in a professional manner.
I have broken up CV into sections obvious the mix of Merchant Navy & Extensive
Offshore Experience makes this candidate number 0NE!
Their great shortage of properly trained personnel in regards to Master Unlimited. I
trained in Australian Merchant Navy in early 90’s (which was twilight era of Merchant
Navy) mixed with over 16 years working for the biggest offshore vessel companies such
as Swire and Tidewater( I am a pearl in oyster in such companies as mix of qualification
& experience is such a rarity.)

Management
Due to background mainly in Australian Merchant Navy as Master 1 with the additional
14 years offshore I have comprehensive qualifications and experience in all aspects of
Ship Management.
In Australia and the world there is no body better trained over prolonged period than an
Australia Master Mariner with many years in all aspects of offshore operations?
A Master Mariner is a safety training for Marine environment developed over hundreds
of years through originally the British Merchant Navy.
All aspects of Safe Navigation in respects to Stability, Collision avoidance, celestial
sights (sextant), Radar operation, Meteorology, Magnetic Compass, cargo Operations
and all subjects of second Mates and Masters are all safety based.
This mixed with short courses such as Master Medical, Advanced Fire Fighting,
Command Navigation, and LSA training are all important safety training when at sea.
Whilst an officer at sea (for over 6 years getting seas time up) you are in charge of all
safety in regard to all firefighting and lifesaving equipment. These checks done monthly
and drill carried out monthly for training and operational check as per regulations. All
chart and publication have to correct up to date this is major safety job which is only
properly done to standard in Australian merchant navy and is lacking offshore hence
vessels running aground.
Every vessel had to adhere to Class Certificates which basically make the vessel sea
worthy by International Law. These Include such certificates as Load line, Radio
certificate, International ship Management, ISPS (security), Safe Manning, Safety
Equipment and many more. Most for 5 years but have annual check completed by
classification societies. Over 20 years have been involved in countless surveys. As
Master in charge all are in date and in order.
