Project Problem:

1. Having your hands full in the

rain with no way to hold your

umbrella.

2. Losing your umbrella

because you have no place to

store it.

Page 3: Detachable umbrella caddy

Possible Solutions:

Bad:

• Don't go out in the rain...ever. *

• Go out, lose your umbrella, get soaked,

catch pneumonia, then DIE! *

• Tape an umbrella to your arm. **

Good:

• Find a way to attach your umbrella

to a backpack for easy carrying and

storage. *****

Page 4: Detachable umbrella caddy

Concept #1:

Description: An umbrella tube built within the

bag with a simple mechanism to extend the

umbrella upon pulling a cord.

Pros:

• Umbrella can theoretically never get lost, losing umbrella nearly

impossible

• Umbrella when deployed, holds securely on users back, enabling

"hand free" usage.

• Umbrella "pops up" from internal storage tube once released utilizing

a compressed spring on bottom.

Page 5: Detachable umbrella caddy

Concept #1:

Cons:

• If umbrella breaks, then you need to buy a new backpack. Same with

the backpack becoming disabled, rendering umbrella useless.

• Backpack must be worn when using umbrella, which for it to be of

convenience, the backpack must be worn at all times.

• No choice of umbrella or backpack, both come as one piece.

• No interchangeable parts if the mechanics of the pop up umbrella

become disabled, rendering concept useless.

Page 6: Detachable umbrella caddy

Concept #2

Description: Same concept only had a

mechanical drive and a push button Pros:

• The button that triggers the umbrella to open would be easy to use.

• The button would be attached to the either backpack straps (on the

top).

• The button and the umbrella would be visible in the outside of the

backpack, and the springs and other type of metal would be in the

inside. Sown inside similar to a pocket and the pocket would have a

zipper attachment in order for the button contraption to stay put and

easy to get to.

Page 7: Detachable umbrella caddy

Concept #2

Cons:

• Positioning the umbrella so it does not hit the customer in the face.

• The springs being damaged quickly.

• The button itself jamming and not working.

It would be a good product until one thing doesn’t function , which leads

to the whole product non-functioning and having to replace it all.

Our Winning Concept:

The Detachable Umbrella

Caddy

Description: A tube-like device with straps that can be

attached to a backpack and stores and extends a

umbrella.

Pros:

• Is separate from backpack.

• Can be used with a backpack already owned.

• Can cheaply be replaced without having to buy a new backpack

Cons:

• Manual extension required

• May be awkward with some backpacks

• Good positioning required for umbrella to hold perfectly upright

Page 10: Detachable umbrella caddy

How it works:

• ll

• Umbrella slides into the waterproof holder.

• Caddy straps around the backpack straps.

• Straps are adjustable so it can accommodate

short or tall umbrellas.

Page 11: Detachable umbrella caddy

Our decision making process:

• Brainstorming

• We decided that the criteria for our concept would

be convenient and cost effective

• A few concepts were discussed

• We discussed the pros and cons of each concept

• We then incorporated the best ideas from these

concepts into our product design

• Changes were made as problems were discovered

during course of development

• A final design was agreed upon

Page 12: Detachable umbrella caddy

Conflict Resolution

• The team utilized the consensus method for the

resolutions of conflict, which for team were few.

• Main conflict was with decision of what type of

concept to go with, many ideas were proposed, but

a consensus decided on the Umbrella Caddy.

• Each team member contributed to their own ideas

within the concept, with the best idea chosen for the

primary concept, again utilizing the consensus

method.

• Overall, the team worked well together, with little to

no major disagreements over the three alternate

concepts and the primary concept.

Page 13: Detachable umbrella caddy

Team Lessons Learned

• How to build consensus to come up with a solution

to a problem

• How to select the best ideas to come up with a good

concept design

• How to work effectively and quickly to get a project

done

• The importance of following rules and guidelines to

keep meetings on track and moving smoothly

• The ability to change the design as problems are

discovered with initial concept design

• The importance of working together to come up

with a design quickly and effectively

Team Leader:

Marc Flanery

Work Done:

Contributed to concept #1 design and layout;

contributed to presentation, gathering of materials

and assembly for the binder.

Lessons Learned:

Coming up with a new concept from scratch proved

troublesome considering the time constraints for

each meeting. Once concept was agreed upon,

making the concept a reality was extra difficult and

challenging considering the uniqueness of the idea.

Jared Pieknik Roles

Work Done:

Came up with concept #3 and drawing. Helped

with the presentation and concepts.

Attended every meeting.

Lessons Learned:

4 meetings to come up with a problem, solution

and concepts was a short period of time.

Agenda was very useful in helping us reach

our goal.
