Stein, sondern filigraner, naturbelassener
Bambus. Die Bambusstbe sind mit Ab-
stand zueinander angeordnet und bilden
die uerste, durchlssige Schicht der
Gebudehlle. Die eigentliche Lochfassadedes Schlafzimmertraktes wird von dieser
vollstndig berdeckt. Im Bereich der Fen-
sterffnungen sind die Stbe zu verschieb-
baren Elementen zusammengefasst. Vor
den groflchigen Verglasungen des Wohn-
bereichs dient der Bambusschirm vor allem
als Sonnen- und Sichtschutz.
Von innen besehen, bildet das Bambusge-
stnge eine geometrische Struktur, durch
die man die bewaldete Hgellandschaft wie
durch einen Filter wahrnimmt. Die Decken,
die Stahlbetonsttzen und teilweise auch
die Wnde sind ebenfalls mit Bambus be-
kleidet.

A model estate, comprising 11 houses and a
clubhouse, has been built near the Great Wall
of China. Designed by selected Asian archi-
tects, the scheme is a token of the economic
changes taking place in China and the desire
for private property among the growing mid-
dle and upper classes. Kengo Kumas long,
two-storey house, the Bamboo Wall, was in-
spired by the Great Wall itself and the way it
merges with the landscape. The dominant
material used in Kumas house, however, is
bamboo. The slender, untreated stems are
fixed vertically in an open form to create a di-
aphanous screen around the building. The ac-tual facade of the bedroom tract is completely
covered by this outer layer, with sliding bam-
boo elements over the rectangular openings.
Set in front of the large areas of glazing to the
living space, the bamboo functions as a solar
and visual screen. Internally, the soffits, con-
crete columns, and the walls, in part, are also
lined with bamboo. These strongly textured
surfaces are contrasted with visually re-
strained areas such as the dark slate flooring
and the ricepaper to some of the walls.
At the centre of the house is a pavilion-like
bamboo lounge. Set within a loggia and sur-
rounded by water, it is reached via two stonewalkways. Here, the boundaries between in-
ternal and external space are dissolved. The
continuous flat roof drawn over the entire
house is glazed in the area of the loggia, con-
veying a sense of the open sky.

Speaking about the quality of his exposed
concrete walls, Tadao Ando once said that
they were abstract, without physical pres-ence; only the space they enclosed conveyed
any real sense of being. This feeling of ab-
straction is also communicated by the present
house and studio in Mnsterland, where the
exposed concrete structure and strict modu-
lar order mutually reinforce each other.
Through its form and use of materials, the
house maintains a certain distance from the
traditional buildings around it. For the occu-
pants, however, it is a private refuge that has
strong links with nature.
In addition to the living areas, the two-storey
ensemble contains two courtyards that form
transitional zones between internal and exter-
nal space and that establish a dialogue with
nature through two large openings. The wallsaround the courtyards, which lend the build-
ing its elongated form, are in exposed con-
crete like those of the main cubic volume.
The house has a reinforced concrete structure
with powder-coated aluminium windows. The
flat roof is raised in the middle to create the
requisite room height internally, but the metal
roof construction is largely concealed by a pe-
ripheral parapet wall. Both the layout of the
house on plan and the formwork joints are
based on a modular grid, which is used to ar-
ticulate the entire building and is legible in the
walls and floor. Outwardly cool in appearance
and somewhat aloof, despite the large areas
of glazing, the house radiates a sense of
warmth internally. Although the cubic forms ofthe facade are continued in the interior, the
materials and colours obviate any sense of
hardness. The walls and ceilings are largely
plastered and painted in soft beige and white
tones that harmonize with the dark brown of
the wengparquet and the ash doors. A
single-flight sheet-steel staircase links the two
floors of the house. The exposed concrete
balustrades to the stairs and gallery merge
homogeneously with the rest of the construc-
tion and are topped by sheets of glass. The
sole accentuation in the restrained, almost
neutral, interior is the blue staircase wall.

