The Market Environment in 2014
1. 2014 promises to be a year in which economic policies will make
themselves felt, with an anticipated surge in demand in the first-half and a
rally in demand towards year-end
The economic policies of the administration of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who came into office at the
end of 2012, have resulted in rising share prices and a depreciating yen, making 2013 a year in which the
economy made a turn for the better. 2014 is likely to be evaluated as a year in which the effects of
government economic policies made themselves felt. As the consumption tax rate is due to be hiked from
5% to 8% from April there is expected to be a surge in overall consumer demand prior to the increase.
Although there is a strong possibility that immediately after the consumption tax hike there will be a
temporary recoil effect on demand, a rally is expected towards the end of the year due to improved
unemployment rates, rising share prices and increased bonuses, etc., as improvements in corporate results
trickle down through the wider economy.
It is projected that the yen will remain on a gentle depreciative trajectory, which will provide a firm
footing for Japanese exporters to boost their corporate results, and will also encourage further increases in
overseas visitor numbers to Japan.
In terms of consumer sentiment, there are concerns among consumers about the increase in the
consumption tax rate and the impact of rising commodity prices caused by high oil and raw materials costs
will have on day-to-day life. However, there is still a desire that has continued since the Great East Japan
Earthquake to “do what I want whenever I am able to do it,” and therefore the pattern of varied consumption
that has been seen until now is likely to further develop, with people seeking to save in some areas and spend
robustly in others.

2. There will be one less long weekend with the Golden Week holiday period
split into two distinct halves
In terms of how the dates fall for long weekends in 2014, excluding Golden Week and the
year-end/New-Year period, there will be seven long weekends. Although this is one less than in 2013, it is
two more than in 2012. Golden Week this year falls in a similar pattern to 2013, with three working days in
the middle from (Wed) April 30 to (Fri) May 2, meaning that the holiday period will be split into a three-day
weekend at the beginning and a four-day weekend at the end. It is anticipated that people will choose to
-3-
travel either at the beginning or the end of Golden Week, traveling to relatively close destinations. The
traditional O-bon (“Buddhist All Souls”) break runs from (Wed) August 13 to (Fri) August 15, linking
conveniently to the weekend of August 16 and 17 and the number of people using this extended period is
likely to increase over the previous year.

3. Although concerns about the consumption tax increase remain, desire
among senior travelers remains firm
There is a strong possibility that for a certain period following the consumption tax increase in April the
number of travelers and travel expenditure will stagnate. However, the results of a questionnaire survey
implemented by JTB Corp. in November showed differences depending on the age of respondents
concerning the intended number of domestic trips in 2014 and travel expenditure. Whereas 10.6% of
respondents in their 40s indicated that the “Number of trips will increase,” 16.0% of those in their 60s gave
the same response. Furthermore, concerning the impact of the consumption tax increase, 37.1% of
respondents in their 60s indicated that “Although I will be impacted it will not make a great difference to my
lifestyle,” compared with 21.1% of those in their 40s. Conversely, 28.0% of respondents in their 60s
indicated that “I am concerned about day-to-day life after the tax increase,” smaller than the 38.8% of people
in their 40s who gave the same response. Although it is possible that the generation that is dealing with
children’s education expenses and mortgage repayments may economize and save out of concerns for the
future, it is anticipated that consumption and desire to travel will remain robust among the senior generation.
Furthermore, according to estimates by the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research,
although the population of Japan in 2014 is expected to stand at approximately 126.95 million (a
year-on-year decrease of 300,000), the number of persons above the age of 65 is projected to reach 33.13
million, a year-on-year increase of 1.19 million. It is thought that the increasing number of seniors with a
strong desire to engage in consumption and travel will contribute to an increase in the cumulative number of
travelers in 2014 (year-on-year increase of 0.3%) and an increase in the average number of trips
(year-on-year increase of 0.02 times).

4. Air travel to become even more accessible thanks to increase in
international flight slots at Haneda Airport and expanding number of routes,
including LCC
In March 2014 the number of international take-off and landing slots at Haneda Airport is set to increase
from 60,000 to 90,000 annually. Low-cost carriers (LCC) Peach Aviation and Jetstar Japan will be joined by
Vanilla Air and Spring Japan, which will be inaugurating routes of their own. Air Asia is also aiming to
make a second attempt to enter the Japanese domestic market, so it is anticipated that there will be a total of
five LCCs operating in 2014. Furthermore, mainstays of the Japanese aviation industry like Skymark and Air
Do will be aiming to rally in 2014 and the increasing number of routes, service improvements and more
affordable prices should make air travel even more accessible to users.

