The expression “A picture is like a thousand words” is very true with the lines used in drafting. If you use correct line type and weight you will save yourself a lot of time by not having to use words to explain your drawing. The following is the Alphabet of Lines.

Line quality is directly related to the density of the line. This is especially important when drawings are blueprinted. Sharp corners, smooth tangents, and sharp edges are extremely important.

To test the quality of your line density, hold the drawing up to a strong light source. If you can see light through the graphite your density needs to be improved. This will keep object lines solid and not have them confused with dashed or hidden lines on the job site or duringfabrication.
