Welcome & Introduction
About Mobile Learning or mLearning?o According to a report titled ‘Information and Communication for
Development 2012: Maximizing Mobile’, published by the World
Bank, close to 75% of the world’s population has access to a
mobile telephone (World Bank, 2012)
About Mobile Learning or mLearning? Mobile technology has progressed rapidly since Motorola
introduced its first handheld cell phone in 1983
It has truly transformed lives in a way that was inconceivable.
In just 30 years, it has reduced in size (and weight) to fit in
consumers pockets, and does a lot more than what it was originally
expected to do.
What is Mobile Learning or mLearning?o It is learning facilitated through mobile devices without the
learner being obliged to stay at a fixed location.
o In the context of corporate organizations, mLearning can be
termed as the learning that takes place through planned
initiatives by the management, where employees are provided
access to knowledge through mobile devices that helps them do
their jobs better.
Conditions for mLearning For the purpose of this training, there are two significant
conditions for mLearning that you need to note.
o M-learning is referred to as learning that takes place when individuals, 1. Are not tied to any physical location for the purpose of
training.
2. Can access knowledge through portable and easy to carry devices at any time.
o The focus of mLearning is not so much on the device but on the mobility of the learner, and this mobility of the learner is the key factor that is to be considered when discussing about mLearning.
Factors Influencing M-learning Before implementing mLearning it is important to formulate a
strategy so that there is clarity in the outcome of the initiative.
The strategy should be able to clearly spell out why you need
mobile learning, what are you trying to achieve by implementing
mobile learning in your organization and create policy guidelines
that enable you to achieve the intended objectives.
Factors Influencing M-learning In order to achieve this, you also need to take into account certain
factors that will influence mLearning strategy of your organization.
Factors influencing
mLearning strategy
Objectives This course will give you four relevant tips you need to consider as
you begin to design your mobile course.
Objectives
At the end of this training you will get an insight on how to:
o Analyze the audience before developing the training.
o Focus on the audience learning requirements.
o Use instructional strategy to keep the learner engaged and
motivated.
o Decide on visual design strategy.
Analyze the audience
Understand their Learning requirements.
Understand how they will benefit from it.
Keep content short
Focus on the presentation.
o Break content to small manageable chunks.
o Replace long text with audio.
o Present content in an interactive way.
Decide on instructional strategy
Make sure the first slide is engaging. For example:
o For compliance and safety training use scenarios and case
studies.
o Use videos for product training, to demonstrate the workings of
the product.
o Reinforce learning with assessments.
Decide on visual strategy
Consider some design aspects, such as:
o Visuals and multimedia.
o Use PNG, JPG and GIF, and images that are supported by
mobile devices.
o Use fonts and colors that are easy on the eye.
This concludes Designing Mobile course.
