Site

The Concrete Lawn is a place where many pass through but not frequently thought about. The measurements and accurate drawing was done by Joyce, another team member. The site had buildings on all 4 sides, each with an opening and traffic be-tween them. The highest traffic was between the east and west ends of the site with walking as the main form of transporta-tion. There were however people starting and ending within the concrete lawn where they would have lunch or just relax.

Spatial Composition

The plan was the best way to show the intensity and shade of the individual com-partments formed by the intersecting patterns. Each triangle has an opposite, changing to similiar shade patterns during different times.

I wanted to explore the idea of repeated patterns through the frame, not by altering the patterns slightly but repeating in a 3 dimensional sense. I exper-imented it further by using 2d cards, for not only being easier to store and assemble in class but also to form a compund frame of two elements.

The section shows the repeated rectangles, as a result of the triangle being extruded. Density also does not matter as light will always reach to the bottom of the dense middle.

Landform

For Landform, I wanted to experience more about extrusions, and its functions. I wanted people to give and adopt their own funtions to their own use. I wanted to express smooth extru-sions with card, somewhat like the surface peeling off and the straight harsh extrusions with Balsa, similiar to cliffs. The shad-ow cast by the tower is to highlight the harsh extrusions further.

I wanted to experiment circulation in a single way, by making it easier to go up the slope and come down rather than the other way around. The inhabitants could still climb up the walls or the stairs, but it is not easy. Another cirulation experiment was the subtracted middle part of the site, like a dugged up canal, things flow in a set direction.

AssemblageWeek 6

Grafting was a modification of the element with another element, which then forms a new seperate element. I explored this concept through string, and a frame. Both elements will collapse without the other, therefore needing each other to become this element. I also added paper flowers on a single string, repeatedly but with different angles integrating spatial composition into the design as well as modification.

Narrative, Spatio-Temporal Collage “40Yearsago,thecountryofSibirwassplitintotwo.Eachhavingdifferentideologies,oneforallandtheotherallforone.Bothideologieshad made once brothers, to violent enemies. On a News channel, The leader of North Sibir asked, “why do u not believe in equality?” Which SouthSiberiaresponded,“WouldIbeahappymanifIsacrificedmyfreedomtochange, freedomtoact, forequality?”Bothnationsmayhavedifferentviews, butthey share a view of a whole Sibir. Thus, both nations were in constant war, racing for better weapons to destroy each other. And they had achieved it, only to realise that a whole Sibir, had became only a vision.” Debate to me is the heated exchange of ideas between two or more groups. By heated, it means chaos and conflict during these exchange. The image I chose was related to the cold war. Having a big piece in the middle to show the divides between the two group. Eventually converging into war and destruction.

Superimposition collage

As I overlay my SITE, ASSEMBLAGE plan and Spatio- Temporal Narrative Collage, the multiple systems seemed to come to a singular system. There is a main element that dominated the top left, as it slices through all the other elements. The Red, smooth, moves through and then merges into a chaotic cluster of shapes that juxtapose on the half right of the collage. The blue being less dominant than the red, felt like a liquid element, stretched through the other elements and the void. The black, was more solid than the blue but less dominant than the red, felt like a protective solid that seem-ingly wraps around itself and the other elements.

Experience

Metal can be used as a material to create a logical and systematic atmosphere. I continue to use union Lawn as the site as it is an educated and professional envi-ronment but the surrounding tress are exagerated in height to let as little light as possible. The lustrous qualities of metal will capture the little light and brighten up the site but not alot, therefore making it seem more open and breathable then the surrounding forest. The thin metal sheets have a serious mood to it, further enforcing the professional atmosphere. The folded sheets and the pyramids cre-ate private compartments for relaxing or working. The shiny face of the pyramid reflects light into the compartment, limiting the strong Australian sunlight for comfort purposes. The Mangrove tree is there to provide additional shade dur-ing summer as the metal gets hot really quickly.

Final Project

The project was designed to be linear, people had to walk from one end to the other in a set pathway in order to experience the narrative . I chose East to West as it has the highest traffic in concrete lawn as discovered in the site. I also made it slim and slen-der in order to fit the project within the walkable part of concrete lawn, modifying it and thus ex-ploring the concept of grafting. The design was also heavily inspired by the superimposition collage, taking the literal shapes and the hierachy of those elements and extruding it in a literal sense.

My debate example was the cold war and I wanted to explore the divide between the two ideas, thus the big structure in the middle like the superim-position, which will then transition into the maze which was the chaotic cluster. The maze was to also represent the chaos when these two ideas meet and collide. The maze is also made up of the same type of plywood, repeated but with different densities, heights and angles to form a space of uncertainty. This is also a play with shade and transparency from the repeated elements.

Final Project- Sections

Metal is usually seen as an expensive material, a symbol of wealth. That is why I chose chrome aluminium on the top, out of arms reach. representing the near-impposibility for the everyday person to reach it and rust at the bottom (represented as sand paper in the model) to represent the ugliness and roughness of the poor bottom. The middle is a see through area where people from each sides can communicate and exchange ideas. How-ever, each side can only see a little of each other representing propaganda and the little knowledge of each other.

The maze is supposed to be dark, to relive the experience of war, where there is no hope and no sight to see. The gap between the walls vary, but are usually small to make the person feel claustrophobic and make it uncomfortable to go through.

Final Project- Sequence

“As I arrive to the new concrete lawn, I saw two entrances. The left one greeted me with an open sky. Rust surrounded me, which I did not feel comfortable, there was also a thin layer of metal on the top that my hand could not reach. The other side was more spacious but similiar, but was roofed with a dome. It felt si-miliarly uncomfortable but the shiny bit on this side was on the top of the dome. As I proceed to the next area, both sides had the feeling continued, as I glazed my hand across the rough rusted surface. The middle was a high dividing wall, where I could see through to the other side. It was near eye level and I could only see a little of the other sides. Soon I entered a maze. The pillars were tall and tight, it made me quite small and scared. Little light came through and i was uncertain where the exit was. As I turn and turn, I seem to come back where i started. It was starting to get scary, until I saw the small exit. Thus the end of my experience.”
