Credit(s) earned on completion of this course will be reported to AIA CES for AIA members. Certificates of Completion for both AIA members and non-AIA members are available upon request.
This course is registered with AIA CES for continuing professional education. As such, it does not include content that may be deemed or construed to be an approval or endorsement by the AIA of any material of construction or any method or manner ofhandling, using, distributing, or dealing in any material or product._______________________________________Questions related to specific materials, methods, and services will be addressed at the conclusion of this presentation.
Architectural masonry offers many different finishes and textures. Among those are: Glaze CMU glazed masonry units, Ground Face units, Filled and Polished Units, Shot Blasted Textured Units, Acoustical sound-absorbing units, and Limestone masonry units. Because of its modular nature, different concrete masonry units can be combined within the same wall to achieve variations in texture, pattern and color. Because of its durable nature, and use of less embodied energy, masonry is a very environmentally friendly building product. Masonry offers a variety of different facial applications that can greatly enhance the decorative appearance of the building. This program will also discuss the critical specification process of masonry for the architect. And, review anticipated life cycle costs of a masonry wall.
CourseDescription

Block Manufacturing
The highest quality units on the market are achieved through manufacturing process control of:
chemical compounding
raw blocks
laboratory color control
manufacturing procedures
Concrete Masonry UnitASTM Compliance
ASTM C90 - Standard Specification for Load-Bearing Concrete Masonry Units
ASTM C744 - Standard Specification for Prefaced Concrete Masonry Units
ASTM E119 - Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials
ASTM E514 - Water Penetration and Leakage through Masonry
ASTM E2432-05 - Standard Guide for the General Principals of Sustainability Relative to Buildings
5
Water Repellent Admixture
Approved water repellent admixture is added to the block at time of manufacture. The admixture …
yields an integral damp-proof wall system.
provides mold and moisture control and reduces the risk of efflorescence.
offers a denser, more uniform unit without altering the finished appearance of the block.
improves the bond strength and lasts the lifetime of the unit when incorporated into the mortar.

Filled & Polished Concrete Masonry Units
What’s the difference between
Ground Face
and
Filled and Polished
Concrete Masonry Units?
Filled & Polished blocks offer a tight, smooth terrazzo-like finish.
38
After the initial grinding process, the pores and interstices of the ground faces are filled with a cementitious grout to expose the variegated colors of the natural aggregates.
The exposed faces are polished smooth in a multi-stage polishing process.
A factory-applied clear satin gloss acrylic finish accentuates the natural beauty of the aggregates and provides moisture resistance.

Textured Face Block
46
Integrally colored concrete block with one or more faces uniformly shot-blasted to an even texture.
Textured block offers the enduring beauty of natural aggregates with the permanence of masonry.
Textured Concrete Masonry Units
Compared to Split Face, Textured block surfaces are …
more uniform
easier to lay up, and
provide a straighter site line to the building

Acoustical Concrete Masonry Units
Acoustical Concrete Masonry Units
Sound absorbing, structural concrete masonry units
Working much like a car muffler, the closed-end cavities resonate sound waves and convert them harmlessly to heat.

Type IVRF(Reinforced)
Type I Type IV
For broad-range sound absorption (gymnasiums, concert halls)
Absorbs unwanted noise within an area
Reduces the transmission of noise to an adjacent area
Particularly effective for absorbing difficult-to-control low frequency noise
