The Design Without Borders Interni Press Office features interior design based on black and white three dimensionality, with artistic colorful patterns, geometries, furniture and elements from different design disciplines, some custom designed by Mac Stopa, others designed by Mac for serial production, and integrated into the design of the installation creating design without borders, an expression of Mac’s creative philosophy and the Open Borders theme of the Interni exhibition during Milan Design Week – FuoriSalone 2016.

In the Design Without Borders installation, as in his approach to his firm’s projects, Mac crosses different design disciplines, including architecture, interior design, industrial design, art, fashion and his love of graphics, applying ideas born in one discipline to other design disciplines, demonstrating that in the pursuit of new and innovative design solutions, there are no borders between them.

About the theme of the exhibition, Mac Stopa said: “Open Borders conveys a connectedness among the different design disciplines. Technology, culture and experience gained designing in one discipline promotes and enriches creative thinking in another. The thought process involved in the industrial design of small scale objects, for example, can be very valuable in creating architecture, while thinking about architecture and industrial design opens the mind to designing creative fashion.”

Mac elaborates on this idea in his installation Design Without Borders. In the installation, Mac uses organic geometry found in nature as his inspiration. With a passion for geometry and mathematics, he created organic black and white as well as colorful three-dimensional geometric patterns. These patterns became the inspiration for the design of other objects or elements, ranging from 3D wallcovering and wall tiles, to a new three-dimensional modular carpet, to a glass table with the same transparent 3D pattern as the carpet, to a 3D printed lamp, to soft seating and poufs with a geometric cube pattern, and finally, the design of a public building with Mac’s organic geometry on the facade, all of which are exhibited and explored in a video he prepared as part of the installation.

The Design Without Borders Interni Press Office integrates visitors in a world of three-dimensionality, colors and textures, while creating a functional, productive and inspiring work environment. Beautifully illuminated with lighting by Luceplan, the space is divided into two zones. The first zone features the reception area with a custom reception desk produced by Marro and colorful poufs for guest seating, both made from COMFY® Noodles by NMC and designed by Mac Stopa. In addition, there are Coral Arstyl® Wall Tiles on the counter’s front panels and Wing tiles, part of a collection by Mac Stopa for NMC, which are integrated with the wall covering of the same geometry throughout the Press Office. The second zone features a separate meeting area with soft seating, tables and poufs from the new Drum Collection by Mac Stopa for Cappellini, whose official launch during Milan Design Week also includes an exhibition of the Drum Collection in different versions and colors at “Cappellini Point,” Bastioni di Porta Nuova 9 in Milan. In the Press Office, the Drum Collection in Mac’s vibrant Cube pattern cannot (and should not) be missed.

Added to the mix is Mac’s stunning Transparency modular carpet for Milliken. The 3D pattern on the modular carpet is also applied on the lampshade of the 3D printed lamp, on the amazing Mira table by Mac Stopa for Casali, as well as on the facade of the Massive Design Arena featured in the video Mac prepared especially for the Open Borders exhibition and included as a special video presentation in the Press Office.

Mac also crosses over from one design discipline to another when he applies the geometries and patterns he created for industrial design products using one kind of material, for example, wood or polyurethane foam, to another type of material: namely printed fabrics, from which he creates apparel. In the installation, Mac’s Cube, Wing and Transparency graphics appear on T-shirts, tunics and jackets, leggings and flared pants, part of the new clothing line for men and women that Mac and his partner, Dana, are developing.

In the Press Office, there’s more to discover here than meets the eye. During Milan Design Week (11 – 17 April) and throughout the following week (18 – 23 April), you may visit the installation at Università Degli Studi di Milano, via Festa del Perdono 7. Architect Mac Stopa combines architecture, interior design, industrial design, art, fashion and his love of graphics into one design discipline. He is founder of Massive Design, an award-winning architectural design firm specializing in corporate interiors for Fortune and Global 500 companies, designing public spaces, architecture and industrial design. Massive Design’s clients include, among others, Google, Samsung, BMW, Unilever, Mars, Pernod Ricard, Bacardi-Martini, AstraZeneca, MasterCard, Credit Suisse, PwC, Viacom, Brown Brothers Harriman and EY.

Mac is known for his modern, innovative and unconventional interiors that reflect and enhance a company’s corporate image and for designing interiors that are functional, comfortable and productive work environments. His recent architectural work includes the Gazebo restaurant, a light metal structure in which the triangular mesh of the building’s roof and facade is fluently connected with large scale organic windows; and Art Walk, an open-air art gallery in the shape of a sixty meter organic modular wall. Gazebo and Art Walk are part of the Warsaw Spire office complex developed by Ghelamco, for whom Mac also designed the award-winning interiors of the Ghelamco Arena in Ghent, Belgium. For Warsaw Spire, Mac designed the tower’s lobby, common areas and interior elements, including the lobby’s modular ceiling; Star Maker large format quartz tiles for Laminam; the Drum Collection of modular soft seating and tables for Cappellini; prefabricated organic wall cladding system; and Breaking Form modular carpet with geometric organic vibe for Mohawk Group.

Mac has also designed products for Bolon, DuPont™, Casali, Casamania, Italcementi, Mikomax, Milliken, Mosaico Digitale, NMC, Nowy Styl, Profim, Samsung Chemical Europe and Tonon, among others. Since 2013, Mac’s designs have received over 40 international design awards, including multiple Red Dot Design Awards (among them, a Red Dot: Best of the Best 2016), GOOD DESIGN™ Awards, Interior Design Best of Year Awards, Interior Design HIP Awards, a Best of NeoCon Gold Award and an ICONIC AWARD: Interior Innovation, to name a few.

