Following the springtime launch of AD100 designer Jan Showers’s 16-piece furniture collection for Kravet, the pair’s fabric collection is making its debut this Market. “We created fabrics that work well with all the furniture, which has a casually glamorous feel and includes subtly chic and versatile frames,” Showers explains. “The fabric presents a wonderful array of supple textures like leather, faux suede and silk, pretty patterns and versatile plains.

Jan Showers + Kravet

Since I love mixing textures in all of my projects, a great deal of thought was put into the textural fabrics and elegant silhouettes complementing one another.”

Armless sofas, occasional chairs, canopy beds and upholstery are among the 65 living room, dining room and bedroom pieces in L.A designer Mark D. Sikes’s collection for Henredon, each of which, he says, “embodies the California lifestyle.” The collection is composed of work inspired by his own designs and collected pieces, along with “things I always want for my clients, but just can’t find.” Will he play favorites? “That’s a very hard question, because I love all of the pieces in the collection,” Mark says, before naming the Queens Road Chinoiserie Armoire, the high-back Wilshire Slipper Chair and the French-style Presidio Arm Chair as his picks.

Mark D. Sikes + Henredon

Michael Berman + Robert Abbey The influences of this four-part collection are diverse—Etruscan pottery, bohemian and handcrafted silhouettes and pop art are among the themes—but each element

embraces Michael Berman’s philosophy: “I always

look at table, floor and decorative lighting as the jewelry and accessories in a room,” the designer shares, “In putting

together this collection, we looked at the vast

capabilities and variety of materials for which Robert Abbey is known.” Velvet-esque matte-glazed finishes, combed ceramics, wire-brushed wood and indoor-outdoor brass, nickel and steel are all at play.

THE MOST EXCITING SHOWROOM AT MARKET!

If Fall Market madness is the designer’s equivalent to the back-to-school season, then debut collaborations are the counterpart to the time-honored “What I Did on My Summer Vacation” essay. Busy-bee designers and their perfect-match manufacturers have been working long and hard to create innovative new pieces and High Point is the time to take their work to the head of the class. We promise that this show-and-tell will be a far more fun memory than the yawn-inducing account of your classmate’s family camping trip. Creativity and newness abound here, people. Class is now in session!

Pandora’s Manor, the luxury bed-and-breakfast and event space from the founders of Eastern Accents, holds a spot on the National Register of Historic Places and can be found in the heart of Market territory. It’s also the namesake and scene of a High Point love story that’s survived the ages. The 111-year-old house was named after Pandora Fraser, wife and muse of the successful furniture manufacturer Henry Fraser, who built the Colonial Revival–style home in the early 1900s. He included a special decorative accent that remains today: Just beyond the inviting wraparound porch, the front door swings open into a large hall with high ceilings, original hardwood floors and a commanding turned staircase; on the landing is an early-20th-century stained glass window that features an art nouveau–style vignette of a mother and child—it’s Pandora and daughter Isla Myrtle, memorialized

in local history and now in guests’ imaginations.

Replete with intimate seating areas, the accommodations—formerly known as the Wilson House B&B—have been reimagined over the last season with designers in mind, boasting inviting nooks that include a 20-person dining room, a music/parlor room, a lounge, a foyer and a kitchen with space for guests to sit. The Manor will cater to industry guests during Market seasons and High Point University and business guests the rest of the year. Expansion and extensive garden renovations will continue through the end of 2016.Pandora’s Manor, 407 W. High Ave., 336.886.425, pandorasmanor.com

Making History, Right at HomeA new B&B nods to the past but boasts a modern,

design-centric reimagination.

Michelle Workman + Pyar & Co.

Windsor Smith + Arteriors Home

Pyar & Co. premiered its first-ever trim collection last Fall market. This season, designer Michelle Workman debuts her own first exclusive trim collection with the brand. The Queen’s Conquest is inspired by royal drama, taking its cue from the garments worn by Queens Isabella and Elizabeth as well as

from the seafaring trade of their times. The color palettes recall the peaches and pinks of the queen conch shell, the blues and teals of the abalone and the off-white, natural and blush hues of corsets and petticoats. The collection’s overscale trim is available in 4-inch and 6-inch widths.

