INTRODUCTION
Contemporaryurbandevelopmentdemandsnotonlyinnovativethinking,butalsohighlyskilledprofessionals.Astheworldcontinuestourbanize,thestressonnaturalresourcesrisesexponentially;climatechangeisexacerbatingapendingecologicalcrisis.Spatial,socialandenvironmentalinjusticesprevail.Thereistheurgentnecessitytosignificantlyoverhaulthemodes,morphologiesandtypologiesofsettlingontheplanet.Context-embeddedurbandesignanditsinterplaywithvisionaryenvironmentalplanningisnecessarytoaddresstheprecariousstageofdevelopmenthumanity,andmoreimportantlytheworld,nowfindsitself.
TheVietnamesefieldschoolinurbandesignandenvironmentalplanningaregroundedinthebeliefinbothstate-of-the-artdesignthinkingandpractices(includinginnovationfromthedisciplinesofengineering,transportation,andecology)andlocalintelligenceofplacesasexpressedinspecificappropriationoftechniquesandrelationtosocio-culturalpractices.Therapiddevelopmentofthecountrygoeshandinhandwithasimultaneousdestructionofitscountryside,whichclearlyneeds

criticalquestioning.Theultimategoalistoformulatealternativedevelopmentscenarios(fromtheterritorialtotypologyscales)thataregroundedinacriticalreadingoflandscapeasstructure.Inpracticalterms,thisgoalwillberealizedbyaniteratively,developed“AtlasofSettlementsandEnvironmentsofThuaThienHueProvinceinTimesofClimateChange.”
Intensivefieldwork,interpretativemappingandcriticalanalysisofdevelopmentdynamicsfeedanintensiveinterdisciplinarydesigncharrettewithinputsfromawidevarietyofstakeholdersandexpertisefromdifferentfields.Thefieldschool,asalearningbydoinglaboratory,buildscapacityinurbandesignandenvironmentalplanningforthebroadfieldofchallengesthatcontemporarylandscapesandurbanismarefacing.TheVietnameseInstituteofUrbanPlanning(basedinHanoiandundertheMinistryofConstruction)willbeaprimarypartner,togetherwithUniversityofArchitectureHoChiMinh(UAH),HueUniversityofForestry,andThuaThienDepartmentofConstruction,inordertogroundtheinvestigationsinon-goingprojectsanddiscussionswithvariousrelevantstakeholders.
ThuaThienHueProvinceisinVietnam’sNorthCentralCoastalregionwhichhostsawidevarietyofecologiesinextremelycloseproximitytooneanother.ThemajesticgeographyoftheprovincestretchesfromtheTruongSonMountainsborderingLaosinthewest(withalargenumberofnationalparksandreserves,includingthewell-knownBackMaNationalPark),tothebroadPerfumeRiverplainanditstributariesculminatingintheTamGianCauHaiLagoon(thelargestlagoonsysteminSoutheastAsia)andfinallytheEastSea.IthoststheUNECSOlistedHueImperialCity(includingitscitadel,rebuiltin-linewiththeNaraDocumentonAuthenticityfollowingtheAmerican-VietnameseWar)andanumberofroyalmausoleumsnestledinthelandscape.Theprovinceaswellhostsanastonishingtomblandscapeforancestorworship,particularlyinthedunes—wherethesecitiesforthedeadarecounterfiguresfortheever-growingurbanizationthatisrapidlytransforminghumanandnaturalecologies.Thequality,uniquenessandvastnessofthecultural(imperialaswellasvernacular)and(sequenceof)naturallandscapesoftheprovincerequireanintelligent,contextspecific,tailoringofinnovativedevelopmentconceptsfarawayfromconventionalurbanplanningwisdom.ThepremiseofthefieldschoolisthatabroadenednotionofNationalParkmightprovideasignificantstartingpointtoreconsidertheterritory’sdynamics.Thefieldschoolwilliteratebetweenintensivefieldwork(withVietnamesecolleagues)andinterdisciplinarydesigncharrettes.
ACADEMICCREDITUNITS&TRANSCRIPTS
CreditUnits:Attendingstudentswillbeawarded8semestercreditunits(equivalentto12quartercreditunits)throughouracademicpartner,ConnecticutCollege.ConnecticutCollegeisaprivate,highlyrankedliberalartsinstitutionwithadeepcommitmenttoundergraduateeducation.Studentswillreceivealettergradeforattendingthisfieldschool(seegradingassessmentandmatrix).Thisfieldschoolprovidesaminimumof160directinstructionalhours.Studentsareencouragedtodiscussthetransferabilityofcreditunitswithfacultyandregistrarsattheirhomeinstitutionpriortoattendingthisfieldschool.

