Design Cycle Project(Last formal grade for 4th Quarter)

ProblemThe superintendent of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools has asked for an updated map of Piedmont Middle School for their safety records.

You will need to create an accurate map of the main floor of the school.

Example

RequirementsEach room needs to be included and color-coded:

-All classrooms with the teacher’s name (Yellow)-Lobby (Orange)-All bathrooms (Blue)-Auditorium (Brown)-Gym (Green)-Media Center (Purple)-Main Office (Red)-Hallways

You also need to make sure to identify the main entrance and emergency exits.

ProcessYou will follow the stages of the Design Cycle to:

-Research and gather information -Make a rough draft -Edit and correct your rough draft -Complete a professional-looking final draft to be

submitted to the superintendent.

All research and rough drafts should be submitted along with the final product.

Stage 1- Inquiring & Analyzing

• During this stage, you will research information needed for your rough draft. • Please record information you will need (locations of rooms and

hallways, names of teachers, location of emergency exits, etc.) • You may also sketch the locations of what is required to help you on

your rough draft.

• You must finish Stage 1 before you begin your rough draft (Stage 2). Also, you will be turning in your research notes and sketches when you submit your final product.

Stage 2- Developing Ideas• Using the information gathered from your research, design your rough draft. • Remember, this is not your final copy, but this is a guide/blueprint to help you

create your final map. • Once you have finished your rough draft, you may walk around and take a look

to see how accurate your rough draft is. • Please make sure to note any changes that need to be made when creating the

final product. • If there are major differences between the rough draft and final product

without explanation you will lose points.

• You must finish Stage 2 before you begin your final product (Stage 3). Also, you will be turning in your rough draft(s) when you submit your final product.

Stage 2- Developing Ideas• Remember, this part is a rough draft/blueprint. This is NOT the final product, but

intended to help guide you in completing the final product.

• You must finish Stage 2 before you begin your final product (Stage 3). Also, you will be turning in your rough draft(s) when you submit your final product.

Stage 3- Creating the Solution

• Using your rough draft and any changes you have decided to make, create your final product. • Your map should have all of the necessary requirements and should look

professional (check the rubric). • Remember, you are submitting this to the superintendent of Charlotte-

Mecklenburg Schools. Your final map should be neat with no rips or tears and no spelling errors. Once you have completed your final product, please submit.

• When you submit, please make sure you are including all research, rough drafts, and your final product. Do not start evaluation (Stage 4) until the project has been graded and you have received feedback from the evaluator.

Stage 4- Evaluate• Do not begin this stage until you have turned in your project and received your

grade and feedback from the teacher. Answer the following questions based upon your opinions and the feedback received.

On a separate sheet of paper, answer the following questions. The more detailed your response, the higher your grade.

-What are the strengths of this project? What did you feel like you did the best on?-If you had to do this project over again, what would you do differently or try to improve? -Do you think the superintendent would be pleased with your final product? Why or why not?-Could people who don’t know anything about Piedmont use your map to get around? Why or why not?

How will you be graded?
