Founded as part of Rowley in 1639, Georgetown has long

been proud to stand alone as an independent, self-sufficient

    town with a unique history.

Early settlers found rich pasture land in the area of Penn

Brook, near Elm Street and Union Cemetery. Homes and a vil-lage quickly sprang up along this corridor. It became known as

the West Parish of Rowley, but by 1838, the village had created

its own identity and was witnessing a population boom. Resi-

dents successfully petitioned to split off as a separate town.

By then, industry was beginning to thrive in the once-

agricultural town, with more than a dozen mills producing a

variety of products. And, like other villages in the area, shoe-making became a lucrative trade that employed many people

in several factories around town, as well as some who built

small shoe shops in their yards.

Georgetowns gradual growth saw another boom in the

mid-1800s, when a rail line was laid through the town and

    Georgetown became a stop

    on the new mass-transit sys-

tem. The old line has long

    since been abandoned, but

its route can be seen clearly

and is being considered asthe path of a rail trail that

    will link Georgetown to

    Newburyport.

    Groveland wasincorpo-

    rated 1850, after spending

the 17th and 18th centuriesattached to Rowley and

    Bradford.

    The town changed during

    the 20th century, moving

from a shoe industry and tex-

    tile manufacturing commu-

nity into a residential town.During the 1960s, the most

    dramatic changes occurred

    as numerous housingdevel-

    opments were built.

    Groveland has an open

    Town Meeting form of govern-

    ment and residents take pride

in their schools: the Dr. Elmer

    Bagnall Elementary School

    and Pentucket Regional Mid-

    dle and High Schools.

    The town offers baseball

and soccer fields, basket-ball courts, picnic areas and

    parks, and boating facilities

    on the Merrimack River all

    of which are very popular

    with adults and children alike.

BROCKLEBANK MUSEUM,GEORGETOWN HISTORICAL SOCIETY108 East Main Street

Open: every Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m.,July through Columbus Day; $5 foradults/$3 for seniors and students

The historical societys property con-tains several buildings, chief amongthem the Brocklebank-Nelson-Beecherhouse, believed to have been built inthe late 1600s. The land on which thehouse stands was granted in 1661 toSamuel Brocklebank, a surveyor whohad come from England to Rowley as achild in 1638. The house remained in theBrocklebank family until 1754, when itwas acquired by Dudley Tyler for use

as a tavern. The museum house contains numer-

ous artifacts related to Georgetownshistory, including the Haunted MealChest, which gained its unearthly repu-tation from its alleged ghostly movementwhenever a servant girls dress brushedagainst it. The phenomenon lasted only afew weeks but made a lasting impressionon all who witnessed it. Visitors can lookdown through a viewing panel to the cellarwhere a secret slave hole was built dur-ing the days of the Underground Railroad. This room is believed to have been con-structed by the Rev. Charles Beecher whowas a fervent abolitionist. Also on displayis an original slave collar similar to thoseworn by captured runaway slaves.

GOODRICH MASSACRE SITEOn Oct. 23, 1692, the only Indian raid

in what is now Georgetown occurred.

Benjamin Goodrich, his wife and twodaughters were killed, and a thirddaughter was taken captive. A signmarks the site.

ERIE 4 ENGINEErie 4 fire company, formed in 1854,

claims to be the oldest private fire bri-gade in the nation. Its name derives fromits pump engine, a used Hunneman Hand

Tub that was purchased by the men of thecompany. The name Erie No. 3 was paintedon the hand tub, and it was decided to adoptthe name, and as Erie was the fourth owner,to call both the hand tub and the associa-tion the Erie No. 4.

The hand tub is on display next tothe fire station, in a building with alarge glass wall that allows the engineto be viewed at all times of the dayand night.

Erie 4 is a privately owned, nonprofitcorporation and serves Georgetown asone of its two fire engine companies. Itsupstairs hall is available for rentals.