COURSEOBJECTIVES
• Studentswillbeintensivelyengagedwithfieldwork,followingpre-definedsitesandwithagivenmethodology(derivedfromUrbanDwellingEnvironments,byH.Caminos,J.Turner,J.Steffian,Cambridge:MITPress,1969andvariousothermethodsdevelopedbylandscapearchitectsand

urbanists),inordertocriticallymapandinterpretconstraintsandopportunitiesforfuturedevelopmentintheTruongSonMountainsandtheTamGiang-CauHaiLagoon.
• TheywillstudythechallengesfacingsettlementsandenvironmentsinVietnam’seraofincreasedurbanizationandacceleratedclimatechangeandlearnaboutexistingstrategiesthatareusedtomakethemmoreadaptiveandrobust.
• Theywillhavetogainanunderstandingofthespecific,socio-cultural,ecologicalandpoliticalconditionswhichcanframethepossibilityofalternativedevelopmentparadigmsandhowtheycanbeappropriatedlocally.
• Studentswilllearnhowtoderivesuchanunderstandingofspecific,socio-cultural,ecologicalandpoliticalconditionsthrough,amongothers,liveexchangeswithstakeholders.Inthatsense,participantswillacquireexperiencewiththesettingupof/conductinglivinglabs.

PREREQUISITES
Thisfieldschoolisprimarilyintendedforstudentsinarchitecture,landscapearchitecture,urbanism,

urbandesignandurbanplanning.Thosefromenvironmentalplanningandotherrelevantfieldsareaswellwelcomed,butitmustbeunderstoodthatsketchingandphotographywillbeessentialcomponentsofthefieldworkandthattheweekofdevelopingdesignproposalsnecessitatesadesignbackgroundoratleastaninterestinandbasicskillsofdesign.
LEARNINGOUTCOMES
• StudentswillhavegainedanumberoffieldworktoolsandmethodologiesoflandscapeandurbanismtoengageinthelocalcontextoftheCentralHighlandsinVietnam.Moregenerallyspeaking,participantswillacquireexperiencewiththesettingupof/conductinglivinglabswithinthefieldsofurbandesignandenvironmentalplanning.
• Studentswilllearnhowtoderiveanunderstandingofspecific,socio-cultural,ecologicalandpoliticalconditionsthroughacombinationofliteraturereview,fieldworkandliveexchangeswithstakeholders.
• Theywillhaveunderstoodprinciplesoflandscapeurbanismanddevelopeddesignstrategiesattheterritorial,landscapeandurbanmorphologyandtypologyscales.Attentionwillfocusonadaptationtothepredictedconsequencesofclimatechange.Besidetheprinciplesoflandscapeurbanism,itsmaintechniqueswillbetransmitted.
• Studentsshouldlearntocriticallyreadtextsandforminsightsthatarerelevanttothecontemporarycontextandinstructiveforlandscapeurbanismsprojections.Similarly,studentswilllearntocriticallyreadmapsandothericonographicmaterialsandformconceptualizationsfromthesereadingsthatarerelevanttoprojectivethinkingconcerningsites.
• Studentswillincreasetheirdesigncapacityandespeciallylearnhowtoconsciouslyexploitthecapacityofdesigntointegratedifferent,disparateformsofinformationandknowledgeinprojectiveendeavors.
• Theywillco-produceanexhibitionandpublicationoftheirworkwhichwillserveasplatformfordiscussionwithlocalexpertsandleaders.Thiswillincreasethecapacityofstudentstoco-operate(withpartners,acrossdifferentdisciplinesandsectors)aswellasincreasetheirpresentationskills(includingthecapacitytoorganizeexchangewithstakeholdersduringandattheendofaresearchanddesigncycle).
