Our history In 1901, a female entrepreneur named Mathilda Hamilton decided to open a shop in Stockholm, Sweden. She called the shop Indiska Utställningen (Indiska Exhibi-tion). Mathilda had earlier worked as a missionary in India. Mathilda realized that her biggest interest was commercial entrepreneurship rather than religion, and she wanted to show part of the “new world” that she found in India.

Fifty years later, 1951, Åke Thambert buys the shop. With a great love for the orient he continues to develop the basic idea, “to spice up the Scandinavian’s everyday life with a touch of the orient” under the brand name Indiska Magasinet. Åke strongly believs in the business concept and together with his children he devolops the company. During the 60´s-90´s the company grows from one small shop to a nationwide chain store. In the mid 90´s the first shop outside Sweden opens in Denmark, followed by Finland and Norway.

Today, Åke´s family is still running INDISKA. With a business idea that still is unique on the market and that we never will renounce.

Trade philosophyINDISKA welcome today´s commitment to the environ-ment and to the situations of people living in third world countries. We also welcome a well-balanced debate on fair trade as one of several means of bringing improvements. From the very start, we have developed an inner culture that has become a guideline. Words that are part of this culture include humanism, presence and commit-ment - in other words responsible trading. INDISKA don’t have it´s own factories, but work directly with producers. Our philosophy is built on long-term business relations. We have worked with many of our suppliers for almost 30 years. We believe that free trade under responsibility forms the main long-term contribution to economic growth and reduced social injustices in the world. This view is based on INDISKA’s 100-year experience in trading with developing countries, mainly in India. Trading with under privileged regions could mean problems and mistakes. Our philosophy is based on continuous presence and active commitments. Our work with the code of conduct is one example. All our suppliers have sign the code, you can read more at www.indiska.com.

CustomerOur customer is our special guest, and it is of most importance that we can live up to her expectations.• We want her to feel happy and inspirered• We want her to think that INDISKA is a unique shop with a unique range of high quality products • We want to give her Value for money - that little extra; that comes from the meeting with staff, the shop interior - but most important from the products.

Social projects

– Friends of Peace Trust INDISKA has for many years given economic, per sonnel and creative support to several social projects in India, most of these run according to the motto ”help-to-self-help”. Today we concentrate our sup port to Peace Trust in southern India – a Children’s rights-, women- and environmental organisation.

Peace Trust is working for the rights of children, women and the environment. INDISKA paid for the vocational school as well as for a student home for girls. We encour-age our suppliers to support the school, which many of them also do.

INDISKA’s support to the women’s groups consists of continuously placing orders with Peace Trust, which creates job opportunities for the women. The work brings hope and pride and a chance to provide for oneself and one’s family. At INDISKA you can always find products that come from Peace Trust.
