The Site: Clatworthy Reservoir

Introduction and Aims
Clatworthy Reservoir in the Brendon Hills on the edge of the Exmoor National Park is in west Somerset, England. Utilising the River Tone is supplies the local area and beyond with drinking water. It was built in the late 1950s, through the construction of its dam.
The surrounding area is used for walking and fishing.
There is an Iron Age hill fort situated above Clatworthy Reservoir and there are a range of geological sites of specific scientific inter-est, through which there is a relationship with the Open University. The reservoir also provides habitats for a range of species, including but not exclusively the local and iconic red deer and also badgers, bats, flora and fauna,a diverse woodland and particu-larly unique fungi collection.
Currently the site has managed public ac-cess to walkers and anglers but no other activities take place on the water. Although there are running groups and disabled facili-ties on site.
Wessex Water’s Vision for Clatworthy
Wessex Water aims to improve the users access, and so enhance the visitor experi-ence on site. Enabling a more diverse range of visitors through play equipment and ac-cessible seating for those unable to go fur-ther around the site.

The current site layout has a long continuation of the tarmac drive towards a turning circle, the centre of which has a stone monument from another site. There is an un-marked parking area off of the tarmac road that does not relate to a particular part of the context, neither are key views utilised to provide any sense of place.The grassland has rare fungi which Wessex wish to protect and as such the extent of works in the green areas has been kept to a minimum and the future security of the fungi zones will be on going.
Conservation and Enhancement
The extent of wildlife habitats continues to be mapped by ecologists and can offer a set of opportunities for further user groups. Improved access to specific areas can allow for educational groups and bird watchers etc to visit the site and connect with its habitats from a managed area, whilst enabling habitats elsewhere to remain more protected from people.The work to the arrival zone allows users to enjoy the immediate context of the reservoir if they are unable to explore further.

Corten Steel
A highly durable material, which shows a continuous patina.Resistant to all weathers and vandalism it offers a beautiful natural colouring for wild outdoor locations.Often used for heritage sites in Scotland.Suitable for signage or cladding, it is prooosed for the entrnace gates and hieght restriction barrier.
Timber Cladding
Locally sourced timber, pressure treated on site by the supplier (Blackdown Buildings), provides a low energy and sustainable form of construction for the arhcitactural ele-ments. With a silvered finish that is durable and maintenance free, displaying the natural patina and weathering for context.
Black Recycled Plastic Lumber
Can be as resilient as external grade tim-ber, used for signage, decking or furniture. Its darkness is recessive and so can be dis-creet on site, the texture blends well with the other materials.It is already used on site for signage and benches in some locations.

Arrival Gates
The arrival zones are important as the first impressions. As such, whilst providing secu-rity and the ability to manage ingress and egress the materiality should reflect the ethos of the site and Wessex Water’s image.
Materiality: Corten steel
Alligator teeth to be used to manage vehicular entry to the site- this allow rangers to prevent admittance whilst still enabling visitors to leave ahead of closing the gates each night. Turning circle added to allow vehicles to easily leave if teeth are in place.Natural barriers to be placed at verges inside the site, to prevent parking on verg-es: wildflower planting and low level grass bunding will still retain the views on arrival across to the reservoir.

The existing parking arrangement offers an unclear use of the site, it lacks marked bays or contextual references.
The parking proposal situates vehicles to the rear of the site, therefore opening up the North areas to the views of the dam. The cars are contained to the road and car park, allowing the remainder of the space to become pedestrian (with access for mainte-nance vehicles, emergency services or temporary catering facilities for events). This allows the Hubs to become a safe space and the scheme utilises the existing hard standing areas to mitigate unnecessary encroachment on the green space.
Bike parking is provided to encourage cyclist to explore the area on foot.

Permeable paving grid to support grass or gravel
Inset grids infilled with stone gravel provide the permeable and natural surface for the parking area. This can be delineated to pro-vide marked bays and to locate the disabled spaces nearest the amenities on site.

Corten Steel to align with the proposed ma-terial pallet for the site and be suitably ro-bust.

Opportunities: Shelters + facilitiesShelter
Designed as a discreet object in the land-scape, it is intended to sit lightly and be un-obtrusive. The careful decision to continue the timber on all sides and the roof keeps the pallet pure and allows the object to weather with the site through the seasons and integrate into the context.
The varied sides allow exposure for the oc-cupants, to meet the brief for connecting with nature and the site through views and the elements, whilst providing some aspects of shelter. Views into and through are main-tained.

The site has inadequate and out of date fa-cilities and as such this upgraded provision offers better access for all and is non gen-dered.Utilising the same material pallet and form as the timber shelters allows the interven-tions to sit together on the site as a cluster, providing spaces between than can provide meeting points as they form the main arrival area.

Precedents: Timber ‘Hubs’
Classrooms, Picnic Areas, Wildlife Hides, Shelters, Dens, Play Spaces...
A simple timber hub form has been devel-oped to meet the needs of all activities on site, by providing a simple but considered timber shelter. Oriented for views and for a range of users including school groups, walkers, bird watchers etc. and accessible for wheelchair users.
Selecting a recognisable form for duplication across each site Wessex Water site allows a visual continuity between place and ex-perience, whilst delivering beauty and qual-ity. The simple form and singular material choice is to allow them to sit unobtrusively within their context.

Seating
Natural, durable, heavy benching is pro-posed to keep the benches where they are placed. Also to aid maintenance, longevity and to fit the wild nature of the sites. Se-lections have been made from the material palette to suit the arrival area and provide a quality for first impressions.

A high quality piece of furniture for the arrival point to provide a resting location to suit all users whilst enhancing the arrival experience through planting. Providing bike parking and a litter bin, the object is interactive and uses the sites material pallet to fit alongside the other interventions.

Natural Play
Robust, simple timber play areas, units to be supplied by Kompan from their Robinia range in timber.
A combination of low level play items positioned as a route/ trail to alllow families to enjoy the site and to diversify the visitors experience.

The use of timber fencing internally is lim-ited, with much of the necessary fencing to be removed to allow more access to the site areas.Any new fencing to be posts and rails with waney edged timber for a softer rural aes-thetic than a squared edged or planed tim-ber equivalent. Cleft timbers for short areas of fencing eg. road edges as required..
Natural Edges
To prevent vehicles parking on the soft verg-es, particularly to the West of the Entrance drive, natural features will be preventative and so protect verges.

The existing livestock proof fencing to be retained.
