Pg.1 Destroying Idols Scripture Reference: 2 Kings 22-23:30; 2 Chronicles 34-36 Bible Background: Unlike his evil grandfather and father, King Josiah tried to lead the people of Judah back to God. When Josiah ordered the temple of the Lord cleaned and repaired, the high priest found the Book of the Law that had been lost and forgotten. During Josiah’s reign idols and places of false worship were destroyed in the temple and throughout the kingdom. Purpose of Activity: Josiah’s actions were severe because God is Holy and only He is worthy of worship. There were even idols in the temple area. It was an outrage that idols were being worshipped throughout Judah and he was determined to restore true worship. This activity is a way for children to physically relate to Josiah’s determination to make things right. To Prepare: 1. Before class print out pictures of idols (or draw your own) and tape the pictures to old empty cardboard boxes. Also print out the scroll picture but do not tape it on a box. 2. Tell the story and be careful to explain the meaning of key words such as “scroll”, “God” and “idol”. You can use the pictures on the boxes to illustrate each. 3. Set the idol worship pictures around the room as you continue to talk about how the people of God had started worshipping idols. There was incense. There were even statues of horses by the entrance to the temple (2 Kings 23:11). 4. Designate one part of the room “the temple” and hide the scroll picture there. I laid out old carpet squares and hid the scroll underneath them. You could do the same thing with old newspapers or practically anything. To Do: 1. One at a time the children search for the scroll. I made a game of it where each turned over one carpet square. 2. When the scroll is found the child reads and explains what it says: “Worship only God. Do not worship idols.” 3. Then the child gets to “destroy” the idols like Josiah did. 4. You can set the game up and play it again a number of times so everyone has a turn. 5. This game will be active and the children will find it fun. Be sure to finish by focusing on why this was done. Gather the children in a circle to quietly sit and talk about God’s Holiness. Lead the children in a prayer of praise and worship of God. Alternative Application You could continue with the application by taping other pictures over the idols. If we treat other things as more important than God then they can become our idols (sports, money or beauty).

Destroying Idols

Scripture Reference:

2 Kings 22-23:30; 2 Chronicles 34-36

Bible Background: Unlike his evil grandfather and

father, King Josiah tried to lead the people of Judah

back to God. When Josiah ordered the temple of

the Lord cleaned and repaired, the high priest found

the Book of the Law that had been lost and

forgotten. During Josiah’s reign idols and places of

false worship were destroyed in the temple and

throughout the kingdom.

Purpose of Activity: Josiah’s actions were severe because God is Holy and only He is worthy of

worship. There were even idols in the temple area. It was an outrage that idols were being

worshipped throughout Judah and he was determined to restore true worship. This activity is a way

for children to physically relate to Josiah’s determination to make things right.

To Prepare:

1. Before class print out pictures of idols (or draw your own) and tape the pictures to old

empty cardboard boxes. Also print out the scroll picture but do not tape it on a box.

2. Tell the story and be careful to explain the meaning of key words such as “scroll”, “God” and

“idol”. You can use the pictures on the boxes to illustrate each.

3. Set the idol worship pictures around the room as you continue to talk about how the people

of God had started worshipping idols. There was incense. There were even statues of

horses by the entrance to the temple (2 Kings 23:11).

4. Designate one part of the room “the temple” and hide the scroll picture there. I laid out old

carpet squares and hid the scroll underneath them. You could do the same thing with old

newspapers or practically anything.

To Do:

1. One at a time the children search for the scroll. I made a game of it where each turned over

one carpet square.

2. When the scroll is found the child reads and explains what it says: “Worship only God. Do

not worship idols.”

3. Then the child gets to “destroy” the idols like Josiah did.

4. You can set the game up and play it again a number of times so everyone has a turn.

5. This game will be active and the children will find it fun. Be sure to finish by focusing on why

this was done. Gather the children in a circle to quietly sit and talk about God’s Holiness.

Lead the children in a prayer of praise and worship of God.

Alternative Application

You could continue with the application by taping other pictures over the idols. If we treat other

things as more important than God then they can become our idols (sports, money or beauty).
