description

On April 12th, C/D/H presented on VDI to a group of operations and technology professionals at the 2012 BEST banking conference. Attendees learned an overview of virtualization and VDI, the benefits, the competitors, and how to get started. View C/D/H's Smackdown slide deck for a side-by-side comparison of the top virtual desktop solutions from VMware, Citrix, and Microsoft. C D H Why Virtualize?

… it depends who you ask!

“Centralized Control!”

“ServerProvisioning!”

“Business Continuity!”

“Disaster Recovery!”

“Reduce CapitalCosts!”

“Energy Efficiency!”

C D H User Perspective: John Anderton

Page 16: Desktop Virtualization Smackdown

C D H How VDI helps John

• A virtualized desktop sits next to virtualized servers in the data center at the physical layer for maximum speed.

• A virtualized application can run even faster than a typical application installation.

• VDI clients can flip between several open desktops at once with multiple monitor support for up to 4 monitors.

C D H User Perspective: Theo

Page 18: Desktop Virtualization Smackdown

C D H How VDI helps Theo

• VDI allows desktops to be refreshed every day upon logon from a central ‘Gold’ image (snapshot).

• A user’s virtual desktop is their own. If they want to customize it or try to break it, they are given the power to do so. It’s easy to rebuild and refresh. No more rebuilding operating systems from scratch.

C D H User Perspective: Whistler

Page 20: Desktop Virtualization Smackdown

C D H How VDI helps Whistler

• Enhanced VDI protocols deliver multimedia content faster than RDP for a maximum user experience.

• USB redirection is available from the client to virtual desktop.

C D H Competitors!

Page 22: Desktop Virtualization Smackdown

C D H VMware

• Company formed in 1998 in Palo Alto, CA with just 20 employees

• VMware Workstation – Released in 1999• VMware GSX Server – Released in 2001• First bare-metal hypervisor with ESX Server• VMware ESXi released (first free hypervisor)

– now simply called VMware Hypervisor• Latest release is vSphere 5.0 (Summer 2011)

Page 23: Desktop Virtualization Smackdown

C D H VMware View Suite (Desktop)

• December 2008 – Virtual Desktop Infrastructure 3.0

• November 2009 – VMware View 4.0– Key features: View Composer, View

Connection Server, ThinApp, PCoIP• July 2011 – VMware View 5.0

- Key features: PCoIP optimization controls, Persona Management

C D HBut which product is best?

What about VMware?

• The most stable, scalable and proven virtual architecture, chosen by most IT departments

• Simple, single-pane of glass management with VCenter and View Manager

• Easily the most expensive option with licensing

• Requires an existing enterprise architecture for success

Page 26: Desktop Virtualization Smackdown

C D H Citrix

• Been around since 1989• First in application streaming with WinFrame,

then MetaFrame, now XenApp• Products

– XenDesktop– XenApp– XenServer– NetScaler– Access Gateway– Provisioning Services

Page 27: Desktop Virtualization Smackdown
Page 28: Desktop Virtualization Smackdown

C D HBut which product is best?

What about Citrix?

• XenDesktop can run on top of Citrix XenServer, Microsoft Hyper-V and even VMware vSphere

• A easy option for IT environments that are familiar with Citrix

• Expensive licensing• Complex management overhead

Page 29: Desktop Virtualization Smackdown

C D H Microsoft

• Virtual Machines on Hyper-V• Terminal Services – Now Remote Desktop

Services (RDS)• VDI solution uses familiar Microsoft Technologies

– 2008 R2 Clustering– 2008 R2 Hyper-V– Remote Desktop Gateway– Remote Desktop Session Host– Remote Desktop Protocol 7 with Windows 7

Page 30: Desktop Virtualization Smackdown

C D H Microsoft

• Remote Desktop Sessions or Virtual Desktops

• RemoteApp • RD Web Access• RemoteFX for user experience• Partners with Citrix

Page 31: Desktop Virtualization Smackdown

C D H Microsoft Architecture

Page 32: Desktop Virtualization Smackdown

C D HBut which product is best?

What about Microsoft?

• The least expensive VDI solution• Attractive to small business IT – uses

familiar concepts like Microsoft Clustering, Hyper-V, and SCVMM

• Least proven solution – VDI features are still trying to ‘catch up’ to Citrix and VMware, who are years ahead

Page 33: Desktop Virtualization Smackdown

C D H Comparison Matrix

Page 34: Desktop Virtualization Smackdown

C D H But regardless of the solution...

• A VDI solution requires a significant investment• The ROI for VDI takes time to appear – perhaps

not even until next hardware refresh cycle• A Virtual desktop environment is easier to

manage• VDI offers significant OpEx and CapEx savings

over time when it is implemented correctly• “VDI fits every customer, but not for every

desktop”

Page 35: Desktop Virtualization Smackdown

C D H How do I get started?

• All three solutions offer free, feature-filled trials

• Start with a proof of concept– Each vendor supplies the detailed steps

necessary to build one• Choose a vendor based on your

requirements• Request the services of a consultant
