ThefollowingisasupplementaldocumenttotheTownofDanville,SkateParkfeasibilityStudy.Todate,wehaveconductedathoroughreviewofuseareaswithinTown-ownedrecreationpropertiesfortheintegrationofaskateboardandotherwheeledvehiclepark.Aswiththeinitialprocess,itisalwaysourgoaltousedatacollectedduringthereviewofpotentialareasaswellasrelevantanecdotalinformationgatheredduringthecourseofconversationsandmeetingswithtownstaff,interestedparties,andthecommunityatlarge.
Thiscommunityinputandexperiencewasgatheredduringthecourseofseveralworkshopsandcommunitymeetings.WhentheinitialprocessselectedSycamoreValleyParkastheprimarylocation,andtwopotentiallocationswithinthatparkwereidentifiedandpresentedtothecommunity,alotofinputandconcernswasreceivedaboutthefeasibilityofsuchaninstallationinbothlocations.
ItappearsthatbyandlargethereisstrongsupportforaskatefacilitywithintheTownofDanville,withtheoutstandingchallengebeingidentifyingtheideallocation.Therefore,werecalibratedourprocess,andtookalookatanewpotentialsitewithinSycamoreValleyParktoseewhetheritmightprovideanoptimalparklocationwhileaddressingsomeofthechallengesbroughtupduringourmeetings.
Theprimaryconcernsincluded:
A. Impactonadjoiningareasand/oroutrightdisplacementofexistinguseareaswithintheparkB. Thesitebeingclosetoabusystreet–CaminoTassajaraC. Inadequatedropofforparkinglocationandtemptingunsafedrop-offsnearthebusyroadD. Concernsaboutrollertrafficcomingthroughthe“totlot”areaE. ConcernsaboutproximitytoneighboringhomesF. ConcernsaboutproximitytoanelementaryschoolG. Concernaboutthesiteoccupyingopenfieldspacewhereparkgoersnormallysit
Weknowasuccessfulprojectmeetstheneedsofasmanystakeholdersaspossible,whichincludesthosewhowillnotbeskateparkusersthemselves,butcouldbeimpactedbyanewpark.Allofthisledtoanexaminationofanotherun-programmedspotwithinSycamoreValleyPark.Thenewareaofconsideration,whilestillinthe

generalareaoftheinitialtwolocations,isshiftedfartherfromtheroad,uptheslopeandintegratedinawaysoitoccupieslessoftheopengreenfieldareawithinthepark.
Inordertolessenimpactandmaximizeseparationtotheroadandneighboringhomes,
thespaceincludedareasonbothsidesofanexistingEast/Westpedestrianpath.However,workingwiththetopographytominimizetheimpactontheoverallpathwayarchitecture,wechoseacourseconceptandlayoutthatleftthepathwayinplaceandintegratedaroundit.
Thepremisebehindthisdecisionwasthatmostskateparksarecomprisedofmultipleuseareasandoftentheseareasfunctionindependentlyandareevendisconnectedfromeachother.Thisisevenmoretruewhenworkingwithsitesthathavenotableelevationchanges.
Forthisreason,ourstudyconceptisbisectedbythepathwaywiththebowl(amoreadvancedtransitionstyle)areaspositionedtotheNorth/Eastandthecompanionstreet/plazaareasandlocatedtowardtheSouth/West.Thesearetwodistinctspacesandcanbeimplementedastonotpromoteorallowforcross-course/cross-pathuse.
Anadditionalbenefittotheseparationofthespacesbythepathisthatitgivesustheopportunitytocompletelydisconnecttheuseplanesandmakeuseofgeneratedfillfromtheupperbowlareatocreateacrossslopeterraceforinstallationofthelowerstreet/plaza.
Webelievethatbyconfiguringtheentrance/seatingandspectatorareaswithintheseskatezones,wecanpushtheprimaryaccesstraffictowardthewestsideofthepropertyandlimitthelikelihoodofskatetrafficthroughthe“totlot”area.Therearealsoadditionalphysicalmeasuresthatcanbeemployedtofurtherminimizewheeledtravelthroughsensitiveareasofthepark.
Aspartoftheprocesstobettersituatethecoursewehavedecreasedfromtheaspirationaltargetsizeofapproximately20,000squarefeetby12.5%to17,500squarefeet.It’simportanttonotethatthesizeandshapeoftheendfacilitywouldchangeandcouldsuccessfullygrowordecreasebasedonfurtherplanningandcommunityinput.
Insummary,webelievethatafterfactoringinofallinformation,itleadstothisfinallocationandbyworkingintelligentlywiththesiteandthecommunityitself,ahighqualityskateparkcanbeachievedfortheYouthofDanville.
CostingConsiderations:
• Thelocationhasanotableelevationchangewithinitsfootprintandislandlockedbyotherparkcomponents,whichwillcontributetoadditionaldevelopmentcosts.

• Appropriategradingandsitedevelopmentwillcontributetoaslightlylargerareaofconstructiondisturbance.
• Accessislimitedandatemporaryconstructionaccessroadwouldneedtobeimplementedtogetequipmentandmaterialstothelocation.
o Thiswouldalsorequireremediationoncecomplete.• Landscapingandotheramenitieswillbeimportanttomatchtheoverallparkaesthetics.• Stormwatermanagementwillwillbeakeycostconsideration.
Weareprojectingthatthestyleparkidentifiesduringpublicinput,inthetownofDanville,inthislocationwillrunbetween$65to$80persquarefoot.
Ifwecalculatethatbasedoncurrentconceptsize(17,500sf.)andconfigurationtheprojectedconstructionrangewouldbebetween:$1,137,500and$1,400,000.