5. Expanding presence of mobile terminals and SNS is changing the ways
people enjoy travel
Over the past year or so the rapid spread of smartphones and tablets has changed the way people use
travel-related information. Not only are people collecting information prior to travel, thanks to mobile
terminal access they are also actively collecting information during the course of their trips. Wearable
computers like the “Google Glass” that are attracting attention as the next big technology after smartphones
are likely to further accelerate the trend toward collecting information during travel and sending out
information via SNS. An important factor from now in further expanding the travel base will be to respond
to such questions as what information to provide to travelers, what information travelers should be
encouraged to send out themselves, and how to increase interest in travel of other linked-in persons.
In addition, although the proportion of purchases made via smartphone remains small, it is anticipated that
as services become more convenient there will be changes in the way people reserve and purchase products.

Prospects for 2014
Domestic Travel
Number of domestic travelers expected to increase 0.2% to 291.5 million and total
expenditure on domestic travel to increase 5.3% to 10,390 billion yen in 2014. The figures
for both the number of travelers and total expenditure are the highest since the 2008
financial crisis.
Looking at how long weekends fall in 2014 there will be one less than 2013. As the beginning and end of
the Golden Week holiday period are split by three working days it is anticipated that people will travel to
relatively close destinations.
Although there are concerns about a drop-off in demand following the increase in the consumption tax
rate, on the other hand there are also increasing choices relating to style of travel, including the spread of
LCC routes and room-only accommodation options. It is therefore thought that there will be more variation
in travel plans, with people choosing, for example, to travel to their destination cheaply by LCC and instead
pay more for luxury accommodation, or alternatively, stay in affordable business hotels or reserve rooms on
a room-only basis and instead enjoy a meal at a top-class restaurant, etc.
Average expenditure is forecast to rise by 5.0% to 35,640 JPY per person. This is due to such impacts as
the consumption tax increase, weakening yen and rising crude oil prices, and also moves predominantly by
the senior generation, who retain a strong desire for travel, to seek not only cheaper options, but also to take
high-quality holidays that will provide self-fulfillment.
・The rush to open luxury international brand hotels has begun in the run-up to 2020
A number of luxury hotel openings are scheduled for this year, including the Ritz Carlton Kyoto and Aman
Resorts’ hotel in Otemachi, Tokyo. It is anticipated that these openings will also create a buzz about
spending a relaxing stay in a luxury hotel.
・Urban-style leisure will also be a focus this year, with the opening of large-scale commercial facilities,
including “Abeno Harukas” in Osaka, and other facilities in Tokyo’s Yaesu and Toranomon districts
“Abeno Harukas,” Japan’s tallest building at a height of 300m, is scheduled to open in March 2014.
“Abeno Harukas” features a hotel, commercial facilities and an art museum among its various offerings, and
combined with the new opening of “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” at Universal Studios Japan®, the
city of Osaka is likely to attract attention in 2014. In Tokyo too, the rush of openings such as COREDO
Muromachi 2 and 3 in the Nihombashi/Yaesu districts, where redevelopment continues to advance, as well
as the opening of Toranomon Hills in the Toranomon/Shimbashi district, and the large-scale commercial
facility Ponte Grande TOKYO in the Senju district of Adachi Ward, are expected to boost trips to urban
areas.
・Increased opportunities for holidays at sea, as the large cruise liner “Diamond Princess” joins the
“Sun Princess” in sailings based from the Port of Yokohama
Last year the first casual cruise itineraries originating and concluding in Japan attracted the attention of
travelers. This year cruises are scheduled to set sail using the even larger “Diamond Princess” cruise liner,
-6-
meaning that there will be even more options for cruising holidays.
・Is the next big thing after “Train Girls” and “Mountain Girls” going to be “Space Girls”? Attention
focuses on increasing interest in star gazing
Given the large number of astronomical events that have occurred in recent years, such as the super moon,
total eclipse of the sun, meteor showers and comets, interest in astronomy is rising. This year too there are a
number of events that are likely to attract attention, including the Quadrantid meteor shower (Jan), the close
approach of Mars to Earth (Apr), total lunar eclipse (Oct) and the Geminid meteor shower. Accordingly,
there are likely to be substantial numbers of people who make trips to enjoy star gazing.
