Why vintage rocker Rod ssailing back on to stage
RECOGNISED as one of the bestselling artists of all time, RodStewart has sold more than 100million records worldwide. Hecame to prominence in the late
1960s and early 1970s with The Jeff BeckGroup and then The Faces, beforebranching out on his own in 1969.
Last month he released Time, his firstalbum of original material for nearly twod ecade s.
Rod says he has even surprised himself with his songwriting for the album.
He said: “The floodgates just opened up,you know?
“I don’t know why, I don’t know whatthe inspiration was, I thought the songwriting had left me forever.
“It all came around one Sundayafternoon two years ago, when mydear friend Jim Cregan brought hisguitar for Sunday lunch.
“He started strumming and Istarted singing something and
Jim said ‘Get back in it, itsounded pretty good’.
“So I wrote some lyrics to itand that song was BrightonBe ach.
“I’ve written 11 songs – it’san absolute miraclebecause I only used towrite two, three, four atthe most in the old days.So yeah, it’s a bigstat em ent.
“I cannot wait to getback on the roadagain, especially inthe UK, where thefans always make ita very specialoccasion for me.
“The tour isgoing to bef antastic.”
Reflecting onthe old days,Rod said he didnot believe inhis ownsongs, somuch so thathe was
sometimesembarrassed
to go intothe
stu d io.He
said: “Even when I was in the Jeff Beckgroup and Ronnie and I started writingsongs, it was always a struggle.“So they would say ‘ok, there’s a bottle of
wine’ and they would lock me in the hotelroom until I got it done.“I had no confidence in my song writing
and a pretty well-known executive at awell-known record company really put thenail in the coffin in my song writing about10 or 11 years ago.“It’s amazing that someone with as
much success as I’ve had can just take acomplete bash over the head and go‘ugh Ican’t write songs anymore because thatexecutive said I couldn’t’.“It’s not that I couldn’t, he just thought
what I was doing wasn’t very good.“So I gave up, but now it comes with age
and I’ve got so much more confidence inwhat I do.“I love it. I please myself and be as
honest as I possibly can.“The key ingredient is to be honest and
sometimes it’s very difficult.”Rod has written about his own
experiences – including divorce. On his tour, Live the Life, he will be
performing a mix of old tracks and new.Speaking about one of the album tracks,
Beautiful Morning, Rod said: “Mychildren absolutely adore this one and mytwo youngest kids sing it on the way toschool.“It’s a story of escapism, getting away
somewhere quiet, where you can forgetabout work and the troubles of the weekand make love, get drunk and all falldown, which are some of the lyrics.”
And when it comes to the rest of thealbum, Rod said: “T here’s an actualthrowback to Gasoline Alley becausethe re’s lots of mandolins and violins andacoustic guitars.“Otherwise, I think everything else is
something of a step forward.“It’s happy music, that’s for sure. I mean,
it really is an up album, it makes yousm ile.“As does my book, it makes you smile.
The book certainly helped because I hadto recall things that happened 20, 30, 40years ago. It influenced the music.“Sexual Religion is my little throwback
to the 80s and it’s also about how men canbe very weak when sex is involved.“On this new album I think I sound
quite youthful.“With some of the tracks I go ‘is that
me?’ I sound like I’m about 24.“This is an album that I am extremely
proud of, there are some very personalsongs on it.”