Dachumbau in Mnchen
Attic Conversion in Munich
Architekt:
Steffen Bathke, Mnchen

This attic flat for a father with two children is
nearly 100 m2in area and contains two bed-
rooms and a bathroom, which are dividedfrom the open living and kitchen areas by a
wall of cupboard units. There is also a gallery
level with sleeping and working space. The
floor of the gallery is just high enough to allow
a view out over the rooftops to the towers of
the historic city centre. A separate flat of simi-

ated in the other half of the attic.
During the war, the upper storeys of this listed
building had been destroyed and were recon-
structed with simple means. The existing roof
structure was no longer serviceable and has
now been completely replaced. The new pur-

Weinprobierstube in Fellbach
Wine Tavern in Fellbach
Architektin:
Christine Remensperger, StuttgartMitarbeiter:
Johannes Michel
Tragwerksplaner:
Dieter Seibold, Fellbach
Trottenkammer, so nennen die Fellbacher
die neue Weinprobierstube des ortsansssi-
gen Familienbetriebs.
ben zu Most getreten, diese Ttigkeit be-
zeichnet man als Mosttrotte. Der Gewl-
bekeller im unteren Geschoss diente bereits
vor dem Umbau als Veranstaltungsort fr
Weinfeste. In den mit 2,05 m zum Teil sehr
niedrigen Wirtschaftsrumen im Erdge-
schoss entstand nun ein Verkaufsbereich
mit Probierstube fr die kleine, aber erlese-
ne Auswahl der hauseigenen Weine. Ent-
Prior to its conversion, this timber-framed
house, dating from 1805, was used for wine-
making, and the vaulted cellar was the scene
of wine festivals. On the ground floor, which
has a room height of only 2.05 m in part, a
sales area with a space for sampling wine has
been created. The building was gutted, and
the walls were lined with shelving and cup-
board elements that even out irregularities in
the structure. Oiled oak was used for the fur-
nishings and fittings as a reminiscence of theold oak wine casks. The floor is uniformly fin-
ished with a polished screed, which accentu-
ates the flowing, harmonic quality of the
sequence of spaces from the higher shop
entrance, down the broad stairs to the cellar.

Hier entstanden in
den letzten Jahren unzhlige kleine Lden
und Bars, die versuchen, sich gegenseitig
an Orginalitt und morbidem Charme zu
bertreffen.
szenigen Atmosphre. Die Wnde sind
uneben belassen und mit einem goldenen
Anstrich versehen. Nur durch die Zylinder
dringt punktuell vorwiegend elektrisches
Situated in a dark alleyway, this small shop is
distinguished by its singular, colourful interior
fittings, which may be glimpsed through theperforated entrance screen. Clothes rails wind
through the tight internal space, while red
metal cylinders in the floor create a link with
the basement, acting as light and air wells,
or as display points and showcases. Each of
the curved metal elements has an ornamental
surround in the floor, formed when the open-
ings were bored. The ground floor, with its
bright, colourful atmosphere, is contrasted
with the cave-like, funky basement, where
the walls were left in an uneven state and
painted gold. The lower space is lighted
largely artificially solely through the cylinders.

2003 5 Werbeagentur in Tokio 2
Two main objectives dominated the design of
these offices, which are located in an
18-storey existing high-rise block. One wasthe creation of ideal spatial conditions for the
functions performed in an advertising agency;
the other was the presentation of the compa-
ny through a spatial concept and image
aimed at various target groups.
A free layout of the production areas was fa-
cilitated by the fact that the office tower, in
which the agency occupies five storeys,
bridges a railway line. As a result, there is a
column-free area 60 15 m in extent on each
floor. The direction of the railway tracks is indi-
cated by the line of the internal wall that ex-
tends over the length of the building.
The aim of the design was to maximize com-
munication and the spontaneous exchange of
information between employees. All membersof the staff, including the directors of the
agency, work non-territorially at so-called
workstations laid out along the window front
of the large space.
Parallel to the long wall is a tract with open
workplaces and glazed, compartment-like dis-
cussion spaces, where it is possible to with-
draw and work in quieter conditions when
necessary. This zone is defined on every floor
by a curving strip that forms the ceiling in cer-
tain areas and the walls in others, or which is
drawn out to create a raised stage with tiers
of step-like seating.
Four storeys occupied by the agency are the-
matically linked with a particular target group
with women, men, the family and the com-munity. This division finds expression in the
varied design and use of the curved strip. For
example, on the floor devoted to the theme of
women, a hairdressing and cosmetic salon
has been incorporated, while the floor desig-
nated to the family accommodates a kitchen
and launderette. Here, new products are
tested and demonstrated.
The surface of the strip is executed in a differ-
ent material on each floor. On the storey for
men, it is in steel; on the storey for the family,
it is in wood. The floor for women is distin-
guished by a pink PVC snakeskin-look.

