MAKING OF ROBONGIERSDesign Journey
DESIGN CYCLE…. Everything we do in our daily life
revolves around the design cycle.• Wearing clothes • What to eat at a restaurant• Shopping • Preparing food• Creating or Making something
The four main attributes to design are
• Investigate• Plan• Create• Evaluate
DESIGN BRIEF Creating a trophy for the interschool robotics event
THE INVESTIGATION MIND MAPPING AND DOODLING
THE INITIAL DESIGNS OF THE TROPHIES Inspiration was a Gyro Scope Gyro scope is a device that balances the structure it is integral to Robotics
The form was interesting, but we felt something was missing … probably a strong connection with the topic or the event.
The missing link was the NAME of the EVENT and a most importantly an identity of its own – a LOGO
THE NAME HUNT Creativity is at its best in young minds ….acknowledging that
Middle School Students brainstormed on Possible names and this is what they came up with
Robofest Robocon Robocom Refresh RobotechTechshop Roboshop Robowars
Open mind Roborobo Experiment Robattles- (robot battle) Screwbot Rockbot Machima Robodex- (robot Dexter) Bloobots(blooming robots) Thinkbots
Technobot Robopps- (robo operations) Roboware TechbotDexbot- (Dexter robot) Robongiers Botnologic Robotica
Robotia Robotonica
THE HUNT GOT OVER WITH A NAME ROBONGIERS = ROBOT + ENGINEERS
The Name Hunt Was Over and the LOGO HUNT began….
DOODLING LOGOS…. How to start??? What to make??? The mind was flooded with thought and to flush them out the hand came to
rescue and then………..
And FOUR logos were selected from among the lot and were drawn with every possible details….
FINAL FOUR LOGOS….
This wasn’t the end…after a lot of debate
the FINAL LOGO that came into existence is…….
BLACK & WHITE VERSION OF THE LOGO…
COLOUR VERSION OF THE LOGO…
The forgotten story of the TROPHY will start now….
CREATION OF THE TROPHY… The journey started again but this time it was more
clear and well defined and so designing the trophy looked easy…
So I decided to go with a flow and to keep the elements of the logo in the trophy ( to make my job easier)…..
The best way to retain uniformity was to play with the form of a gear as its already there in the logo…
And keeping the logo in the trophy was the basic rule
to make it much more relevant to the overall theme…
And so the First Draft of The TROPHY was created….
THE FIRST DRAFT TROPHY… The First Draft of the Trophy was made to have a look and feel of the trophy And also to communicate with the others. so they can see what was Visualized
by the Designer. The Designer and the Senior management now evaluated the creation and made
changes to enhance the functional and aesthetic value of the same…
Evaluation and feed back • It is compact, looks appealing• The Logo inside is not Visible• The base of the trophy is not so pleasing as it is
breaking the visual continuality.• The nut bolt on the trophy looks unique but at the
same time are distracting • The transparent surface has an engraved logo but
the logo might get damaged so cant keep it exposed
AND SO THE SECOND DRAFT WAS MADE TO OVERCOME PRESENT FLAWS…
THE REVISED SECOND DRAFT INCORPORATING THE FEED BACK …
Evaluations o Its compact, looks appealing.o The engraved logo is protected as it has a
protecting layero The base looks more aesthetically pleasingo The bolts are not disturbing.
AND THE DESIGN GOT APPROVED AND IT WAS TIME TO FINALIZE THE OPTIMUM SIZE….
So one more MOCK-UP was created to check the size….
FINALIZING THE CORRECT SIZE…
Evaluations o It looks unique but still the height is not so
satisfactoryo The proposed bolts of this size will be
disturbing and so cant keep them this bigo The base on which the vertical gear is
installed needs to be elevated o The most important thing How will it
balance?o How to fix the vertical gear to the horizontal
one?
THEN TO CHECK THESE ISSUES ONE MORE MOCK TROPHY WAS CREATED …Made of Cardboard
FINALIZING THE CORRECT SIZE…
Evaluations o This one is a fast modeled trophy just to
evaluate the size.o The vertical gear is slightly tilted to make it
stable and strong. o The elevated base for the vertical gear is at
a perfect height.o The base of the vertical trophy is visible, so
either the base should grow high or the vertical gear should go down.
o Still incomplete as the event logo and school logo is not created to evaluate the whole thing.
First sample using MDF Board
FINALIZING THE CORRECT SIZE…
Evaluations o This model looks complete with both logos
on the trophy.o The frame outside is aesthetically pleasing o The logo inside doesn’t look compact o Even the school logo is not so visible and
wont be visible if seen from the fronto The visibility of the two logos is the main
concern.o How to distinguish between a runners up
trophy and a trophy for the first position
o What If the vertical gear and school logo is kept at 30 degrees for better visibility so the trophy can be looked at from all the sides and will give the same pleasing experience
Then FINAL TROPHIES were created with all the corrections in mind….
FINAL TROPHIES…Evaluations o Both the trophies are
identical yet different in size.
o the logos are very visible due to its proper positioning
o The bolts are not disturbing the view.
o The logo in the dial with school name and the winning positions are making it compact and visually appealing .
And finally the Quest Was over …..
But I wouldn’t have made it with out…….
THANKS A LOT …..
