D E S I G N Sometimes a designer will explore concepts and themes via a

design and/or mood board, because trying to explain a design

idea, mood, emotions and the like can be hard to

communicate. Some people do well in bullet points or verbal

explanation, but some need a visual. So it is common practice

for designers to use design/mood boards. These design/mood

boards are usually a collection of textures, images and text

related to a design theme as a reference point. Design/mood

boards can help others to see inside our heads what it is we,

the designer, are trying to convey.

Design and mood boards can be used in a variety of projects,

not just for branding. You can utilize this method to find the look

and feel for almost any concept and/or design. Other examples

are:

  Interior Design

  Wardrobe and Hair

Set Design (Film, Theater, Photo, etc.)

  Fashion

  To name a few…

Anything you can think of that has a flick of creative to it, it can

find its base concept via a board.

There are a variety of ways you can display a design/mood

board. You can create them in mixed media, pasting cut outs

from a magazine and so forth onto a foam board or an

illustration board; mixing in the colors and objects that help to

find the concept or message you are trying to convey.

Or you can create them digitally via programs found in the

Adobe Suite like Photoshop, Illustrator, or InDesign. You can

find images to paste into your digital board from the web or

from your own image stock, etc., and create color palettes

that you can add to the file image.

Over the last few years I’ve provided design/mood boards for a few clients to

help them in developing their brand along with utilizing this method for my

own projects as well. This one below is from one of my own projects.

By the way, I always name my mood boards. This one is titled “Wooly Northern Beach” b ra n d

Last year I helped a client with developing a theme for a brand, their

blog, and website. They gave me a few tidbits of information of what the

brand and blogs would be about. The next three slides show the three

different concepts I presented for them to choose from.

My latest client I created two boards to help them decide their direction in branding their traveling business. fo n t

It was this board they decided to move forward with in the mood, look, and feel for their traveling brand. In which they shared with me also helped in pin pointing a few more exact business model elements that weren’t clear yet.

And to be honest, I’ve discovered doing this step in the beginning of any branding and/or project during development (and not after you have already launched) helps to keep you on track and consistent, and to encourage a loyal following. I mean, who likes confusion, right?

When I was first breaking onto the scene, my style in presentation was slightly different. Over time I’ve developed my own “voice” in how my boards play out.

It’s all up to you and how you want to convey the ideas and images in your head that we cannot see.

To close out my design/mood board presentation I’ll share a board I put together for one of my film projects where I was in charge of wardrobe and costuming. The character was named “Red Dress” – literally. And so, the board played on that name along with a retro feel. Hence, the title Retro Red.

id e a You will see here the board I presented to the team, and then the actual dress on the actress - that I also designed and made.

I hope you found this presentation helpful and insightful. I also hope it helped in persuading any of those out there doubting the importance of brand or theme development, and its importance to be included as a vital “action-step” in any project and/or business development.

Thank you for viewing and ART ON!