This sushi bar was superimposed on an ex-
isting single-storey octagonal, domed pavilion.
A 14 14 3.5 m box-like enclosure was
erected over the former structure, so that it
now conjures the image of an Oriental lantern.
The facade, hovering over a transparent glass
plinth, consists of prefabricated translucent
fibreglass elements and resembles a Japa-
nese paper screen. The building is crowned
by a strip of green-patinated copper panels.
The eastern facade can be fully opened, al-lowing the internal space to extend out to an
external terrace. The luminous-red soffit radi-
ates out through a cruciform central roof light,
bathing the space around the restaurant in a
reddish glow at night.

Kofferrollen hallt durch die Gnge, Laut-

atmosphre steht nun ein Museum, aufge-

Holland Boulevard zwischen Flugsteig E

macht es auf sich aufmerksam und ldt,
ber knallroten Teppich im Eingangsbe-
reich, zum kostenlosen Besuch ein.
Das kleine Museum wurde im Dezember
vergangenen Jahres von Prinz Willem-
Alexander offiziell erffnet.
Ne-
ben niederlndischer Malerei des 17. Jahr-
hunderts zeigen kleine Wechselausstellun-
gen wie etwa Dutch Design Glass from
the 1920s aktuelle Kunst.
In die uere Fassadenhlle eingelassene
Bildschirme verweisen, Werbeplakaten hn-
lich, auf die Produkte des Museumsshops.
Dieser soll die Ausstellung ber seine Um-
stze finanzieren.
ums. Vom Shop aus fhrt eine Treppe aus
Stahl mit Glasbrstung hinauf in die 160
Quadratmeter groe Ausstellung. Ein metal-
lener Vorhang trennt den Raum in zwei Be-
reiche. Die Kunstwerke hngen, eingepasst
in Vibrationsdmpfer, hinter 15 Meter langen
Glaswnden in konstant gehaltenem Klima

besteht aus Stahltrgern, die Verkleidung
aus gold eloxierten Aluminiumblechtafeln.
Die nur mit horizontalen Aluminiumlamellen
verkleideten Querseiten lassen Umgebungs-
lrm ungehindert durchdringen.Sptestens beim Aufrufen des eigenen Na-

an seinen Flug erinnert. Ganz in die Welt der
Malerei zu versinken, ist an einem Flughafen
eben doch nicht mglich.

2003 5 Flughafen-Museum in Amsterdam 2
The wheels of suitcases echo through the
corridors. Loudspeakers announce flight
schedules and delays, or inform passengersabout checking in. In the midst of this hectic
atmosphere at Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam,
a museum has been created in a yellowish-
gold box raised above the ground on the
Holland Boulevard between gates E and F.
Rembrandt Is Here posters advertise this
new facility, and visitors are invited to enter
free of charge over a bright red carpet in the
entrance area. This small museum was offi-
cially opened in December 2002 by Prince
Willem-Alexander and affords a glimpse of
Dutch art to stopover passengers who may
not be familiar with the Netherlands.
Realized as a joint project sponsored by theairport and the Rijksmuseum, the gallery
presents ten exhibits from the museums col-
lection. In addition to 17th-century Dutch
painting, modern art will be on display in small
temporary exhibitions such as Dutch Design
Glass from the 1920s. Computers inform vis-
itors about the exhibits from the Rijksmuseum,
and video screens in the outer facade function
like posters to advertise the products available
in the museum shop, which is meant to fi-
nance the cost of the exhibitions.
A steel staircase with glass balustrades leads
up from the shop to the 160-square-metre
exhibition area, which is divided into two partsby a metal curtain. The indoor climate and
lighting are maintained at a constant level,
and the works of art are mounted in vibration-
absorbing elements behind 15-metre-long
glass walls. The outer enclosure is con-
structed of steel beams. It is rounded at the
corners and clad externally with golden metal
sheeting. Integrated within it is the electrical
installation. The end walls are closed solely by
aluminium louvres, which means that ambient
sounds can enter the exhibition space unhin-
dered. At the latest, when passengers hear
their own names called out and are reminded
of their flight, they will have to overcome theirenthusiasm for art: it is not possible to surren-
der oneself entirely to the world of painting in
an airport.
