Power in the Word

Grain Storehouse

There is power in the words ofthe Bible. To humbly give a Bibletext for an answer to a question isfar more effective than an answeryou can think up in your own mind.

“But sanctify the Lord God inyour hearts: and be ready always to

give an answer to every man thatasketh you a reason of the hope thatis in you with meekness and fear.”(I Peter 3:15).

What Saith the Scriptures?

“When a question was broughtto Christ, His answer was, ‘Have yenot read?’ ‘What saith the Scrip-tures?’ Christ could have answeredevery perplexing question broughtto Him, but He did not do this. Hedirected His questioners to thegreat storehouse of knowledge. Heknew that He could not always bewith them in human form, and Hedesired to teach them to make theWord their dependence. ‘Search theScriptures,’ He said. He referredthem to His own inspired Word, that when tempted by the enemy

they might meet him as He haddone, saying ‘It is written.’ Thus theenemy could be repulsed; for he hasno power over the one who relies onthe testimony of God’s Word.

“Of the Word of God, thepsalmist writes: ‘The entrance of thyword giveth light; it giveth under-standing to the simple’ (Psalm119:130). It is a light shining in adark place. As we search its pages, light enters the heart, illuminatingthe mind. By this light we see whatwe ought to be.”*

Joseph stored grain (the Wordis as seed) in a storehouse. We aretold:

“And that food shall be forstore to the land against the sevenyears of famine, which shall be inthe land of Egypt; that the landperish not through the famine.

“And the famine was over allthe face of the earth: And Josephopened all the storehouses, and soldunto the Egyptians; and the faminewaxed sore in the land of Egypt”(Genesis 41:36, 56).

ResearchWhy More Noble?

“The Bereans were com-mended as being more noble thanthose of Thessalonica, in that theyreceived the Word with all readi-ness of mind, and searched theScriptures daily. They did notsearch the Bible from curiosity, butthat they might learn in regard toChrist. Daily, they compared Scrip-ture with Scripture; and as theysearched, heavenly intelligenceswere beside them, enlighteningtheir minds and impressing theirhearts.”

“These were more noble thanthose in Thessalonica, in that theyreceived the word with all readinessof mind, and searched the scripturesdaily, whether those things were so”(Acts 17:11).

“We are to open the Word ofGod with reverence, and with asincere desire to know the will ofGod concerning us. Then the heav-enly angels will direct our search.God speaks to us in His Word. Weare in the audience chamber of theMost High, in the very presence ofGod. Christ enters the heart. TheHoly Spirit takes of the things of

God, and shows them to us. We seemore clearly the greatness of God’slove and the fullness of His salva-tion. We appreciate more fully Hisgracious design to make us partak-ers in the heavenly firm. We aredrawn into full sympathy with theplans of God. His secret is with us,and He shows us His covenant.”*

“ ‘Knock.’ We come to God byspecial invitation, and He waits towelcome us to His audience cham-ber. The first disciples who followedJesus were not satisfied with ahurried conversation with Him bythe way; they said, ‘Rabbi,...wheredwellest thou?...They came and sawwhere he dwelt, and abode with himthat day’ (John 1:38-39). So we maybe admitted into closest intimacyand communion with God. ‘He thatdwelleth in the secret place of theMost High shall abide under theshadow of the Almighty’ (Psalm91:1). Let those who desire theblessing of God knock and wait atthe door of mercy with firm assur-ance, saying, For Thou, O Lord, hast said, ‘Everyone that askethreceiveth; and he that seeketh find-eth; and to him that knocketh itshall be opened.’ ” **

“...The greatest victorieswhich are gained to the cause arenot by labored argument, amplefacilities, abundance of influence, and plenty of means; but they are

those victories which are gained inthe audience chamber with God,when earnest, agonizing faith layshold upon the mighty arm ofpower.”***

“The life of Christ, that giveslife to the world, is in His Word. Itwas by His word that Jesus healeddisease and cast out demons; by HisWord He stilled the sea and raisedthe dead; and the people bore wit-ness that His Word was with power. He spoke the Word of God, as Hehad spoken through all the prophetsand teachers of the Old Testament. The whole Bible is a manifestationof Christ, and the Saviour desires tofix the faith of His followers on theWord. When His visible presenceshould be withdrawn, the Wordmust be their source of Power. Liketheir Master, they were to live by‘every word that proceedeth out ofthe mouth of God.’ ”*

