CINEMA Listings shown for Vue Cinema, Scunthorpe, Friday, June 21 -Thursday, Jun 27 1 2 8 Why vintage rocker Rod s sailing back on to stage R ECOGNISED as one of the best selling artists of all time, Rod Stewart has sold more than 100 million records worldwide. He came to prominence in the late 1960s and early 1970s with The Jeff Beck Group and then The Faces, before branching out on his own in 1969. Last month he released Time, his first album of original material for nearly two d e cade s. Rod says he has even surprised himself with his songwriting for the album. He said: The floodgates just opened up, you know? I dont know why, I dont know what the inspiration was, I thought the song writing had left me forever. It all came around one Sunday afternoon two years ago, when my dear friend Jim Cregan brought his guitar for Sunday lunch. He started strumming and I started singing something and Jim said Get back in it, it sounded pretty good. So I wrote some lyrics to it and that song was Brighton Be a ch. Ive written 11 songs  its an absolute miracle because I only used to write two, three, four at the most in the old days. So yeah, its a big stat e m e nt. I cannot wait to get back on the road again, especially in the UK, where the fans always make it a very special occasion for me. The tour is going to be f antastic.Reflecting on the old days, Rod said he did not believe in his own songs, so much so that he was sometimes embarrassed to go into the studio. He said: Even when I was in the Jeff Beck group and Ronnie and I started writing songs, it was always a struggle. So they would sayok, theres a bottle of wineand they would lock me in the hotel room until I got it done. I had no confidence in my song writing and a pretty well-known executive at a well-known record company really put the nail in the coffin in my song writing about 10 or 11 years ago. Its amazing that someone with as much success as Ive had can just take a complete bash over the head and gough I cant write songs anymore because that executive said I couldnt. Its not that I couldnt, he just thought what I was doing wasnt very good. So I gave up, but now it comes with age and Ive got so much more confidence in what I do. I love it. I please myself and be as honest as I possibly can. The key ingredient is to be honest and sometimes its very difficult.Rod has written about his own experiences   including divorce. On his tour, Live the Life, he will be performing a mix of old tracks and new. Speaking about one of the album tracks, Beautiful Morning, Rod said: My children absolutely adore this one and my two youngest kids sing it on the way to school. Its a story of escapism, getting away somewhere quiet, where you can forget about work and the troubles of the week and make love, get drunk and all fall down, which are some of the lyrics. And when it comes to the rest of the album, Rod said: T heres an actual throwback to Gasoline Alley because the re s lots of mandolins and violins and acoustic guitars. Otherwise, I think everything else is something of a step forward. Its happy music, thats for sure. I mean, it really is an up album, it makes you smile. As does my book, it makes you smile. The book certainly helped because I had to recall things that happened 20, 30, 40 years ago. It influenced the music. Sexual Religion is my little throwback to the 80s and its also about how men can be very weak when sex is involved. On this new album I think I sound quite youthful. With some of the tracks I go is that me?I sound like Im about 24. This is an album that I am extremely proud of, there are some very personal songs on it.For tickets (£60-£70), call the box office on 0114 256 56 56 or visit motor pointarenashef field.co.uk  As far as music legends go, you won t get more established than Rod Stewart.
