Hansje Van Halem - Sketch Cahier De Buitenkant Publishers 2015 ISBN 9789490913502 Acqn 24905 Pb 20x29cm 52pp 40ills 21col 29.95 Collected here are highlights from graphic designer Hansje van Halems sold-out previous publication, Sketchbook, together with new work. This volume contains 52 pages with a dizzying array of commissioned, applied, self-generated, rejected, and unfinished sketches, type drawings, motifs, and experiments (both successes and failures). According to Van Halem, experimenting with typography is something she began to do in between deadlines for book designs: a hobby that has translated into a number of assignments. The tension between a systematic approach, legibility, and (ir)regularity appeals to Van Halem, visible in her patterns and textures.

Golden Meaning - Fifty Five Graphic Experiments. 1:1.618 Lecturis 2015 ISBN 9780957238114 Acqn 24915 Pb 11x18cm 288pp 250col ills 19.95 Often referred to as the divine proportion, the golden mean has long served as a blueprint for aesthetic appeal. Golden Meaning puts this to the test, exploring the relationship between graphic design and mathematics. Intended to be as intriguing as it is illuminating, this title collects the responses of 55 (think Fibonacci) designers, typographers and image-makers to the same brief to communicate, explore or explain the golden mean. New works tackle this ancient mathematical quandary with intelligence, style and a generous pinch of wit. Each design is accompanied by a short rationale explaining the designers decision-making process.

Brian Roettinger Reproductions THE THING 2015 ISBN 9780984915057 Acqn 24638 Pb 17x23cm 412pp 416ills 32col 46.95 Los Angelesbased artist and two-time Grammy-nominated graphic designer Brian Roettinger is celebrated for the graphic design and art direction he has created for artists, architects and musicians such as No Age, Liars, Beach House and Jay-Z. In 2009, he was chosen as Rolling Stone's Album Designer of the Year. Roettinger's issue for The Thing Quarterly is a massive (412-page) catalogue raisonn that collects, documents and indexes the majority of his design work produced to date. The works, which are reproduced in black and white from photocopies, are not presented chronologically, nor is it clear, upon first inspection, which project is which: an early version is shown, sometimes just a sketch, and in some cases, the final printer proofs. Unlike a traditional monograph, Roettinger's reimagined interpretation is a testament to the process itself, and underscores the poles of his approach, which is both visibly chaotic and meticulously organized.

Frequently used colours are given a name, while others are left unnamed. This book explores the rich realm of colour in France through photographic and digital means. New models for analysing colour names and schemes are presented, with data extraction and distribution forming three-dimensional relationships. By comparing colour names in French and Japanese, information about how they are selected and used also emerges in a complex anthropological interaction through the experience of colour and the action of taking a photograph.