・Increase in travel products self-promoted by regions and communities are creating new markets
With consumer behavior diversifying and ways to enjoy travel also becoming ever more numerous, the
number of regions and communities promoting their own unique culture and traditions as destination
products is increasing. There have recently been active efforts made to promote the unique appeal of various
locations that have previously not been considered as tourism resources, including tours of local factory
clusters of small and medium manufacturing enterprises, and visits to civil engineering construction sites for
dams and roads, etc. There are also various examples of such tours and initiatives that have attracted
attention and gained popularity.
The internet is one of the big drivers behind such developments, as it is the internet that is the perfect
medium for putting small markets under the spotlight. If there are appealing tourism resources available,
then no matter how small the number of visitors, people with a high degree interest in such areas will
definitely make the effort to visit. Although each individual market may not be large in itself, overall they
possess a certain degree of scale. It is projected that moves will continue to spread to attract people to
tourism resources that leverage the various characteristics of regions and communities.
Overseas Travel
Number of overseas travelers expected to increase 2.1% to 17.8 million and total
expenditure on overseas travel to increase 5.2% to 4,870 billion yen.
A recovery from 2013 in overseas travel is forecast, given various factors, such as the increasing number
of airline seats, including on LCC routes; the fact that relations with neighboring countries are in the process
of settling down; and that the desire for travel will remain firm among the senior generation in particular.
However, the degree of increase is projected to be small, when considering the expected continuing increase
in overseas visitors to Japan and the overall balance in the supply volume of seats. Average expenditure per
person is projected to increase 3.0% to 273,600 JPY, given that mid- to long-haul destinations are expected
to continue to remain popular as was the case last year.
・International take-off and landing slots at Haneda Airport to increase from 60,000 to 90,000 annually.
New routes will also increase, including LCC routes, making overseas even more convenient
In addition to the increase in the number of international take-off and landing slots at Haneda Airport in
2014, the number of new LCC routes, focused in the Tokyo Metropolitan region, is also set to increase, and
it is therefore projected that travel options using airliners will increase.
-7-
For people in the busy professional classes, who seek convenience even with a little added expense, the
opportunities for overseas travel are expected to be boosted by an increase in travel options from Haneda
Airport. On the other hand, people who have time but seek to keep costs to a minimum also have the added
option of new LCC routes from Narita Airport. With this increasing variety of travel styles the base for
overseas travel looks set to grow.
・Rest and relaxation in Hawaiian and Southeast Asian resorts. Spending holidays as if you were living
a normal life as a resident at the destination
Looking at popular overseas travel destinations, the old favorites of Hawaiian and Southeast Asian resorts
maintain their popularity, with a trend towards relaxing holidays on Hawaiian Islands other than Oahu. In
addition, according to a “Survey on Intentions to Travel Overseas” implemented by the Japan Tourism
Marketing Co., there is a desire that is growing year-by-year to take one-center based holidays, with
travelers seeking to spend their time as if they were actually living their daily lives at the destination.
Travelers are increasingly using their smartphones while on holiday to collect and send out information, and
more and more are placing importance on accommodations where Wi-Fi is available. The environment for
internet access is therefore also important so that travelers can spend their holiday in a similar way to how
they spend their time in Japan.
On the other hand, however, the spread of digital devices such as smartphones and tablets is also giving
rise to the phrase “SNS fatigue,” due to the stressful aspects of the online world. While some people may
want to remain continuously online and be connected with their network of friends and acquaintances,
sending out and collecting information continuously, others seek to remove themselves completely from the
digital world while on vacation and rejuvenate themselves in a natural environment.
It can be expected, therefore, that 2014 will be a year in which holidays that can alleviate the various
stresses of modern living will be a focus of attention.
-8-
Overseas Visitors to Japan
Overseas visitors to Japan are expected to increase by 14.3% to 11.8 million. Further
increases in visitor numbers are expected over the record visitors recorded in 2013,
supported by the high popularity of travel to Japan and the gradual weakening of the
yen.
Due to deteriorating international relations the number of tourists from China decreased significantly from
the latter half of 2012 into 2013. However, signs of a recovery in visitor numbers from China started to
emerge at the end of 2013. In addition to projections that yen depreciation will continue into 2014, and also
given the high degree of interest in Japan, thanks to such factors as the inscription of Mt. Fuji and washoku
(Japanese cuisine) as UNESCO World Heritage, it is anticipated that the recovery trend will continue. In
terms of visitors by nation, although the number of tourists from Korea had been slow to recover from the
Great East Japan Earthquake, in 2013 numbers finally reached the level they were at prior to the disaster.
Furthermore, visitor numbers from Asian countries other than China and Korea, including Taiwan, Thailand
and Singapore, etc., are also demonstrating robust growth. Visitors from Europe and North America are also
climbing as economic recovery continues.