ResearchSustained

“As our physical life is sus-tained by food, so our spiritual lifeis sustained by the Word of God. Aswe must eat for ourselves in orderto obtain nourishment, so we mustreceive the Word for ourselves. Weare not to obtain it merely throughthe medium of another’s mind. Weshould carefully study the Bible, asking God for the aid of the HolySpirit, that we may understand HisWord. We should take one verse, and concentrate the mind on thetask of ascertaining the thoughtthat God has in that verse for us.We should dwell upon the thoughtuntil it becomes our own, and weknow ‘what saith the Lord.’ ”*

Remember our verse in Deu-teronomy 8:3—

“And he humbled thee, andsuffered thee to hunger, and fed theewith manna, which thou knewestnot, neither did thy fathers know;that he might make thee know thatman doth not live by bread only, butby every word that proceedeth out ofthe mouth of the Lord doth manlive.”

“For precept must be uponprecept, precept upon precept; lineupon line, line upon line; here alittle, and there a little” (Isaiah28:10).

Each word is important!

“In the Bible we have in clearlines the revelation of God’s charac-ter, of His dealings with men, andthe great work of redemption. Hereis open before us the history of pa-triarchs and prophets, and otherholy men of old. They were men‘subject to like passions as we are.’We see how they struggled throughdiscouragements like our own, howthey fell under temptation as wehave done, and yet took heart againand conquered through the grace ofGod; and, beholding, we are encour-aged in our strivings after righ-

teousness. As we read of the pre-cious experience granted them, ofthe light and love and blessing itwas their privilege to enjoy, and ofthe work they wrought through thegrace given them, the Spirit thatinspired them kindles a flame ofholy emulation in our hearts, and adesire to be like them in character—like them, to walk with God.”*

“Brethren, I count not myselfto have apprehended: but this onething I do, forgetting those thingswhich are behind, and reachingforth unto those things which arebefore” (Philippians 3:13).

“Teach me thy way, O Lord; Iwill walk in thy truth: unite myheart to fear thy name” (Psalm86:11).

Read good books.

Good reading prepares the mind for right thinking:

and from right thinking spring the noble character

and well-ordered life.

The Bible is the very best book to read!

We’ve traveled together, my Bible and I,When life had grown weary, and death e’en was nigh,But all through the darkness of mist and of wrong,I found thee a solace, a prayer, and a song.

Ah, no my dear Bible, revealer of light,Thou sword of the spirit, put error to flight; And still through life’s journey, until my last sigh,We’ll travel together, my Bible and I.

“Preciousnessof theBible”

Long ago, there was ahumble old man in the WestIndies who lived quite a longdistance from a certain mission-ary. But the man was exceed-ingly interested in learning toread the Bible, so he made thelong trip to the missionary regu-larly for a lesson. He was notmaking much progress in learn-ing to read, so his teacher, al-most disheartened, finally hintedhis fears that his labors would belost, and asked the man, “Hadyou not better give up trying?”“no, massa, me die;” replied thehumble man, and pointing hisfinger to John 3:16 (“God soloved the world, that he gave hisonly begotten Son, that whoso-ever believeth in him should notperish, but have everlasting life”),he said with touching emphasis,“It is worth all de labor, to beable to read dat one singleverse.”

Mark Your BiblePower of the Word

1. All the power of God is in HisWord.

Hebrews 4:12 – “For the word ofGod is quick, and powerful, andsharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asun-der of soul and spirit, and of thejoints and marrow, and is a dis-cerner of the thoughts and intents ofthe heart.”

2. God’s Word, hidden in theheart, will shield from sin.

Psalm 119:11 – “Thy word have Ihid in mine heart, that I might notsin against thee.”

3. Jesus used the Word to resistSatan’s temptations.

Matthew 4:8-11 – “Again, the deviltaketh him up into an exceedinghigh mountain, and sheweth him allthe kingdoms of the world, and theglory of them; And saith unto him,All these things will I give thee, ifthou wilt fall down and worship me.Then saith Jesus unto him, Get theehence, Satan: for it is written, Thoushalt worship the Lord thy God, andhim only shalt thou serve. Then the

devil leaveth him, and behold, an-gels came and ministered unto him.”

Psalm 33:6 – “By the word of theLord were the heavens made; andall the host of them by the breath ofhis mouth.”