From lacquer and lucite to gold plate and antique brass: The

next iteration of the Los Angeles–based designer’s

collection for Arteriors Home stands on its own, spanning furniture, lighting and decorative accessories that each

reflect, in ways big and small, the particular art

of mixing old and new for which Windsor Smith is known. Or, in the designer’s own words, “a modern-day harmony that rings familiar and unexpected, on-trend yet ancient and daring while undeniably serene.”

designer sketchbook Kapito Muller and Tammy Connor designed dream rooms using new products debuting at Market.

Tammy Connor, Founder & Creative

Director of Tammy Connor Interior Design“An oceanside cabana on the island of Saint Bart’s is the inspiration for our room

design. This space incorporates the essence of St. Bart’s: West

Indies style, French culture, fine dining and shopping and, most

importantly, relaxation and rejuvenation. The Robert James bed was the starting point. The Liza Coffee Campaign dressers

add an element of nostalgic adventure and we love their crisp white lacquered finish

and classic brass accents. The DF chair from Duralee is in

complete harmony with our comfortable approach to the

space and the teak wood frame is a natural material choice for

a tropical island retreat. The simplified lines and brass-and-stone combination of the Ave Home coffee table brings an

element of relaxed refinement. Add in a black-and-white tile floor and some contemporary

art, and we’re ready to book our getaway!”

Alyssa Kapito and Vivian Muller, founders of Kapito Muller Interiors“We love some of the more rustic pieces coming out this fall and we couldn’t help start thinking about

all the chalet-chic rooms that one could design around them! The honey-colored woods and dark-bronze accents are the perfect jumping-off point for a wintery escape. We also love some of the woven accents; they are very durable and are a great texture for sportier rooms.”

How do you know if you’re a candidate for a licensing deal? For the most part, manufacturers want to partner with brands, interior designers and decorators who will bring in a customer or another point of view that their in-house design team doesn’t already offer.

My advice for designers: Don’t rule out smaller companies, which often look to work with emerging talent and have a lower barrier to entry. Also, make sure that your design can actually be manufactured. Within the lighting and accessories world, designers frequently create beautiful designs that include glass, metal and wood, but the manufacturers are located in three different countries, which aren’t going to ship to one place for the design to be assembled.

Walk us through the life cycle of a licensing deal. The time frame from receiving a contract to the launch in the marketplace usually spans 12-24 months, depending on the type of product you’re developing. Allow six months

for the marketing campaign to roll out and showrooms to take orders. Designers don’t get paid until after the product ships. Licensing is not for anyone who wants instant gratification. It’s a commitment, an investment in time and energy and it’s very much about building your brand.

What tips do you have for designers looking to match with a manufacturer?Go first to places you frequent. If you’re a Vanguard furniture person, don’t knock on Baker’s door. Count on your prospect checking to see that you have an account with them and that the account is in good standing.

share an example of a deal gone awry.A designer will design the most beautiful collection, only to have it never see the light of day because it has not been set clear in the contract, early in the process, as to who pays for sampling, marketing and advertising. Make sure it’s crystal clear where your job ends and where the manufacturer’s job begins.

What’s trending right now?Manufacturers are opting for smaller, tighter collections. Gone are the days of introducing 100 SKUs by a single designer. Manufacturers are trying to figure out how to do smaller, more focused collections to give customers a more digestible offering.

Any parting wisdom for designers dreaming of signing their own deals?Don’t underestimate the power of your custom design work.

Include a “Collections” tab on your website; underneath that tab, include a “Private Label” tab. When a manufacturer is gauging whether you have experience in designing a collection, this will reassure them. Side note: “Custom” does not equal a takeoff of a manufacturer’s made-to-measure product. Make sure that you are designing it yourself, not altering an arm side or adding a skirt. That does not make something custom!

