Design Elements of a Web Page

Focal Point

• Each page should have a focal point to attract the viewer.

• This can be one large picture or a headline, a combination of both, or sometimes a logo.

• Strong Color or Placement: isolation, contrast, size, etc.

Web Page Considerations I

• People scan sites quickly and without fear of error.

• Sites should simplify the tasks users most likely wish to accomplish.

Web Page Considerations II

• Page should (usually) avoid too much clutter.

• Colors and text styles should be consistent from page to page

• Navigation links should be well chosen, be descriptive, and be consistent.

• Horizontal scrolling is discouraged. Vertical scrolling should be limited.

Web Page Considerations III

• Logos are frequently seen at the top or left-top of the page.

• Images and text should complement each other: not be “lined up”

• Background colors and images should not interfere with overall readability.

• Tables are used for layout purposes, but frequently kept transparent. (see cnn.com)