In 2014 although it is forecast that visitor numbers from Korea will remain on a par with 2013, a recovery
in visitor numbers from China and further growth from other regions such as Taiwan and Hong Kong is
expected. Visitors from Southeast Asia are also expected to continue to increase, although not at the level of
the previous year, which saw an uptick due to the introduction of visa exemptions and alleviation of visa
requirements. These factors lead to a projected increase in overseas visitors to Japan by 14.3% to 11.8
million.

Provisional Figures for 2013
Domestic Travel
・Number of domestic travelers estimated to increase 1.7% year-on-year to 290.9 million and for
average expenditure to increase 3.5% year-on-year to 33,940 JPY
2013 saw significant alleviation of the strong yen and also increased share prices, driven by
expectations of the economic policies of the Abe Administration. In June the Japan Revitalization
Strategy, a government growth strategy, was announced, leading to progress in various measures and
deregulation that have combined to put the economy on a gentle overall recovery track. Backed by the
improvements being felt in economic conditions, peak travel seasons such as Golden Week, summer
holidays and the year-end/New Year period all saw the highest numbers of travelers ever. Given the
shift to domestic holidays by people who had previously travelled overseas to short-haul destinations
such as Korea, as well as the fact that there were three more long weekends in 2013 than in 2012, it is
forecast that the number of travelers at times other than the peak seasons will also have increased.
As LCC routes have continued to increase from 2012, providing added options for domestic travel,
the effect has been to increase the number of people using air travel. In terms of specific destinations,
increases were seen in the following regions: the Sanriku region, which provided the stage for the NHK
serialized morning drama “Ama-chan”; Aizu, which was the setting for the NHK historical drama
“Yae-no-Sakura; Ise Grand Shrine (Mie) and Izumo Grand Shrine (Shimane), which both saw the
implementation of rare rituals and ceremonies; and Tokyo, which continues to be popular thanks to the
30th anniversary of celebrations for Tokyo Disney Resort® and Tokyo SKYTREE. Given this situation,
it is estimated that the number of domestic travelers will increase 1.7% year-on-year to 290.9 million
and average expenditure will increase 3.5% to 33,940 JPY.
Overseas Travel
・Number of overseas travelers estimated to decrease 5.7% year-on-year to 17.43 million and for
average expenditure to increase 5.4% year-on-year to 265,600 JPY
During 2013 there was an increase in visitors to relatively distant destinations in Asia, such as
Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore in Southeast Asia. There was also a robust increase in the number of
travelers heading to long-haul destinations such as Europe, led by travelers in their senior years.
However, the overall number of people traveling to China and Korea has decreased, due to the
continuing impact of deteriorating international relations since autumn 2012. Although travel to China
started to show signs of recovery from autumn onwards, travelers to Korea continue to decrease due to
such factors as the weakening yen prompted by Japan’s economic recovery and the appreciation of the
Korean won. Given this situation it is estimated that while the number of overseas travelers in 2013 will
have decreased by 5.7% year-on-year (from the record high figure of 18.49 million recorded in 2012),
average expenditure will have increased 5.4% to 265,600 JPY, reflecting the fact that fewer travelers
are visiting short-haul destinations.
Overseas Visitors to Japan
-11-
・Number of overseas visitors to Japan expected to exceed 10 million, rising 23.4% year-on-year to
10.32 million
2013 was a year in which there was a recovery in desire to travel to Japan, which had been negatively
impacted since the Great East Japan Earthquake. This was also accompanied by the depreciation of the
yen, brought on by the trend to economic recovery in Japan, and it is therefore estimated that visitor
numbers will significantly surpass the figures recorded in 2012. In July visa exemptions or
simplification of visa application procedures were introduced for nationals of five countries in
Southeast Asia (Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Indonesia), which provided another
boost to visitor numbers, leading to increased tourist arrivals from the countries of Southeast Asia.
Furthermore, from February to November, for ten consecutive months visitor numbers from Taiwan
have consistently broken previous records, leading to further increases in tourist arrivals.
Although the overall number of visitors from Korea is up on the previous year, since autumn the
monthly figures have been down on previous years. On the other hand, as Chinese visitors have
decreased since the deterioration in Japan-China relations in 2012 and figures for each month were
down on the previous year, from September onwards the year-on-year figures moved into positive
territory, demonstrating a recovery in visitor numbers. These factors lead to estimates that the number
of overseas visitors to Japan in 2013 will exceed 10 million for the first time ever, rising 23.$%
year-on-year to 10.32 million.