His designs emanate from his fascination with mathematics and geometry. His passion for parametrically driven design, organic geometry, modularity, sculptural shapes and digital art drive him to create modular objects for serial production that introduce innovation to the market and allow the user to interact with and adapt the objects to the required functionality or character of a space. Mac’s industrial designs, including furniture, lighting, flooring, fixtures, wall coverings, textiles and other products and finishes, are a hybrid of ideas, technologies and cultures, sometimes mixed in experimental ways. From furniture to apparel, to electric guitars, to building elevations, he often uses energizing bright, bold colors and 3D graphics to design progressive objects that evoke positive emotions.

Mac also designed the Hybrid Collection table installation for DIFFA’s Dining by Design New York 2015 exhibition and several installations as part of Interni’s exhibitions during Milan Design Week, including FLOW (2012); Interni Hybrid Press Office and Parabola Collection (2013); Waves of Creativity Interni Press Office (2015); and Design Without Borders Interni Press Office (2016). In each installation, he incorporated his specially-designed furniture and finishes, 3D graphics, art and fashion. Mac is also an electric guitar player and music composer.

NMC is an international market leader in the development, production and marketing of synthetic foams.

Our product range covers innovative and top quality foam solutions for a range of sectors including interior and exterior decoration, insulation, industry, packaging and sports and leisure. The products we supply meet the highest demands in terms of technology, functionality, design and environmental compatibility. The company employs 1,200 staff at 21 locations worldwide producing and offering quality products that are supplemented with a complete service package.

In 1950, entrepreneur Gert Noël† founded the company Noël Marquet & Cie SA (NMC) in Hauset, Belgium.

At the beginning a distribution company for German household products, we developed into a manufacturing company based on the development of foam extrusion techniques. In the late 1970s we started our own production of polystyrene-based decorative profiles and flexible pipe insulation made of polyethylene.

In the 1990s, a wide range of packaging and sport and leisure products was introduced into the market. By constantly improving our extrusion know-how and cooperating closely with our customers, we developed numerous product solutions for the manufacturing and automotive industries.

In 1998, the management of the company was handed over and became independent of the family. Together with the founding Noël family, the new management has continued the success story. It extended the company’s involvement in Eastern and Southern Europe and set up new production sites in Brasil, Poland and Russia. In Scandinavia, the product range was supplemented by foam rolls and sheets following the takeover of local manufacturers.

Today, around 1,200 staff at 21 international locations work for NMC, all of them committed to writing the next exciting chapters in the history of foam. As a traditional family business with more than 60 years of experience, our intention is to continue exciting our customers, providing our staff with an inspiring environment to work in and rewarding our shareholders with the right returns. We do not believe in short-term success; but we do believe in having a local presence and being close to our customers, continuous development, innovation and long-term partnerships in line with our guidelines and slogan: We will succeed together.

Marro is a company with over 20 years of experience in the successful completion of projects in offices and shopping centers. What distinguishes us is an extensive offer of premium furniture, floorings, panels and lighting. We are ready to carry out special requests and manufacture virtually any custom item.

Our partners include companies such as Haworth, Vitra and Orangebox. Their extensive know-how, as well as our own experience, enables us to create friendly, modern offices where employees can work effectively and comfortably.

The list of our completed projects includes offices of some of the biggest companies, such as Google, ING Bank, Brown Brothers Harriman and PwC. We have also carried out dozens of projects in shopping centres across Poland.

Many of these projects, including Google and BBH, were completed for Mac Stopa’s architecture studio, Massive Design. Stopa’s amazing artistic vision and our beautiful products make for a perfect combination.

Casali is a company based in Italy (Cesenatico), which in thirty years has mastered the art of shaping glass to give it new function and forms thanks to colours and designs. A genuine passion for this material has always identified Maurizio Casali, the creative soul of all the company’s output.

A love born at a very early age, as he himself recalls:

“I’ve always been fascinated by this eternally crystalline substance. I remember when I was a child I used to draw on the steamed-up windows in winter, completely absorbed in creating transparency upon transparency. What I love and still find remarkable about glass is that you can first pause at the image, and then penetrate its infinite transparency”.

So no longer just a way of separating and functionally passing between spaces, but an element of design that interprets the lifestyle and needs of whoever lives the glass at 360°.

A meeting point between creativity and technology, glass illuminates with light and colour, expands the space, embellishes with decoration and creates an atmosphere and a design unique.

The result of this continuous dialogue is a Casali stylistic definition recognizable over time.

The entire development process of our products, from design to their realization, is characterized by the aid of the latest technologies to obtain quality and by a constant search of aesthetics also through the intensives collaborations with famous architects and designers.

In 2006, Casali starts an intensive collaboration with Daniele Merini, architect and designer from Studio Mark Associati in Milan, with whom he designed furniture and structures, using glass as a true protagonist in interior design. Another extremely prolific collaboration was born in 2014 with the eclectic designer Mac Stopa: renowned for his innovative interiors, he is the founder of Massive Design, the multi-award-winning studio specialized in interior design. The synergy between Casali high quality and Mac Stopa’s creativity gives rise to a new product line, the Hybrid Collection, which includes doors, solutions and furniture items distinguished by an innovative design based on the digitization of organic shapes, whose three-dimensional qualities go beyond the limits of glass, and bring new forms to life.

Casali’s Hybrid Collection receives four major awards in the Interior Design’s Best of Year Awards 2014, an international competition held in New York which for the last decade has recognized the best products.

In 2015, Casali and Mac Stopa’s Hybrid Collection win the Materials and Surfaces Category of the Red Dot Award, one of the biggest and most important international design competitions, held in Essen in Germany and now in its 60th edition.

The collection also receives four Honorable Mentions at the Interior Design’s Best of Year Awards 2015, with Mira Table and Clover, the new pattern for Mac Stopa’s Hybrid Collection.