Dynamic duos through the years:

A glance back at High Point’s creative collaborations

The history of this town is rife with examples of inspiring partnerships that count High Point as their launchpad and home base. We at The Editor at Large have our own personal faves. Join us on a brisk stroll down memory lane, as we blow the dust off some of the best historical collaborations and introduce you to their new-guard counterparts.

Round dining table from the Taliesin collection by Frank Lloyd Wright, appearing in House Beautiful

Batman and Robin. Sonny and Cher. Peanut butter and jelly.

Tequila and lime: There’s nothing like a perfectly matched pair and High Point and furniture are not an exception. The two have been pretty much inseparable since the beginning of the 20th century and their love affair blossomed post World War II, when a whopping 60 percent of all furniture made in this country was created within a stone’s throw of the then-newly baptized “Furniture Capital of the World.” But this storied town’s theme of partnerships doesn’t stop there—notable collaborations between designers and manufacturers take the term “dynamic duo” to a whole other level.

Frank Lloyd Wright and Patrick Aubriot for Henredon Certain historical collabs were eons ahead of their time. Legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright partnered with Heritage-Henredon in 1955 to develop the mass-market Taliesin Collection, with an early offering of 60-something pieces. But the work was too forward-thinking. “When the group was introduced, both the decorating world and the homeowner herself had trouble finding an application for the group that ‘fit,’” points out the brand. These days, the pieces remain modern and are now highly sought-after.

Fast-forward to Henredon’s current-day partners and discover Patrick Aubriot. The French architectural and interior designer’s Reference collections, released in 2014 and 2015, span occasional, bedroom, dining room and upholstery and they carry lighter-tone finishes and clean lines throughout, calling to mind Wright’s linear elegance while somehow remaining distinctly Aubriot’s own. “I’m of the opinion that today’s design can only be a legacy of the past centuries and the role of contemporary designers is to act as a relay,” explains Aubriot, “taking the essence of the past to bring it into modern life—and certainly not to try and create new forms. Henredon does understand that philosophy and it is one of the reasons which drove me to the collaboration.”

Mark and Alexa Hampton for Hickory ChairAs design—and consumers’ tastes—have transformed with the times, so has High Point Market. Designer Alexa Hampton’s sensibilities were refined through decades of Market visits alongside her iconic father

Mark Hampton. “As High Point has changed radically, it’s so much more of a designers’ community,” she says, pointing out that her early days attending Market were often akin to entering an old boys’ club. “Today’s Market is like a designer’s version of going to the farmers’ market.” The

Mark Hampton Collection for Hickory Chair, which launched at Spring Market in 1989, embraced a customer that the designer later described to the Chicago Tribune as one who “mixes styles and pieces from different ages and mixes reproductions with antiques, which I think is a wonderful

thing to do.” Like father, like daughter: Alexa Hampton has launched countless collections, including those for Hickory Chair, throughout the years, frequently embodying her dad’s customer-oriented philosophy.

Tony Duquette and Kara Mann for BakerOther great collections lend new life to designs of yesteryear: Consider Baker’s Tony Duquette series, created after the icon’s death, at the turn of the millennium. The collection, in partnership with Hutton Wilkinson, isn’t merely a case of the past repeating itself, though parts draw influence from pieces of the past. Take the collection’s Elsie Tabouret, which hails from Duquette mentor Elsie de Wolfe Mendel’s original design; and the Abalone Chandelier, which originally appeared in Duquette’s one-man exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in the early 1950s. Thoroughly new but no less dramatic is Kara Mann’s 54-piece collection for Baker’s Milling Road brand, which debuted last October and seems to channel both her predecessor’s high-drama spirit and the brand’s archival treasures. “The inspiration for this collection came from our research into Baker’s archive. We combined that heritage with my own background in design, art and fashion to create a furniture collection that is infused

with both modern edge and relaxed glamour,” Mann explains.

According to Gregory Heller, Baker vice president of product marketing and development, Mann’s premise is rooted in “taking cues from classic forms, but reimagined.” It’s a philosophy that each collaborator, past and present, has brought to bear.
