It will show that the academic advisor is able to: use basic communication, advising and problem-solving skills to support students with respect to study skills, progress, personal goals and issues assist students in making suitable study and career choices provide relevant information for students (by media, giving presentations) about institutional policies, procedures, services etc. monitor student progress and signal problems relating to the educational program or organization and advise the board position academic advising within and as part of the educational organization and to plan and evaluate his/her own activities reflect on his/her own performance and achievements and finding ways for continuous improvement and development Designing and implementing a qualification program for academic advisors leading to a (inter)nationally recognized certificate Qualification Program for Academic Advisors Facilitated by: personal coaching competence 1 course + other courses when needed, on request peer-group sessions (learning) materials, literature personal digital portfolio site BB-information site / group site Involved are: initiators / project managers (2) coaches (2) coordinator & assistant (HR) assessors (3; one from LVSA) trainer competence 1 course * all doing this as a small part of there normal job Try out & implementation: Starting point: institutional vision and policy for study advising / student support Initiators: University of Twente + National Association for Academic Advisors (Dutch: LVSA) Pilot has started Feb. 2013 at the University of Twente with 13 participants Next step: further development (important: assessment criteria and procedure), implemen- tation of a similar program in more universities, mutual recognition of a national certificate www.utwente.nl/BKS
